4 April 1981 was the first time I did my sedra after my Barmitzvah and it was together with Hachodesh but was erev Rosh Chodesh. In the week that would follow we would do Birkat Hachamah, something that is said only every 28 years so in my lifetime just then and 8 April 2009 so far, the next will be in 2037 when I'll be 72. In 2009 the NM #1 at the time was "Other Too Endless" by Polly Scattergood, which also ended up as the #1 of the year and is among my top songs of all time by solo female vocalists, the number one of which is later in 1981.
So ok, John Lennon has the highest entry with "Watching The Wheels" and yes it's less intense now than it was at the start of January when "Woman" reached NM #7 competing with Vienna, Romeo & Juliet, In The Air Tonight, Rapture and The Best Of Times. For me however this is his best song from Double Fantasy and when I looked at raliverpool's retro chart he also made this one his biggest hit from that album yet in the UK it reached only #30, and I don't think it's because everyone had the album (which I listened to and it's a pretty good album if you cut out the Yoko Ono songs, Beautiful Boy obviously being the other very strong track on it apart from the singles). I think the saturation of John Lennon songs at the start of the year put people off. I have no idea what the distribution for this single was. They made a promo video for it featuring his times with Sean when he was a baby and it's very cute. The lyrics are clearly his explanation of his time out, and when Julian was just born the Beatles were just becoming massive and so he pretty much missed out on the fatherhood attention he might have given and decided he didn't want to make the same mistake again. He might have tried to reconnect with Julian during those 5 years too, and had perhaps just started to do so again, but obviously we never expected him to be shot and so Sean lost his dad at the age of 5.
Is Vic There is quite memorable, although it appears to have only peaked at #28 in the UK so another under-performer.
Musclebound the 3rd Spandau Ballet hit and this reached #10 in the UK, with a distinctive bass line played of course by Martin Kemp.
Climax Blues Band back in the chart, this reached #12 in the USA, their first hit since "Couldn't Get It Right" reached #3 over there and NM #5 in 1976.
As happened in 1979, Dire Straits get a UK top 10 hit followed by a smaller hit. On this chart now this is a follow-up to a #1 and in the UK did just scrape into the top 40. It's from the album "Making Movies" and contains those words in the lyrics. One to add to that topic.
