Stevie Wonder completes his rise to the top, whilst the highest new entry is "that" cover by Soft Cell, not that most of us at the time knew it was a cover, but Gloria Jones had recorded it in the 1960s. I also didn't know it had entered this early as it took a while to climb the chart and would be another 5 weeks before it reached UK #1.
"Hold On Tight" was from the forthcoming ELO album "Time" after the time-out for the Xanadu soundtrack, their first regular studio album since "Discovery" and it all started well enough with this reaching #4 and the album #1 but then their success quickly faded with the rather good "Twilight" failing to reach the top 30 and they would never have another top 10 hit.
After the success of "Swords Of A Thousand Men", Tenpole Tudor returned with "Wunderbar" which reached the top 20 - apparently a re-recording of an old song of theirs, and notable for that weird violin part in the instrumental break.
Going further down though, Kim Wilde's 3rd hit continued her decline in fortune with each single, and Hazel O'Connor who is still in the top 5 gets a new single which stalled at #41 in the UK and clearly won't match her big hits here either.
For two solo female singers who are better known as part of groups there is a slight difference in fortune. Stevie Nicks has a hit with Tom Petty which did rather well, but Debbie Harry's solo effort clearly "backfired" on her, although it did manage to just about reach the UK top 40. She would do 2 far better solo songs in 1986 and 1989.
Lawnchairs by Our Daughter's Wedding is one of those hidden gems. It narrowly missed the UK top 40 but is worth checking out.

No prizes for guessing, who was my next # 1. Based on some information possibly this single will die somewhere in the end here or even worse - DNC.
"Water On Glass" will hit top 5, but chanceless in # 1 battle against a legendary singer, who had five consecutive number ones in "Gražios Dainos" and didn't release anything after it. Mandy Smith repeated this record after the huge success of "Don't You Want Me Baby" in 1989 year.
Debbie's debut album was very average and I don't understand all your huge love to "Will You" by Hazel O'Connor.

Going by the typical entry at #22, it's likely Water On Glass will just miss the top 10.
Japanese Boy is likely to chart but won't be a massive hit. May scrape the top 20 or more likely peak between #21 and #30.
I quietly hinted at Mandy Smith on the previous chart when her future husband entered the chart as a soloist.

I'm on the next playlist now, containing my favourite song by a particular artist who had loads of hits, as well as a classic that was the first UK top 10 hit by a band who were starting to get big, the return of a male-female duo, and a soulful one-hit wonder (which peaked at #12 in the UK chart). Those really are the highlights of the next playlist.

This whole chart will now be regressed back to 11 July as for whatever reason I missed the US entries that week onto my playlist which consists of 5 songs. 2 of them will enter the UK chart later but I'm going to take it back.
Thus I will repost all the new ones where the old ones were but there won't be a significant difference.

The chart for 11 July above has been revised but I need to go through the others after it.
I'm busy scoring up the next list in time before the 3 weeks start, but will be posting during that period. I'm in a bit of a dilemma with Rick Springfield's version of "I've Done Everything For You" as it isn't that long since the original by Sammy Hagar reached NM #5, but Rick's version isn't bad, and if I don't chart it then what about Huey Lewis & The News' version of "Heart And Soul" as I charted that at the time but Exile will chart with that first. Actually the absence of another Chinn/Chapman composition this summer is more of a surprise to me, I thought it was a minor hit, but it will be along in February 1982 of course.

I have completed the adjustments. Although it is the 3 weeks and I'm not listening to playlists, there will be 6 more charts from the ones I have already scored up.

-- ( -- ) Step By Step - Eddie Rabbit -- ( -- ) Everlasting Love - Rex Smith & Rachel Sweet -- ( -- ) I Love Music - Enigma
Later on, "One In Ten" would be covered by 808 State, or reworked by UB40 with them or whatever. In any case, this is the chart of 8 August, which is 8-08 both for us and the Americans, and One In Ten is the highest entry this week.
Just below that, improving on the UK #12 for "Sound Of The Crowd", "Love Action (I Believe In Love)" took the Human League to an even higher level peaking at #3 with a strange run where it climbed into the top 5 at #3, then fell to #6 and then climbed back to #3 before falling out of the top 5 again. It was also memorable for the 'miaow' intro.
Unlike the Human League and UB40 who had loads of hits, "You'll Never Know" was the only ever UK hit for Hi-Gloss.
"Japanese Boy" does enter but much further down.
Of course, Tainted Love is a cover but is a classic cover. Two other covers though, Randy Crawford's "Rainy Night In Georgia" gets an entry but not a very high one. Brook Benton reached NM #10 with this song in 1970. For Brook Benton that was a one-off comeback after a long string of hits in the early 60s. "Everlasting Love" was a UK #1 for the Love Affair at the start of 1968 but for me it was Robert Knight's original that was (and remains) the only charting version, #4 in 1967.

