I was listening to The Cure's Just Like Heaven on the radio and I thought to meself, What a classic!!! Then checked it and it was just low top 30, it even missed the top 20, and it was not from a best-selling album, or was the 56789th single, it didn;t even help album sales...
Can u think of other songs that are really classic but flopped when originally released ??

in the 80's, any top 40 single was considered a hit, not a flop. it would have sold more than alot of top 10 singles these days.

Then I'd say: Classics which missed the Top 20 !!!
I know some other songs that would fit like for instance Dreams by the Cranberries, but the release helped the album go to 1 and the album sold buckets!! Another one could be The Blower's Daughter by Damien Rice but this was taken from a best-selling album and it also helped boost album sales...
So Dreams or The Blower's Daughter relative chart failure can be more or less explained... but not for Just Like Heaven!!!

Velvet Underground have a few classics, but these didn't even make the charts apart from "Venus In Furs" which got to #71!.

Ooh, loads...
How Soon Is Now by The Smiths only reached Number 24 until it was rereleased in 1992 and then it only reached Number 16. A few weeks later, There Is A Light That Never Goes Out only reached Number 25.
Waterfall by The Stone Roses stiffed at 27.
This Woman's Work by Kate Bush was a mere 25.
Sure Shot by Beastie Boys, Number 27.
Here Comes Your Man by The Pixies, just 54.
Think (Number 26) and Chain Of Fools (37) being Aretha Franklin's most obviously overlooked songs.
Been caught Stealing by Janes's Addiction (34).
Stand by R.E.M., a mere 48.
Raspberry Beret by Prince, Number 25.
Stop Your Sobbing by The Pretenders (34).

This would be a good topic for the dance forum. There are loads of classic anthems that weren't significant chart hits.
"For An Angel" by Paul Van Dyk comes to mind, it only made #28 but is still heavily requested in clubs and on dance radio shows.

'Fools Gold' by the Stone Roses made a mere #25. I'm sure it made top 10 when first released in 1989. As for what constitutes a classic that's a matter of opinion surely?

...and which is a pretty damn dreadful song by stone roses standards i've got to mention the la's "there she goes" back in '90... ok, so 13 isn't really a flop, but it's worse than you'd expect for such an iconic modern classic

I think that song is really overrated - it just annoys me.

I found another classic-flop: Alanis Morissette, You Oughta Know... although it peaked just outside the top 20, this should have done far better!!!!
On seconds thoughts, yep, I think we might count The Smiths 'There is a light that never goes out' as a classic!! but it's chart performance is a bit special because it was never out as a single when originally released (1986?) but years later as part of a Best Of. It's the same as I Wanna be Adored by the Stone Roses.
And yep, probably the Pixies have some classic flops, like Monkey gone to heaven!!
