Pool B: TONGA 45-24 ROMANIA Tonga end their tournament with a high-scoring win over Romania, who finish with 0 points. Pool C: FIJI 23-24 PORTUGAL Portugal pick up their first ever World Cup victory by winning a thriller against Fiji. Fiji's quarter-final spot was hanging by a thread as they trailed by 7 points for much of the 2nd half but they fought back to lead in the latter stages. A late Portuguese converted try meant they win the game by a point but Fiji still progress to the knockout stages due to their bonus point, meaning Australia are eliminated. Pool D: JAPAN 27-39 ARGENTINA Argentina outlast Japan to seal a quarter-final against Wales. Tables: POOL B 1. Ireland (Q) 4-19 (+144) 2. South Africa (Q) 4-15 (+117) ---------------------- 3. Scotland 4-10 (+75) 4. Tonga 4-5 (-81) 5. Romania 4-0 (-255) POOL C 1. Wales (Q) 4-19 (+84) 2. Fiji (Q) 4-11 (+5) ---------------------- 3. Australia 4-11 (-1) 4. Portugal 4-6 (-39) 5. Georgia 4-3 (-49) POOL D 1. England (Q) 4-18 (+111) 2. Argentina (Q) 4-14 (+58) -------------------- 3. Japan 4-9 (+2) 4. Samoa 4-7 (+17) 5. Chile 4-0 (-188)

Quarter-finals: WALES 17-29 ARGENTINA Argentina reach their 3rd World Cup semi-final after coming from behind to beat Wales. The Welsh opened up a 10-point lead but poor discipline gave Argentina a foothold in the game and having edged in front, Nicolas Sanchez's late intercepted try took the Pumas out of sight. This is the 4th time in the last 5 World Cups that a team eliminated in the group stage of the previous tournament has reached the semi-finals (Argentina in 2007, Wales in 2011, England in 2019). IRELAND 24-28 NEW ZEALAND The All Blacks win a classic to reach a record 9th semi-final. New Zealand led 13-0 early on but Ireland fought their way back into the game and, aided by a New Zealand yellow card, were only a point behind at half-time. Ireland were never able to get their noses in front and despite another All Blacks yellow card towards the end of the game, weren't able to penetrate the battling New Zealand defence for the try that would've sent them through. Ireland's record in World Cup quarter-finals is now played 8, lost 8 and the career of legend Johnny Sexton ends in the same emotional way as so many of his compatriots before him.

Quarter-finals: ENGLAND 30-24 FIJI England were given a scare by Fiji but eventually got over the line. England looked to be in control, opening up a 14-point lead early in the 2nd half but two converted tries brought Fiji level with 12 minutes to go. But Owen Farrell's boot came to England's rescue putting England back in front with a drop goal, followed by a penalty as England reached the semi-finals for the 6th time. FRANCE 28-29 SOUTH AFRICA Another thriller sees the world champions progress at the expense of the hosts. The game was back and forth with France leading for much of the contest but a converted try and a penalty in quick succession put South Africa 4 points in front. France reduced the arrears with a penalty but with the clock in the red, weren't able to carve out the opportunity to kick the points needed to win the game. South Africa set up a repeat of the final from the last World Cup against England and the Springboks will be very strong favourites. Amazingly, England are the last northern hemisphere team remaining as well as the only team still unbeaten at this World Cup.

Semi-finals: ARGENTINA 6-44 NEW ZEALAND The All Blacks run riot over the Pumas to become the first team to reach 5 Rugby World Cup finals. ENGLAND 15-16 SOUTH AFRICA It's the hope that kills you. In a game no-one (including myself) gave England a chance of winning, they played the conditions to perfection for 60 minutes, opening up a 9-point lead after Owen Farrell's magnificent long range drop goal. However, South Africa's scrum, freshened after they'd emptied their bench, began to take control and a try that came on the back of a penalty brought the Springboks to within 2, before a somewhat contentious penalty took them ahead for the first time with just a minute left on the clock. The final will be a repeat of the historic 1995 final. It will be South Africa's 4th final - they've won all 3 in which they've appeared.

Too right it was contentious, ref have them to win in the last 5 mins on his betting slip? But they out performed what everybody expected and must be congratulated for that.

Bronze Medal Match: ARGENTINA 23-26 ENGLAND A much closer contest than their pool stage encounter but England come out on top again, holding off the Pumas to take 3rd place.

