So 1981 is going to have a strong start regarding new entries, but not this week, which was a frozen chart in both the UK and USA so picks up the last 3 weeks of December's flops, those replacing at least 4 far superior songs with one cover of a classic from the early 60s replacing another. I think "Looking For Clues" may have still been stuck at #33 in the UK, whereas in this chart it's now been to #21 and down again.
The "sound of 1981" in the UK was Adam & The Ants. Ok, it was also Shakin' Stevens and medleys, but had it not been for the death of John Lennon and the re-issue of Imagine then "Antmusic" would have been a UK #1 in the UK too.
The massive week for new hits will be 17 January (i.e. 2 weeks from now) with 24 January producing another and 3 songs from those two weeks are expected to get to #1, leaving some other classics out in the cold. We're almost on the level of 10 February 1979 here and this in January! I have said before that 1981 had the strongest ever January (for new entries) and from my first playlist and all the retro years I have covered so far, I will stick with this, it was.
