RE: James - are they actually remembered for more than just 'Sit Down'? Look at their discography! Doesn't agree about Ocean Colour Scene or Abba being included... You're not making it too hard for Greendemon are you;)

waaaaah! stop attacking me! hehe... ok, i need to clear up some more points: don't get me wrong, i like the eagles as much as the next person, and yes, they were big, but i wasn't sure if they were quite big enough. 64 biggest groups ever, do you really think so? it's harsh to omit many bands but i really don't think ocean colour scene were that worthy of this, but if you really think so, i'll let them have a playoff place, as well as all the other bands that andy seconded. i would like someone to point out exactly WHERE i said that the difference between a band and a group was the fact that one plays its own instruments and the other does not. perhaps those are the "official" definitions, but in this context the words are used to distinguish on a more stylistic front. i mean, what would be fairer - putting abba against the likes of spice girls, or iron maiden? i'm not saying these groups weren't equally great at the very least, but you have to draw the line somewhere or we might as well have a top 1000. and if james haven't done enough to deserve a placement on that list, about half of the currently listed bands would have to go as well.

Where do soul groups like the Four Tops or Supremes fit in?
And can I nominate Def Leppard?

def leppard will go up for consideration, yes...
as for the soul groups, would it be ok if we put them with the groups as well for stylistic reasons? it seems only fair, imo...

you seem to be the only one massively in favour of putting them on the list... i will award them a playoff place, as i'm still not convinced...

On your definition of what is a band, Abba definitely were one. They played their own instruments.
The band were called Abba after the initials of their first names (Annifrid was often called Frida though). So you note there are two 'b's in Abba, representing Bjorn and Benny...

And why do you think Blondie are a group not a band? All of them played instruments apart from Debbie Harry, who sang. And they wrote all their own songs, and influenced many others.
Sorry but this whole thing seems to be Jade's favourites - if she doesn't like them they are not in.
And I still can't see an alphabetical list of those that are in.
Can't we stick with voting on the females now and filling in the last few male positions, and then we can get together and do the bands one properly?

i'm sorry, but to clarify a couple of things that i have said NUMEROUS times but that neil apparently hasn't understood yet: - a couple of posts ago I CLEARLY SAID that IN THE CONTEXT of this list, the difference between a band and a group was NOT who plays whose instruments. i accept that abba played their own instruments BUT THAT IS NOT GOING TO GET THEM INTO THIS LIST BECAUSE THEY ARE TOO STYLISTICALLY DIFFERENT TO THE OTHER BANDS FEATURED. - as for the "jade's favourites" argument - kindly explain the absence of hell is for heroes, biffy clyro, and what about ELBOW who (as you may or may not have noticed) happen to be my favourite band ever. don't you think that if this was going to be a "jade's favourites" list, jade MIGHT have seen it fit to include them? THE ONLY REASON that i am (for the moment, anyway) presiding over who goes in and who doesn't is because this happens to be my thread. i have removed bands who lots of people don't agree with, and have added bands that lots of people do agree with. quite a few bands i dislike IMMENSELY are in this list - including pink floyd, who i myself nominated. i am trying VERY hard to make sure that this represents overall opinion across the boards, and i'm AWFULLY SORRY neil but that MIGHT not happen to be your opinion. it's clearly not mine. i have the final vote, yes, but i am doing my best to take everyone's opinions into account AS A WHOLE - not anyone's in particular, and certainly not mine. if someone apart from you and sofie is adamant that these bands you like so much should be in, i will gladly put them in. they have playoff places at the moment which is quite frankly only the result of you and your whingeing. as for the lack of alphabetical list - as i said, the cutoff point is tomorrow and i'm not going to post an updated list until i know for certain that absolutely every possibility has been considered. if you want a fairly accurate list, look at the last one i posted a few pages back. i still don't know about the others... jesus, when i took this on i didn't expect everyone to leap at my throat just for not sharing their opinion! i am trying to do my best at providing an OBJECTIVE list here and i apologise to anyone who feels like i'm not providing a list according to their opinion. sorry for the nature of this post... but come on people, cut me some slack

Because you're from a new era where "pop" has become a dirty word.
I'm surprised that Beatles fit into your category, because they made pop music.
That's what most bands made up until some kind of point around 1988 whereby "pop" because Stock Aitken Waterman and shortly after anyone who wasn't manufactured was automatically labelled "indie".
What I think you mean is you want bands classified as "rock" genre bands. Even then you have to decide how to distinguish exactly what "rock" means.
By the way, I don't know what is the big obsession with Joy Division. It seems a few people who claim to know a lot about music like them. Not many liked them at the time, and in fact they were pretty much one-hit wonders. I don't think there are even many people now who know more than one Joy Division song (Love Will Tear Us Apart). Apart from that the lead singer Ian Curtis took drugs, hanged himself, and the rest of the members carried out without him, forming New Order. Now that is a band that people have heard of.
I don't think Abba ever performed at rock festivals. But they composed their own songs, played the instruments, sold albums as well as singles, went on tour and performed live in front of large audiences. All the things rock bands do.
As for Blondie, they emerged out of the punk era going into "new wave". So are you saying that is not rock?

BLONDIE will be in Neil! Jeez, give it a rest! Abba will be in the next section, groups... Just drop it, you've said what you want to say, saying it another 4 times doesn't make it right.

I agree with Jade.
Abba were a great act and made some great songs, but they were a pop group, regardless of whether they were playing instruments or not, and they're better off in the other competition. (Note: I don't see anyone complaining about Busted's omission.)
And if Blondie are already in, why the big fuss?

Having read some of the other posts, I've just realised how much Earl P reminds me of Grandpa Simpson.