The Final: NEW ZEALAND 11-12 SOUTH AFRICA South Africa hold off New Zealand in a nailbiter to win the World Cup for the 4th time. In a final where cards played a big part, the All Blacks played most of the game with 14 men, having had Shannon Frizell yellow carded early on before captain Sam Cane became the first man red carded in a World Cup final. Despite the Springboks dominating the 1st half, they only led 12-6 at the break. South Africa lost their captain Siya Kolisi for 10 minutes in the 2nd half and Beauden Barrett became the first player to score a try against South Africa in a World Cup final and the first player to score a try in 2 World Cup finals, however, Richie Mo'unga missed the conversion, keeping the Springboks ahead by 1. Cheslin Kolbe was shown a yellow card in the final 10 minutes, opening the door for the All Blacks again but Jordie Barrett missed the subsequent penalty and South Africa showed the resilience that has typified their tournament to see out the game. The Springboks won all 3 knockout games by a single point.

The Six Nations gets underway this weekend. Ireland and France look favourites again and meet in the opening game. England were once again the best-performing northern hemisphere side at the World Cup but are missing some key players. Scotland will look to continue their steady progress, Wales will look to halt their steady decline, while Italy's aim will surely be to record a win, having only tasted victory in the competition twice in the last decade.

Week 1 results: France 17-38 Ireland Italy 24-27 England Wales 26-27 Scotland
Ireland started with a dominant win over a French side that played most of the game with 14 men.
England came from behind to beat Italy but are unlikely to have Ireland quaking in their boots.
Wales almost produced an amazing comeback against Scotland having trailed 27-0 early in the second half. It's Scotland's first win in Wales since 2002.
Table: 1. Ireland 1-5 (+21) 2. England 1-4 (+3) 3. Scotland 1-4 (+1) 4. Wales 1-2 (-1) 5. Italy 1-1 (-3) 6. France 1-0 (-21)

Week 2 results: Scotland 16-20 France England 16-14 Wales Ireland 36-0 Italy
Ireland continue their good start by swatting aside Italy.
Scotland were robbed by a combination of TMO/referee after looking to have scored a legitimate try at the end of the game.
England came from behind to beat Wales, who like Italy, exposed the holes in England's work-in-progress aggressive defence.
Table: 1. Ireland 2-10 (+57) 2. England 2-8 (+5) 3. Scotland 2-5 (-3) 4. France 2-4 (-17) 5. Wales 2-3 (-3) 6. Italy 2-0 (-39)

Week 3 results: Ireland 31-7 Wales Scotland 30-21 England France 13-13 Italy
Ireland's grand slam procession continues with an easy win over Wales. Andrea Piardi became the first Italian to referee a match in the competition. Ireland's win is their 11th in a row in the Six Nations, equalling the record set by England between 2015 and 2017.
Duhan van der Merwe's hat-trick gave Scotland a fourth consecutive win over England.
Italy drew with 14-man France but agonisingly missed out on victory when Paolo Garbisi's penalty at the end of the game struck the upright. The fly half was forced to rush the kick with the shot clock ticking down after the ball had fallen off its tee.
Table: 1. Ireland 3-15 (+81) 2. Scotland 3-9 (+6) 3. England 3-8 (-4) 4. France 3-6 (-17) 5. Wales 3-3 (-27) 6. Italy 3-3 (-39)

Week 4 results: Italy 31-29 Scotland England 23-22 Ireland Wales 24-45 France
Ireland's grand slam are hopes were ended by England, who produced arguably the best performance since the 2019 World Cup to win at Twickenham. England dominated the first half after Ollie Lawrence's try but somehow found themselves 12-8 down at half time. When James Lowe's try early in the second half extended Ireland's lead, it looked like the quality would tell but England wouldn't lie down and responded through George Furbank and retook the lead with 20 minutes to go through Ben Earl's converted try. Lowe's second try of the game put Ireland back in front by a point but Marcus Smith hit a drop goal with the last kick of the game to give England a famous win and ensure the Championship goes down to the final weekend.
Italy won at home in the competition for the first time since 2013 by holding off Scotland. Louis Lynagh, son of Australian legend Michael, made his debut for Italy and was among the try scorers.
Wales-France was an entertaining back-and-forth encounter for an hour but Wales faded in the last 20 minutes and France scored 25 unanswered points to make it 4 defeats out of 4 for Warren Gatland's side.
Table: 1. Ireland 4-16 (+80) 2. England 4-12 (-3) 3. Scotland 4-11 (+4) 4. France 4-11 (+4) 5. Italy 4-7 (-37) 6. Wales 4-3 (-48)
Ireland will be champions if they avoid defeat against Scotland, while a bonus point will almost certainly be enough due to the points difference compared to England. Scotland and France still have a mathematical chance of finishing top but would need a huge turnaround in points difference so the only team with a realistic chance of stopping Ireland is England. An England bonus point win over France, combined with Ireland losing to Scotland without scoring a bonus point would give England the title. We could end up with a situation where England finish with a 4-1 win-loss record and Ireland finish 3-2 but still take the title due to bonus points.
