16 Screaming Trees - Sweet Oblivion
Yes we had lots of shoe gaze but of course another scene was even bigger and that was grunge. Screaming Trees were really underrated at the time, Mark Lanegan has since been regarded as one of the best rock voices ever. They had been going since 1986 so actually way before grunge was even coined but they became part of the grunge scene with the release of their breakthrough album 'Sweet Oblivion' in 1992. But it was still not a big seller compared to other grunge records at the time and only reached #141 in the US in 1992. They were kind of my grunge secret as nobody had heard of them, which was a real shame as this album is near perfection. 'Nearly Lost You' is still in my top 10 grunge songs of all time. This finished #42 for the 90s so is maybe a little low on this list, that placing should really make it top 5. And it has been a slowish start but we are finally into 4.5/5

15 Stone Temple Pilots - Core
This album has climbed a lot partially due to me singing 'Plush' so much in 2019-2020, I had it nailed as well. I remember at the time that Stone Temple Pilots were not taking very seriously and treated as a cash in band but time has been good to them and they are almost as revered now as the big 4. The criticism was a bit harsh as 'Sex Type Thing' wasn't really like anyone else, it was almost like industrial grunge. This is actually a great album and if you have not really explored 90s grunge but further than Nirvana then these guys are worth checking out. This their debut album reached #3 in the US and #27 in the UK and was 8x platinum in the US. I am still shocked by these album numbers, where did all these rock fans go... 4.5/5

14 Inspiral Carpets - Revenge of the Goldfish
A big climb up the list here, it was my 4th favourite Inspiral album in 2019 and now we are up here. I did say it was a bit harsh then so repeated plays have really given it a boost. It does feature my favourite Inspirals song which is 'Dragging Me Down'. But everything about it, sounds so much better this time "Two Worlds Collide" is equally awesome. The record reached #12 in the UK. 4.5/5

13 Del Amitri - Change Everything
Another album that has benefitted from more plays as well. I was a huge Del Amitri fan but by the time this album came out , my tastes had moved on but listening to it now it is fantastic. It's not quite 'Waking Hours' level, the singles are great but the album tracks are a bit blander and less emotional than the previous record but there are still some fine songs I never really knew like this one 'As Soon As The Tide Comes In'. Their highest charting album, it reached #2 in the UK and #178 in the US. 4.5/5

12 Gin Blossoms - New Miserable ExperienceYes I played this to death and made everybody sick of 'Hey Jealousy' but it wasn't even my favourite song, this album was full of killer tracks, everyone an anthem. It is not surprising that they struggled to follow it up its success, they are still going btw. Riding on the fringes of grunge and Generation X alternative rock they were such an important band for me at the time. You can hear in this 'Found Out About You' the influence they have had on my future taste and even what I like now. The album reached #30 in the US and #53 in the UK. 4.5/5

So what album just misses the top 10 11 Cure - Wish
I have actually shocked myself how much it climbed, never one of my favourite albums but i have played so much Cure, I love this one now just as much as any other. It turns out I needed to get into the album tracks as they are all the real gems, it just took awhile to get there. It reached #1 in the UK and #2 in the US. 4.5/5

So we are up to top 10 and this will be the last retro chart as we are going full 2023 after this. 4 US 4 English 1 Scottish 1 Welsh We have 3 debut albums, 2 acts are making the top 10 for the first time and 5 acts return to the top 10. I own 7 of these albums, 4 on vinyl, 3 on CD one of which I bought recently although I had all the singles and two my flat mate had so I never bought, which just leaves one that is missing, so might need to buy it

10 Shamen - Boss Drum
Their fifth album and first since the death of bassist Will Sinnott, who plays no part on this record. 'Entact' was a much better album but this was a lot more fun than I remembered. Probably the most fun album on the list to be honest, it just brought me right back. The Shamen were so huge in our flat they brought us all together pop fan, indie fan, rock fan and dance fan. That's what this album does bring people together and party!! Yes Mr C has taken the place over but I must admit he doesn't annoy me as much now, he was just so over exposed at one point. The album reached #3 in 1992.

9 Curve - Doppelgänger
Curve were an awesome band and this was their longa waited debut record. The one negative I always had with Curve was their production on this was a bit too muddy, maybe why Butch Vig did a better job with Garbage than Flood did with Curve. Maybe Alan Moulder should have produced himself as now he is one of the best alternative producers since leaving Curve. Also the very best of Curve didn't make the debut record and remained on EPs. But we still have a great great record with so many goth pop anthems and for a time she was the most beautiful women in rock The album reached #11 in 1992.

8 The Sundays - Blind
Back to the shoegaze with the gorgeous 2nd album from The Sundays. Steering even more into Cocteau Twins territory with this record, not as straightforward as their debut going into darker places, it lacks that Marresque shine which made their debut so perfect. Still some incredible songs though especially the opener 'I Feel' and the super gorgeous 'Love' maybe my 3rd favourite song in their whole catalogue. It reached #15 in the UK and #103 in the US.

