Who would have thought at the start of the season that the first weekend in April would have seen Brighton play Brentford in a six-pointer for a European place and that Graham Potter would finish the weekend out of work?

Good Friday 2022: Burnley, heading for relegation from the PL, sack Dyche Good Friday 2023: Burnley, unbeaten since November, seal promotion back to the PL.
It's their fifth change of divisions in 10 years, which must put them pretty high up in the yoyo stakes. Not top, though - Norwich are on 7, and might still make it 8 if they make it into the play-offs.
Meanwhile in the National League, Wrexham and Notts County, who play each other on Easter Monday, are now level on 100 points each. Surely it will be the first match between two teams that are both on exactly 100 points?

Surely there's now a case in English football for adopting a similar rule to Italy, whereby teams don't take part in the playoffs if they're too far behind the highest-placed playoff team and if one team is over a certain margin ahead of everyone else, they're promoted automatically and the playoffs are cancelled. It would be an absolute travesty if anyone other than Notts County and Wrexham went up.
On a semi-related note, Notts County's Macaulay Langstaff scored his 41st league goal of the season today, a new National League record, with four games still to play. Before the start of the season, he was 25/1 to be top scorer.

I agreed with it when I first found out about it years ago, and I like to be consistent. I suppose there is a vague chance of it being adopted below a certain level but not at the top of the Championship - the paly-offs generate too much revenue.

I think they should make the National League into EFL League Three and have at least 3 up 3 down between that and League Two if not 4 up 4 down.
I think they should scrap penalties in playoff semi-finals with the team that finished higher in the league going through to the final if the other team didn't beat them outright.
That would mean we would have beaten Swindon in 2010 (as well as Doncaster in 2019 when we won on penalties anyway but finished way ahead of them on league points).

Playoff semi-finals should be one leg, with the team that finished higher playing at home (this is already the case in non-league football). I've never been a fan of playoff finals being at Wembley either, but again, in the professional game, the playoffs are just about making money.

I think we should be cautious of adopting anything from Italy, the country where allegedly they decide final weekend results before they play them. The playoffs were introduced to keep it interesting lower down the league, if you scrap them because two teams have lots of points, then you are taking interest and revenue from those lower placed teams? Notts County and Wrexham knew the rules at the start of the season, one team goes up automatically. Obviously when Mansfield were in that league, I wanted it to be two automatic spots and then the playoffs, ie 3 up and 3 down, now we are in league 2, I'm happy for it to stay the way it is. This season is unique, and boy what a game today between County and Wrexham, hopefully the 2nd placed side will succeed in the playoffs. Whichever team comes up, I think they will be a force in league 2 next season. I hear that Jesse Marsch was going to be the new Leicester boss, but the talks faltered, same thing happened at Bournemouth as well. Wonder what the stumbling block is for him to get another job in the Prem?

You say that this season is unique, but it seems that teams coming up from the National League always do well in League Two, which I take to be a sign that there's plenty of teams in the NL that would compete a level higher, and thus 3 up/3 down would be good for the competition.

I meant this season is unique in the sense of two teams with 100+ points which suggests the rest the national league isn't very good. I dont believe teams coming up always do well, take Harrogate Town, 3 seasons in 17th, 19th and currently looking at relegation, Crawley also now looking at relegation. A few NL teams have plastic pitches, so you could incorporate the league into the 5th league as FL currently doesn't allow them apart from in the FA Cup I'm not sure how many years were between the old re-election to one team being promoted relegated to now with 2 up 2 down, so it may take a while longer to get 3 up, 3 down. Premier league should be 4 up, 4 down, but they voted to change that to 3 at some point I assume?

Wrexham are pretty much "buying" the league. They have silly budgets above other teams at that level with rich American owners.

Automatic promotion and relegation was introduced for 1986-87, two-up-two-down was introduced in 2002-03. The Premier League has always been 3 up, 3 down apart from the 1994/95 season when it was reduced from 22 clubs to 20.

Rochdale fall out of the football league and Hartlepool look set to join them (again), and Wrexham and their rich owners have brought the league title. You can have as much money as you want, the highest budgets do not always bring success. Salford, Bradford (and sometimes Mansfield) have thrown money at league 2, and none of us are out of it yet! Let's see who will come up out of the Conference through the playoffs, one of Notts County, Chesterfield, Woking, Barnet, Bromley & Boreham Wood. 3 ex league and 3 new boys. King's Lynn or Fylde to come up from Conference North, and in those playoffs could be Chester and Scarborough! Conference South Ebbsfleet are back, but can they stick this time. South Shields are up to Conference North as well. Further down Macclesfield are Champions and Worksop Town! (next town to where I grew up!)

South Shields announced immediately after their last game today that manager Kevin Phillips has left the club. Lots of speculation among Shields fans that the new manager will be Julio Arca, who spent the last few years of his playing career with them.

Marske win again today to end their first season at Step 3 in 16th place. A big summer coming up in terms of decisions to be made but something to build on if they get things right.

Further down Macclesfield are Champions and Worksop Town! (next town to where I grew up!) Worksop looked a decent team when we played them last season but they've been phenomenal this season, storming to the East Division title when Stockton were the favourites. Not only that, but they've broken the record for the longest unbeaten run in the Northern Premier League. They lost to Stockton on the opening day and haven't lost in the league since - 37 games and counting! Macclesfield winning the West Division isn't a surprise at all. They will probably be favourites for promotion again next season but it will be a fun day out for us visiting Moss Rose.

My mate who is non league scout so chats to agents of the managers reckons Alun Armstrong is getting the chop and will be the next Shields manager

Of course Arsenal will be very disappointed to only draw with Southampton but that point did make Friday "St Totteringham's Day", the first such day since 2016.
Arsenal now have 75 points whereas even if Spurs win all 7 of their remaining games they will only reach 74.
