#45. Tongue 'N' Cheek - Nobody
One I remember! It climbed into the top 40, but didn't get any higher than #37 which is a crying shame because it's a really good dance track. Tongue 'N' Cheek were one of those acts who released a few great singles, without any of them really getting the success they deserved.

#42. Jon Bon Jovi - Blaze Of Glory
I don't remember this one entering so low, although it did get as high as #13 - which isn't as good as it should have done because I have always considered the 'Young Guns II' song to be among the best songs Bon Jovi ever did, and I always think of it as a Bon Jovi song even though it's a Jon Bon solo - it just sounds so much like them. What else can I say, if the song was eligible for Haven Factor (and I can imagine it was) I'm sure it would have done better than 'Someday I'll Be Saturday Night'.

That's all of the new entries outside the top 40. I might just do the new entries and climbers now, until we get to the top ten.

40(57) Hothouse Flowers - I Can See Clearly Now
Originally a top five hit in 1972 for Johnny Nash, this Folk rock version by the Hothouse Flowers, who are best known for their 1988 hit 'Don't Go', entered the top 40 this week and climbed as high as #23. It is very different to the reggae-tinged original, and a very appealing take on the song.

36(--) Craig McLachlan & Check 1-2 - Amanda
This was the follow-up to former Henry Ramsay of popular Australian soap opera Neighbours' #2 hit 'Mona', which was originally a Bo Diddley B-side from 1957. 'Amanda' was a self-penned song by Craig, and it climbed to #16 in the UK, and I have a bit of a fondness for the song really. I'm not even sure why, because I know it's no masterpiece but I like it all the same!

35(40) The Jungle Brothers - Doin' Our Own Dang
It climbed to #33 the following week, but this Hip-Hop track was never destined to reach the higher regions of the chart. It's ok, not something I would normally choose to listen to, but it flows along at a nice steady pace - and Monie Love's additional vocals enhance the track somewhat.

29(34) ZZ Top - Doubleback
It's a shame this never got any higher than this position, because it's actually one of my favourite ZZ Top songs. It was also featured in the Back To The Future III film, and plays over the end credits of the film. It's not unlike their hit 'Legs' really, but not in a bad way.

27(33) Bananarama - Only Your Love
This must have been a disappointment at the time, only reaching #27, but as we moved into the 90s it seemed like the successful girl group's days of having big hits were behind them. The bassline borrows quite heavily from the Rolling Stones classic song 'Sympathy For The Devil', which does enhance the song but the chorus just wasn't big enough to propel it high in the charts - in other words it was ok, but it was no 'I Want You Back' or 'Love In The First Degree'.

It’s not like there was a massive gap between the SAW and Youth eras of Bananarama, but it cooled really quickly. I like Only Your Love and the singles, but only listened to the parent album for the first time about 4 years ago. Ain’t No Cure is the best track on it.

#78. Was (Not Was) - How The Heart Behaves
I've never heard this one, I don't think. Was (Not Was) had a bit of chart success in the 80s and 90s, but they had more songs like this that got lost by the wayside. Their previous single had been a successful cover of the Temptations uber-classic 'Papa Was A Rollin' Stone', which reached #12, but this follow-up could only make it to #53. It's good though, I really like it! They are one of those bands who probably have a lot more good songs than you think.
This was a GREAT single. Was Not Was should have had far more hits than they achieved.

26(43) Phil Collins - That's Just The Way It Is
An Anti-war ballad, this was the fourth single to be taken from the exceptionally good '... But Seriously' album. Sadly it fell down the chart the following week, but Phil Collins had already had a lot of success with the album so it was probably to be expected that a lot of people would already own the track. I personally think 'Colours' and 'Heat On The Street' from the album were up there with his best songs too.

25(50) Bombalurina - Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini
I know I should really hate this cover of the 1960 Brian Hyland hit, as I always found Timmy Mallett to be not much more than an irritant, but there is something quite appealing about this clubbed up version - although it does sound somewhat seedy now, but then so did a lot of 60s pop songs if you listen to the lyrics - 'Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen' and 'Young Girl' come to mind.

I didn't think any of Jon Bon Jovi's songs would have been eligible. I like "Blaze Of Glory" more than "Wanted Dead Or Alive" and if you believe wikipedia, they wanted to use WDOA for Young Guns but Bon Jovi didn't think the lyrics were suited so instead wrote a new song with lyrics specially for the film.

24(--) Together - Hardcore Uproar
I'm not even sure I remember this being around at the time, but it did spend 2 weeks at #12 so I must have heard it at some point. Manchester rave band Together's only hit, this is ok - pretty catchy really for a song made up mainly of bleeps and sound effects, but it does have a half decent tune in there too. It probably sounds better if you are off your face on something though!

23(--) Duran Duran - Violence Of Summer (Love's Taking Over)
One of only 2 singles taken from the band's 'Liberty' album, this only climbed as high as #20 but their popularity had been waning for a few years now. I think their sound had just become dated by this point (something which they rectified for their next album in 1993), and for a lead single this just wasn't good enough anyway to do any better. It's not bad, just not memorable.

22(32) Tricky Disco - Tricky Disco
Another rave/house/techo (whatever the correct term is!) track that managed to break the top 20 - getting as high as #14. I think I remember this one slightly more, but I probably had it on some compilation or something. It's pretty repetitive, I said it's pretty repetitive, but it's another that I could get into if the mood took me! Not bad at all really.

21(--) Little Angels - She's A Little Angel
Another one that peaked in its first week, but I actually am quite surprised by how many hit singles rock band Little Angels released between 1989 and 1994, before splitting up. They're not a band I've ever thought to revisit much, but this is a pretty good rock song - probably something I would sit somewhere between Def Leppard and Guns 'N' Roses in terms of sound.

20(29) Bell Biv Devoe - Poison
It took this New Jack Swing hit 11 weeks to reach it's peak of #19, the following week from this chart, and even though it was their only UK proper hit it is an absolute cracker of the genre. It's a bit Bobby Brown-ish, which maybe why I love it so much, but it really should have gone top ten at least.

17(--) New Kids On The Block - Tonight
Hehe this is by far my favourite New Kids On The Block song, even though the buying public weren't as quick to catch on as it took another four weeks to reach its peak of #3. Their reign was quite short-lived compared to a lot of boybands, as they broke into the Uk charts late in 1989 and were pretty much over a mere two years later. This one is catchy as hell though!

16(19) Dream Warriors - Wash Your Face In My Sink
Canadian Hip Hop duo the Dream Warriors had 2 top twenty hits in 1990 - this, which peaked at #16, and 'My Definition Of A Boombastic Jazz Style' which did better, getting to #13. Both are quite clever in incorporating Jazz with Hip Hop, and still very listenable to this day.
