Super Furry Animals (I LOVE them but they're not really popular or influential enough)
no, keep them!
One hit wonders in the UK because radio stations wouldn't playlist their stuff. Had 8 US top 5 hits, and 7 NM #1s, 3 NM #2s, and consistent album releases from 1976 to 1986, of which 4 (released consecutively from 1980 to 1985) were classics.
Ben Folds Five - agree to drop them, even though they had an NM #1.
Bluetones - 3 NM #1s! I think they should be kept.
Gomez
No it shouldn't. Apart from one song, the Happy Mondays were crap.
Primal Scream are totally different, they crossed genres, though they seemed to want to end up sounding too much like the Chemical Brothers.
yes drop those.
had better be on the list or else! And as Cinerama have now renamed themselves the Wedding Present you can think of them almost as one band, which means consistent album releases since 1987 to the present day, sell-out tours the whole time.
Fore-runners to brit-pop. In fact I have said they were the first brit-pop band.
I think 64 is too few. 128 would be a better target.

If you are only going to include top selling bands then you might have to exclude bands who were highly influential but didn't sell that well in their day, eg The Clash.
Abba must surely be on the list though. And glam rock acts T-Rex and Slade and possibly the Sweet.

late to the game here's my comments
Er think this band are kinda missing!!!
Metallica
and it's a brilliant list but I'd cull these
b-52s (2-3 hits not really influential and most people don't know them) mansun (pushing it) stereophonics(again pushing it) tom petty & the heartbreakers (love them but no) weezer (again great but not for this list)
Oh maybe I could list all the bands I like that should be included imo, but only had 1 Uk or are extremely indie or used marketing fan power to boost their chart standing but I do agree with NM about one thing
Blondie should be in

Jade, maybe cull a few after advice from above, and I think the only way to keep people happy about wedding present, Inspiral carpets, etc, is to have 63 that are deffo in, and then let the rest battle it out for the last spot, stick em in groups of 2 and they knock each other out til the grand final and whoever wins gets the last spot... Blondie, Metallica and Happy Mondays should be in for me I'll have a look and think who should be in the top 63, plenty of time to argue and debate though;)

argh... so much to reply to let's see how it goes to clarify - we are looking for bands who were highly influential and popular apart from having high sales... i agree that cutting it down to 64 is going to be a major headache, but once we've ensured that no more suggestions will be coming in i will weed out a few and organise a vote to cull the rest, perhaps even have a play-off for the last couple of places. about the bands you guys are mentioning... mansun - really don't want to chuck them, but two people at least have said it now, so they will go blondie - i would put them in the "groups" section happy mondays - a definite possibility, despite the fact that neil doesn't think much of them neither do i, to be frank, but if there is enough backing, i will put them in metallica - sh*t YEAH can't believe we forget them - they will go in, that's a given tom petty - i love them, but you're right, they're not popular or influential enough bluetones - i don't believe they make the cut, what do you guys think? really don't know about gomez... opinions? abba - i can't think of a more blatant case of group rather than band, so they definitely won't go in here! t-rex and slade are there already, do we really need the sweet as well? i've never heard of them, and i'm not THAT musically ignorant... i would be worried if one of the top 64 bands of all time was someone i'd never heard of... stereophonics - am tempted to chuck them out, but that seems odd as we have travis who have been even less successful, but are one of the most popular modern bands around (pre-12 memories, anyway)... weezer were recently listed somewhere as the most important band of all time... so they should be on the playoff list at the very least... and as for the neverending inspiral carpets and wedding present debate... unless someone else apart from neil and sofie really feels they should be on the list, they will get playoff places and we will see what happens there... we've forgotten james, blink-182 and the doors! i really don't WANT to make it a 128 because that is literally DOUBLE this list and we would probably throw in all sorts trying to fill the spaces... also, it would go on for EVER...

I'm not going through the whole thread but I demand to see James, Pet Shop Boys and Depeche Mode!

james really should be in... depeche mode are there already... and i had psb as a group, not a band, because of their style and this list already needs cutting down...

all sounds great to me jade, hope you're making a note of the ones that are groups not bands;) I think the stereos should be in there, shedload of singles and album sales, any that dont go in, should go in the play offs, then they at least had a shot at the top 64, fairest way, I like the Inspirals a lot, but if there's no space there's no space, simple as...

btw Greendemon I love Mansun 2, in fact I'm one of the few people that think 'Six' was one of the best albums of the 90s
and fair dos The Stereos deserve a playoff at least I suppose

abba have been dealt with - they are a group, not a band.
big YES to aerosmith... but i'm not really sure that any of the others have been "big" enough... i thought about embrace and the eagles, but left them out of (justified, as it turned out) fears that we would run out of vacancies. we could take one or two of that lot, though...

Abba were a band. Bjorn and Benny were members, played instruments and wrote the songs.
Groups, like Boyzone, don't do that.
