038 Rumble Strips 'Girls & Boys In Love' (09- 05-07-10-14-14-18-24-26*) www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6832Ndqz5gShe weren't that pretty, you ain't too smart...I didn't become aware of this song until about 5 weeks after its release but I loved it so much I had to chart it. It's so brilliant, just so different from anything else out there. Really weird yet really good at the same time. It's definitely not for everyone, though... 037 The Shins 'Sea Legs' (28-21-06- 02*) www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFwX2ee9pb8I'm a victim to the impact of these words, and this rhyme...Recent fourth single from The Shins showing that they can do slow and mellow just as well as they can do uptempo pop. Another fantastic single from an equally fantastic album. 036 Roisin Murphy 'Let Me Know' (30-10- 03- 03-05-08-13-16-16-22-25*) www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_vCOOW_BsEI turn the other way, you could never turn me down...I did like 'Overpowered' but didn't think it was that great. This is different though, a pop masterpiece with a wonderful vocal and a brilliant catchy hook. Getting the album for Christmas, if it's anything like as good it'll be a belter!

035 The Cribs 'Men's Needs' (40-27-08-03-02- 01-03-09-12-18-22-29-34) www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCNTYi9fHuoHave you noticed I've never been impressed by your friends from New York and London...When I first heard this I absolutely adored it and thought it'd be a contender for my single of the year but after a while and a lot of listening Ryan's voice throughout the verses do get slightly irritating. That, coupled with the fact that the album is rubbish sees them miss out on a top 30 place. 034 Arcade Fire 'Keep The Car Running' (30-27-24-25-17-06- 05- 05-13-28) www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFFpL6Jj5IIThere's a weight that's pressing down, late at night you can hear that sound...After a while I got really bored with this which is a great shame because I love it again now and it's about my favourite track on the album. It was always going to be tough to follow up the excellent 'Funeral' and match the top 3 position of 'Rebellion (Lies)' two years ago but an album in my top 10 of the year and three singles in my top 40 should be regarded as a great success. 033 Gwen Stefani 'The Sweet Escape' (40-05-03- 01- 01-02-08-09-08-08-16-19-24-33) www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMUOg7BebKEYou held me down, I'm at my lowest boiling point...Not someone I always like too much but she is capable of some brilliant pop. This was probably the first song of the year I really loved spending two weeks at the top of my chart in February but I really don't like it anywhere near as much now. It's still good, but I'm glad my end of year isn't entirely based on my chart. 11th best song of the year? No chance! It's again a great shame that what is by FAR the best track on her album has been robbed of a single release. Twice she could've had top 10s but had to settle for top 40s!

032 Just Jack 'Starz In Their Eyes' (04-03-03- 02-03-05-08-15-23-32) www.youtube.com/watch?v=K72tfYdYROoUsed to be satisfied but now you feel like Mick Jagger...The best one hit wonder of the year. I really liked this and it showed so much promise for an album. A wonderfully catchy pop song much better than what it was held off the top by. But the album is abysmal, apart from last years first single 'Writer's Block' and this it's awful, easily the worst album I've heard all year. 031 Malcolm Middleton 'Fight Like The Night' ( 02- 02- 02-04-09-15-21-24-26-36) www.youtube.com/watch?v=szZWURbh6eMThis town is a great place, I love you at night...Not everyone has only heard of him because of Colin Murray's campaign. His Christmas number one 'contender' is the fourth single off his 'A Brighter Beat' album. This superb piece of music was the third towards the end of the summer. Fellow Scot Jenny Reeve guest on vocals and it really makes the song work, their voices complement each other so much. I also love how he's almost speaking in the verses, in a wonderful Scottish accent. Almost has two songs in the top 30 but not quite. Even if this was one place higher, he still wouldn't have. I wonder what could be next?

030 Malcolm Middleton 'f*** It, I Love You' ( 01- 01-03-06-14-22-32-29-40) www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxbjgUif1Nwf*** it, I love you, there you go. Three little words on a mobile phone...And he appears again. It would have fared better had it not entered my chart at the top and let to climb instead. But the week I first heard it I had to download it and listened to it loads. I loved it right from first listen and am really quite gutted it's only #30. It's so lovely and the lyrics are so good. Brilliant.

029 Pet Shop Boys 'Integral' (03-03- 01- 01-02-07-07-10-18-22-40) www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7TSDUHhPIwSterile. Immaculate. Rational. Perfect...If this had rightfully been a single off their last album this would've easily been in my top 5 of last year. But because it wasn't released until I'd had it about 18 months it had lost some of the magic it used to have. Still a brilliant song, just doesn't feel very '2007' so has to settle for #29.

028 Arctic Monkeys 'Fluorescent Adolescent' (27-17-11-11-07- 06-10-08-11-14-18-26-35) www.youtube.com/watch?v=N64QMKEbJQgOh the boy's a slag, the best you've ever had...Their first appearence! And I've loved all of their singles this year so there's more to come! At first I didn't really see what all the fuss was about. It was god but I didn't think it was as great as everyone made it out to be. But after a while it really does click, it's so catchy and for a while I couldn't get it out of my head. A fine song.

027 Los Campesinos! 'The International Tweexcore Underground' (17- 01- 01-02-04-06-07-12-17-21*) www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHt2CveSXqEI bet you twenty pounds if you knew ten years ago how pretty you'd turn out then you'd never have gotten your ears pierced...Recent single by male/female indie band which is still on my chart. I love everything about them and everything they've ever released but I'm glad it's been left off the album. It's fabulous but the more new material, the better!

