HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 31st DECEMBER 1989

New year, new decade and new number one. Featuring the combined talents of Bernard Sumner, Johnny Marr and Neil Tennant, it’s more a continuation of where we left off with a collaboration of artists from three of the Retro-Chart favourite acts of the 80s.



Madonna is unfortunate not to register a third week at the top with another high score for Dear Jessie, but instead has to make do with the runner-up position this week.

Completing the hat-trick of songs that have hit number one, Soul II Soul’s Get A Life is refusing to budge at number three.

Jason Donovan gets the biggest hit of his career as When You Come Back To Me finally climbs to number four after three weeks stuck at number seven.

Continuing the wave of Italo house music, following the huge success last year of Black Box, Starlight, Mixmaster and also FPI Project, who are climbing steadily on the current chart, the 49ers are this week’s biggest climber, up 16 places to number five with Touch Me.

Highest new entry is from Deacon Blue with the aptly titled Queen of the New Year, straight in at number 13.

So there you go, the whole of the 1980s Rod Stewart failed to get an NM #1 but now he gets there on the 2nd chart of 1990 (as this is for me). During the 1970s he reached the top position 3 times under his name and a further occasion as uncredited lead singer on Python Lee Jackson's "In A Broken Dream", and he was last number one in September 1976 with "The Killing Of Georgie".

This song is a cover of Tom Waits, who being the grumpy guy he is does not show public respect for this cover, but underneath is probably enjoying the publicity of his song as his name has been mentioned a number of times as its originiator, as well as royalties. Trevor Horn has produced it.

Quite a few cover versions around including the highest new entry which was written by Prince and recorded by the Family but this really is one of the most classic cover versions of all time and I'll be highly surprised if it doesn't fly to #1 on the combi-chart in the next couple of weeks.
