past or present, and generally with a fair amount of popularity, but that doesn't restrict the field to oldies... I would have thought all my choices were popular present bands.

they are, anna, but i don't really want to consider a band that has only released one album because they don't really fit with the whole "greatest bands ever" thing... i mean they might be eventually, but this time last year they weren't half as popular as they are now. i mean, i left my favourite band EVER, elbow, off the list for the same reason - they're a great band imo but they haven't been releasing records for THAT long and will never be as popular as the coldplays and radioheads of our day, or in the past. sorry but i DO agree that they are popular considering their shortness of life so far, and for that reason they will be considered if slots open up...

maybe they could feature in a knockout for the 64th place with other bands that NM and Sofie will suggest;) Well, I won't suggest any obscure bands, Andy, NM might though...

*doesn't know anything about mission or shadows, either* Well, Jade, The Wedding Present are a rather successful band, thye released singles every month during 1992, all of which reached the Top 30. Only two of the songs released stayed in for 2 weeks; the rest stayed in for 1... Do you even know who b-52s are?

alright, thanks sofie... i'll put them in i've HEARD of them, but i had no idea how successful they were. i've put the other ones i don't know about in (but not the ones i didn't think were venerable enough) because we need to start the knockout now...

lol, just when i close off the suggestions, dandy jumps in yeah, the poppier ones will be classed as groups... beautiful south, smashing pumpkins ( knew we'd forgotten someone!), adam & the ants, human league, echo & the bunnymen, new order, talking heads, pogues, wonder stuff, placebo and kinks are all worthy of a place... pet shop boys could go under the poppier stuff, but i dunno... what do you guys reckon?

I could send you an Air Supply song if you like? Also, www.allmusic.com might be useful... IIIRC, Shadows were an instrumental band.