026 Interpol 'No I In Threesome' (23-12- 03*) www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDm4Vs7xl6UBabe it's time we gave something new a try...One of the highlights off this years 'Our Love To Admire' album it's Interpol at their best. It's also probably the most open and personal song they've ever done. It's only just out so has only had three weeks on my chart but should enter the new year as number one. The second song ever to top my chart without a physical release, after the Pet Shop Boys.

025 Guillemots 'Annie, Let's Not Wait' ( 01- 01- 01- 01-04-07-11-19-26-39) www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2qximPa7coI found something crying, it was my soul, I fed it milk so it wouldn't grow old...The final single from my favourite album of last year. I still love it so much and is one of my few top favourites ever. Without bothering to check I think this may have got them their highest UK chart placing though I'm not sure. Another song that probably would've done better had it been released a few weeks later though only one song has spent as long at the top as this all year so it did something right... Surprisingly, this is the highest they've ever been in my End Of Year chart. I never fully appreciated 'Trains To Brazil' and 'Made Up Love Song #43' until last year, both would probably have been top 10 had they not been in my 2005 one!

And now for this years undeserving pop flop! 024 Stefy 'Chelsea' (26-04- 01-02-05-06-05-09-11-17-25-37) www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1RMCuIUB9cShe called me while you were kissing so I could hear what I was missing...A UK #82 It deserved so much more. A pop masterpiece which suprisingly doesn't sample 'Sweet Dreams'. I was shocked when I first discovered that. I've heard other songs from them but none match the brilliance of this tale of cheating. And she's really fit!

023 The Sounds 'Tony The Beat (Push It)' (07- 01- 01-03-06-10-12-16-19-23-26-28-32-39) www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbJ1M0di2rwI like it that way and you know it, so let's do it, do it do it real good...And whilst we're on the subject of songs which should've done much better than they did. Swedish Indie Pop which I adored when it came out (though I believe it may have been a second release?) but not quite so much now. Still excellent though and worthy of its top 30 placing.

022 Los Campesinos! 'You! Me! Dancing!' (19-12-06- 04- 04-07-15-21-25-35) www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nj6SO_yKMe8And on the way home it seems like a good idea to go paddling in the fountain, and that's because it is a good idea...The first song to appear that I've placed in my top 10 favourite singles of the year, at number 5 infact. But a relatively poor chart performance means it doesn't quite make the top 20. I first got this song at the beginning of the year and absolutely adored it but because I played it so much that by the time it was released I was slightly tired of it. It's regrown on me now though and it's definitely one of the years best songs.

021 Arctic Monkeys 'Teddy Picker' (29-13-03- 01- 01*) www.youtube.com/watch?v=2A2XBoxtcUAThe kids all dream of making it, whatever that means...Right from when I got the album this has been one of my favourites. I was surprised it was released as a single though, thought it would be just me that really liked it. Don't really know quite what makes me like it so much but I just can't help singing and nodding along when it's on. My fourth Christmas number one!

020 Monkey Swallows The Universe 'Bloodline' (33-16-14- 08-09-09-11-09- 08-13-13-18*) www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dd4PzhdOTMYAnd you might think it's foolish, sometimes I think it's foolish...I decided to download this without having ever heard it after seeing it at the top of Dandy's chart. And what a great decision that was. Even though it was a while ago now I still love it as much as ever and it still grows. It's the first of seven songs in my top 20 to be sung by a female and the only song that never reached my personal chart top 5, although it has spent quite a while not far from it.

019 LCD Soundsystem 'North American Scum' (30-11- 01-02-03-07-12-18-22-27-29-27-33-36) www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieT_lf9wK28So throw a party till the cops come in and bust it up, let's go North Americans...Although I'd liked the stuff from their/his previous album it wasn't until this and subsequently everything that followed that I loved anything of theirs. I can't imagine this being for everyone but I do love it. About being confused for being British a lot of the time this reached #40 in the UK chart. A great success!

018 The Wombats 'Let's Dance To Joy Division' (36-16-02- 01-02-06-06-09-16-17-20-23-24*) www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyCi4CMD29wLead you through the dancefloor, up to the dj booth, you know what to ask for, know what to ask for...They may not be particularly original, or even particularly good but there's something about them I can't help but love. Fun and catchy, you can't help but sing along and dance. And that's enough sometimes.

017 Rilo Kiley 'Breakin' Up' (22-05- 01- 01- 01-02-04*) www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJYPGL55cAIHere's to all the pretty girls you're gonna meet...A few won't like this because it's extrmely different from their usual sound; it's about as poppy as you can get. But if you forget it's them and just take it as a song it's absolutely wonderful. It should've been a mainstream hit but wasn't. Either way it's still magnificent and I love it.

016 Arctic Monkeys 'Brianstorm' (14-08- 02-05-12-09-12-15-20-30) www.youtube.com/watch?v=30w8DyEJ__0Some want to kiss some want to kick you, there's not a net you couldn't slip through...This really should have been a number one both for me and for the UK. I think this is probably their best song but for some reason didn't quite appreciate it in its full genius when it was released so isn't one of their three personal chart number ones. Their highest position on my YTD though. They really are quite excellent. There are better bands around but they really are a cut above the rest of the mainsteam indie bands around at the moment.
