12) LISA STANSFIELD - ALL AROUND THE WORLD (1,009 points)
Retro-Chart run: 8-4-2- 1-1-1-12-26 UK Peak: 1 US Peak: 3 The first of twelve songs to have broken the 1,000 points barrier this year. Lisa Stansfield launched her solo music career in 1989, firstly collaborating with dance music producers Coldcut on People Hold On, which reached number 7 in April. This was followed by This Is The Right Time (#8, August) and then this single which was a three week number one in November, taken from her Affection album. I Beg Your Pardon borrowed heavily from Lynn Anderson’s (I Never Promised You A) Rose Garden and spent three weeks at number two in March, helped by a big points score from Rubcale. 10) LIGHTNING SEEDS - PURE (1,099 points)Retro-Chart run: 38-28-9-6- 2-2-2-5-11-38 UK peak: 16 US peak: 31 So, into the Top Ten now with another song that spent three weeks at number two. The debut song from the Lightning Seeds, Pure had the misfortune to be stuck behind a record that couldn’t be budged at the top – for most weeks this year Pure would have topped the chart with the scores it was recording. 9) LONDON BOYS - REQUIEM (1,111 points)Retro-Chart run: 35-26-20-17-13-18-21-33-X(9 weeks)-19-10-6-6- 4-4-7-12-19-19-18-33 UK Peak: 4 US Peak - The debut hit from the London Boys spent two weeks at number four in April, however it was the big twenty week chart run (four of which were in 1988) that catapulted it up the countdown. So, even though London Nights was their chart-topper, Requiem just hung around for longer and accumulated more points. It’s also the highest placed song that didn’t get to number one on the weekly chart. The remaining eight songs are all chart-toppers in their own right. The success of the London Boys has been a big surprise for me. I’ve always loved them (and looking forward to opening and playing the 5CD London Boys Story tomorrow!) but didn’t really think many others would….Requiem picked up points from every chart except one. Glad they got the recognition they deserve on the Retro-Chart! 8) DONNA SUMMER - THIS TIME I KNOW IT'S FOR REAL (1,115 points)Retro-Chart run: 16- 1-1-2-3-3-4-16-21-36-37 UK Chart Peak: 3 US Chart Peak: 7 Another surprising number one (to me, anyway, although I suppose I did have a sneaking suspicion that this might have wider appeal that standard SAW fayre) It’s rare that we have a song that jumps to the top from outside the Top Ten, but Donna made that leap in style, all the way from number 16 to number 1. A great year for Donna, with This Time I Know It’s For Real topping the charts for two weeks in February, helped along by a big score from Smurfie, and Top Twenty follow-ups with I Don’t Wanna Get Hurt and Love’s About To Change My Heart. Unfortunately the law of diminishing returns seems to have been applied as her latest release, When Love Takes over You, missed the chart completely. Another Place and Time is one of my favourite albums of all time, I still listen to it quite a lot now, every track is excellent. 7) MADONNA - LIKE A PRAYER (1,259 points)Retro-Chart run: 26- 1-1-1-1-1-3-14-40 UK Chart Peak: 1 US Chart Peak: 1 She’s pretty much dominated the charts since bursting on to the scene in 1984, but last year was a rare hiatus for Madonna with no new music being released, paving the way for a succession of young female singers. March saw the return of Madonna and the lead single from her Like A Prayer album spent five weeks at the top, the longest running number one since Always On Mind at the end of 1987. With points picked up from twelve individual charts, it proved hard to dislodge from number one. But then I was surprised how quickly it seemed to fall away. With just three further weeks spent in the Top 40, it was never really in contention for biggest song of the year. It currently ranks as the third biggest song of Madonna’s career to date. 6) TEARS FOR FEARS - SOWING THE SEEDS OF LOVE (1,281 points)Retro-Chart run: 26-4- 1-1-1-2-4-6-12-16 UK Chart Peak: 5 US Chart Peak: 2 After a four year absence (of new material, at least) Tears For Fears proved that they’re still Retro-Chart favourites, with Sowing The Seeds of Love spending three weeks at the top in September, to become their third chart-topper after Mad World and Everybody Wants To Rule The World. Picking up points from every individual chart except one, Sowing the Seeds of Love was helped on its way up the countdown with a couple of big scores from Popchartfreak and Smokeyb Points Andy 64 Cool Christie 49 Darkstar 0 Earl Purple 138 Kingpin 7 Mark 59 Pop Chart Freak 247 Raliverpool 130 Rubcale 62 Shireblogger 75 Smokeyb 188 Smurfie 115 Thorney 85 Whitneyfan 62 TOTAL POINTS 1,281

