I haven't made up my mind on it yet. Can't help but think his core fanbase of housewives etc will be quite turned off by it.

This isn't what we are used to hear from him so I'm not sure it will be a hit.
I haven't seen the video but I feel this isn't the way to go for him.
The music business is hard.

He might have the ballads on the album as well? I like it, bit diff, shame the music industry tries to force you into a pigeon hole.

I love it But agree that he should have gone down the ballad-y route for the lead single Not sure if this will shift many of the album.

It's not the fact that it isn't a ballad that makes me think people won't like it. It's the lyrics and the way he plays himself up in the video.
Of course it's all irony, but I think some of his fans will totally miss that fact. When he sings "I want to sleep my way to the top" or "all my friends are millionaires" or "play my video, hear me on the radio" some people will probably think he's being serious. His fans are used to nothing but sincerity and honesty from him, and I think that's a big part of what they like about him, and this is totally different. If enough other people pick up on it then it won't matter if a few housewives think he's 'gone Hollywood' but if not it could be trouble for him....

I love Darren Hayes so much, he's magic! I wish he was more well-known! He has quite a large fanbase in the UK though Fingers crossed that 'Popular' does well. xxx

hiiiiiya guys... i know i know im a stranger LOL... just rushed off my feet atm! okay so i saw this thread and obv had to reply! when i first heard the song at the LP i have to say i was like oh GOD NO...dont tell me hes gonna release this...but i have to say its a song thats caught peoples attention and thats the whole point of a first single so i cant argue...its very catchy...annoyingly sometimes! about the fan thing..everyones always liked him for his honesty and sincerety, thats true, but those people that are fans, know that hes someone whos very sarcastic and takes the p*ss..so weve all seen it and i mean seeing the video...honestly theres no way you cant get the irony..and i know that his next singles are going to be completely different...and much deeper.. i think its funny andy, what you said about the industry boxing you in and it made me laugh cos its exactly what darren's said over and over and that the only way he can be honest and sincere is by singing what hes feeling...does that mean that hes constantly got to be singing ballads even if he doesnt feel it just because thats what everyone expects..? there are ballads on the album..not conventional ones, but for me its all about the voice and the lyrics..and its all there...okay im gonna quit rambling now ;D and the vid is the funniest thing ive seen in a long long time! (and im not just saying that cos i saw myself and couldnt stop laughing anyway Kav xxx

Savage Garden's first album was one of the best pop albums of the 90's IMO. The second one, I felt was somewhat overproduced and too ballad-heavy. Bland in comparison. Spin seemed to follow right in its footsteps too. So I'm glad to hear that this new album's going be have a darker, more electronic edge to it. Still haven't made up my mind about Popular yet though...