7 Alice in Chains - DirtThe second album from the grunge metal band. I will admit I was late to get into Alice In Chains, they were a bit too metal for me at the time but the power of MTV2 over the years made them one of my favourite rock bands ever. This album is just a total classic for me now. If you just want an hour of riffs, tunes and angst then this is the record for you. They just have such a great sound, epic band. Jerry Cantrell is probably in my top 10 rock vocalist ever. This album is so good 5 brilliant singles "Angry Chair", "Would?", Rooster","Down in a Hole" and my current favourite "Them Bones". This grunge classic reached #6 in the US and just #42 in the UK and has sold over 5 million worldwide, thought it would be higher to be honest.

No future surprises in the top 6 these truly were my favourite records in 1992. 6 Manic Street Preachers - Generation Terrorists
The debut album from the Welsh punk/indie rock band. I remember the first time I heard 'Motown Junk' which isn't on the record sadly and I was like what is that!! I was taping it of the radio, so I instantly had to rewind it and play it to everyone!! I bought the single the next day and I have been a lifelong fan of Manic Street Preachers ever since, I think I own more singles and albums by them than any other act. But anyway they were this punk band so different from the rest of my collection and the common musical bond between me and my ex. But then they did something incredible they released 'Motorcycle Emptiness', the hype was true maybe this band could take over the world and sell millions of records and as we know, although they never cracked the US, they did become one of the biggest UK rock bands of the last 30 years. 'Generation' is still such a special record to me, I know it is bit rough and ready in places but that rawness and talent was just exploding in these guys. We haven't had a band since Arctic Monkeys that had the same effect and our kids really need one, grime stars and rappers aren't enough, or maybe I can't deny that rock is over but in many ways it wasn't in great shape in 1991 either yet. *update maybe that person is Taylor Swift. The record reached #13 in the UK.

5 James - Seven
The fourth album from the Manchester indie rock band. One of my most played CDs ever basically as I just got a new Hi-fi with a CD player and this was one of my first CD albums. I tended to still buy vinyl and cassettes up to 1992. Also I was very much a James fan at this time owning around 4 James T-shirts hehe. The baggy sound has been dropped and they are now a more anthemic potential stadium band; almost Simple Minds-like at times on this album. I would say this is James at their most consistent. This album reached #2 in UK.

4 Ride - Going Blank Again
These next four are not just my favourite albums of 1992 but in my top 20 of the 90s and all time favourites. Ride go more pop with their 2nd album but still can pull of a shoe gaze epic as well. 'Twisterella' is probably their 2nd biggest song when they play live, it gets the crowd really going. And yes many of these album tracks are not as memorable as the ones on their debut but for me It's still a faultless album. It has been great seeing them performing tracks off this record on TOTP reruns especially 'Leave Them All Behind'. Ride are probably one of my all-time favourite bands and I love that their new music is great as well. The album reached #5 in 1992.
4.5/5 but really a 4.8/5

Top 3 time and these are all 5 star no contest 3 Lemonheads - It's A Shame About Ray
The fifth album from the Boston rockers and a total classic. One of my most played albums ever and I was such a huge fan of this band. This is by far their best album and it's perfect, it only could be improved by adding 'Mrs Robinson' which they did later. At the time I preferred this type of indie rock to grunge but the tide has slightly turned over the years It is the definition of short and sweet though. The album only reached #68 in the US and #33 in the UK. 5/5

2 Sugar - Copper Blue
The debut album from Bob Mould's new project.. Sugar were such a brilliant band, Husker Du slightly past me by but I knew a couple of their songs but then I heard 'Changes', it was like the sweet spot between Nirvana and R.E.M. I don't believe this record would have got anywhere without 'Nevermind' paving the way for it. I knew of course that Bob Mould was one of the pioneers of this sound so it was brilliant that he was finally getting it time in the sun. But the record had songs even better than that, especially the stealing back sound of 'A Good Idea', everybody at the time said it just sounds like 'Debaser', well I'm sorry Husker Du did this first. That was the appeal of this record, it made underground indie acceptable by the grunge fans and it was edgier than REM were these days, well until 'Monster'. It is a perfect album and a record that I always have to play all the way through 'Fortune Teller', 'Man On The Moon' all brilliant album tracks. It was NME's album of the year in 1992 and reached #10 in the UK 5/5

Well my number one album of 1992, is my number two album of the 90s R.E.M - Automatic For The People
I don't think this was much of a surprise, possibly their best album, their 8th album is my favourite album of 1992 which is quite a feat as it was a excellent year especially in the top 30. It has sold over 17 million copies worldwide. There is not a lot I need to say about this record, you all know it and know why it's so brilliant. It is just a complete record and although I will not put 'Everybody Hurts' on as a playlist or play it individually, I will always play it when I play the album. It's also a rare album that side two is even better than side one. It was a UK number one and a US number two. It's a band at the height of their powers both commercially and musically and it would always be a record that would be hard to follow. I do prefer the uptempo songs though. 5/5

It doesn't surprise me. When I met Carol, the only album we both had was Automatic For The People.

4.5/5I'm a huge Manics fan,I have 13 or 14 albums by them, including this one, what a great debut album so many great songs " Motorcycle Emptiness" is in my opinion one of the best songs of the 90's, and would be in my top 10 of all time. I'm sure more of their albums will pop up in your future years.