5) MARTIKA - TOY SOLDIERS (1,302 points)Retro-Chart run: 39-27-11-6-4-1-1-1-3-3-8-16-30 UK Chart Peak: 5 US Chart Peak: 1 Into the Top Five, and the debut hit for US singer Martika spent three weeks at number one in August and a long thirteen week chart run. Taken from her eponymous debut album, Martika followed up Toy Soldiers with the number five hit I Feel The Earth Move. Next single due for release shortly is More Than You Know. Another song that had pretty much universal appeal on the Retro-Chart, this was awarded big points from Whitneyfan. 4) BLACK BOX - RIDE ON TIME (1,314 points)Retro-Chart run: 12-6-1-1-2-3-5-10-17-18-20-31-25-20 UK Chart Peak: 1 US Chart Peak: - The biggest song of the year on the Official Chart, having spent six weeks at number one over the summer, it could only manage number four on our equivalent countdown and a two week stint at the top, with some big points scores awarded for Ride On Time from both Shireblogger and myself For me this song is synonymous with clubs, pubs and parties during a carefree summer holiday. In sixth form I was mixing with a new circle of friends and it no longer felt ‘cool’ to be listening to SAW (I don't think it ever was really, I was just blissfully unaware!) Although Black Box was still very much a mainstream hit, it felt like the musical landscape was getting a bit of an overhaul at the end of the decade. The original version of Ride on Time, which includes the illegal sample of Love Sensation by Loleatta Holloway, still sounds as fresh to me now as it did back in 1989, I never tire of hearing this, it's quite hard to track down now though. I don't like the re-worked version – although I love Heather Small, her version of this, which is pretty much all you can hear on streaming sites now, just doesn’t match up to the original for me. 3) SOUL II SOUL FEATURING CARON WHEELER - BACK TO LIFE (1,338 points)Retro-Chart run: 6-1-1-1-2-5-8-12-22-21-27-24-x(3 weeks)-38 UK Chart Peak: 1 US Chart Peak: 4 After the success of Keep On Movin’ earlier in the year Soul II Soul released Back To Life in June, which was again fronted by the gorgeous Caron Wheeler, giving them a third and final appearance on the year end countdown. It spent three weeks at the top, the peak of a fantastic year for them. I think I always preferred Keep On Movin’ to this. Back To Life is the song they’ll always be remembered for but it’s suffered a bit from being overplayed over the years. Back to Life picks up points from thirteen individual charts, with another huge score from Darkstar, so we’re pretty much unified in our appreciation of this record. 2) BELINDA CARLISLE - LEAVE A LIGHT ON (1,339 points)Retro-Chart run: 30-3-1-1-1-1-1-4-14-30 UK Peak: 4 US Peak: 11 The return of Belinda Carlisle and the first single from the Runaway Horses album, Leave a Light On, gave Belinda a fourth number one single in a little under two years. Despite Leave a Light On spending five weeks at the top in October and November Belinda’s first chart-topper, Heaven Is A Place on Earth, still remains her biggest song. Follow-up single, La Luna, hasn’t quite hit the dizzy heights achieved by Leave a Light On, but has moved into the Top Ten after four weeks on the chart. Topping the chart for a week in April, it took a long eleven weeks to reach number one and spent ten weeks in the Top Ten, allowing it to accumulate the highest points total from all records released in 1989. Picking up points from twelve charts, it scored pretty consistently across them all, with a big score from Rubcale.