-- ( -- ) Prince Of Darkness - Bow Wow Wow -- ( -- ) Chemistry - Nolans -- ( -- ) Beach Boys Medley - Beach Boys
Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" entered at #8 then climbed to #2 last week but Stevie Wonder refuses to budge, whilst ELO and Duran Duran swap places at #3 and #4 below and last weeks' big entries climb into the top 6.
We now have Dollar produced by Trevor Horn who is also writing these songs and I once said if they'd been having these hits around 2014 they'd probably have got them to #1 as male-female duos were so big in my chart then. Later on they merged with Bucks Fizz as a live act and the latter also get an entry this week. Between those we have a Moody Blues song, the one that has "Face the music" in the lyrics. At the time I associated that term with a classical-based music quiz shown on BBC1.

A relatively quiet week for new entries sees Genesis get the highest new entry, a relief to many who may have feared they had split with Phil Collins having a solo album and several hit singles, but no, they just do separate projects too. What exactly is the meaning of "Abacab" though - well it's a construction of a song where 'A' is one musical part, 'B' another and 'C' a third part, but not sure this song itself has that structure, and the word "abacab" is sung in the lyrics. (Later on Phil Collins would release a solo song called Sussudio and we're not sure what that means either).
Two acts you'd have found in the charts in the 60s - Gary U.S. Bonds was called just U.S. Bonds back then, and his song "New Orleans" was covered by Gillan earlier in the year, but his new music is a collaboration with Bruce Springsteen.
Also interesting to see Lulu reach the chart - she never seemed to actually give up recording but since the 60s hasn't had many hits, but she would of course have a mini-revival in the early 90s, and had her only top 10 album ever in 2002 with a covers album.
Meanwhile, whilst they are new acts, the Polecats and the Jets represent rockabilly revival, leaving Ultravox to join Genesis as the acts that enter this week with new-style music, and both employ the use of synthesisers, Tony Banks providing that side of things for Genesis.
Two of those that didn't chart are medleys, with Dance On being a Shadows medley, the Boystown Gang just medleying two songs together.

Stevie Wonder gets a 5th week at #1, surpassing "Sir Duke"'s total of 4 weeks in 1977.
The highest new entry is "Souvenir" by Orchestral Manouevres In the Dark, their joint highest peaking single in the UK. Teardrop Explodes also entered at #14 earlier in the year with "Reward" which eventually peaked at #5, but it wasn't so good for "Treason" which only reached #20. The third hit has already done better and could be as big a hit as the first.
I generally consider this to be a bit of a golden period for Cliff, and "Wired For Sound" is something of a classic. Let's forget for now what he's about to release next after this (it's likely it will fail to chart here..)
"Start Me Up" was the last ever top 10 hit in the UK for the Rolling Stones. "Undercover For The Night" did reach #11 in 1984. I was going to play "Start Me Up" in Haven Factor at some point.
Arthur's Theme and Ottawan's "Hands Up" complete the entries in the top 30 and it's a pretty good set of new entries.

So Stevie Wonder stays on top for a 6th week, and the question of next week is whether maybe OMD may replace it on top, or maybe Adam & The Ants will fly straight in at #1, or will Stevie Wonder manage a 7th week?
The next chart will be the last one I will post for a while.
Unlike last week, this does not feel like a massive week for new entries with Linx leading the bunch but there are 8 songs on the playlist ranked higher than it, 5 from last week and 3 from next week.

Much as I love 'Happy Birthday', I'm not sure it's as good as 'Tainted Love'.

I have one more to post from that playlist, I'll get to it soon, I've plenty of time before the next one is scored up.
I wasn't even aware at the time that "Tainted Love" was selling so well - I liked it but didn't totally love it like I did with "Happy Birthday", which is my favourite Stevie Wonder song of all time. I'm not sure when I found out it was a cover either.
The other "Happy Birthday" is on my next playlist as well as the cover of "It's My Party" which I knew at the time was a cover, and "Good Year For The Roses" which actually is also a cover of some obscure country song that nobody had heard before Elvis Costello made it a hit, in addition to "Shut Up" by Madness so 2 songs I used in Haven Factor at some point.

I wonder how high you'll chart my second favourite Stevie Wonder song (after 'Sir Duke') when you get to 1984!

I've never really liked it, but I recall when we did the retro chart of 1984 I had it as a #14 peak and that was one of the better peaks. I never intended using it in Haven Factor.

I've never got the hate for it, it's just a lovely simple love song. It's certainly better that that 'I just called to say I hate you' song that's based on it, and played a lot on the radio at the moment!

I look at the chart above and think "wow, so many great songs" and same with the next playlist. They can't all get to number 1. This list is far better than the 1990 one.
So ok, let's post the next chart
