And so Friday is decision day and it appears to be one of the closest races ever.
Chicago is said to be the slight favourite and its cause may be helped by the presence of President Obama, though the other 3 cities will all have high-profile backing at the ceremony in Copenhagen.
Chicago is aiming to become the 4th American city, after St. Louis, Los Angeles and Atlanta, to host the summer games.
If Rio is chosen, it will be the first time the Olympics have gone to South America.
Tokyo is the only one of the candidates to have hosted the games before, back in 1964, but there are doubts over whether the games will go back to Asia so soon after the Beijing games.
Madrid is also seen as an outsider, not because of the bid, but purely due to the fact London is hosting in 2012 and with the 2014 Winter Olympics also in Europe, the 2016 games are more likely to go to another continent.
Odds: 4/6 Chicago 15/8 Rio de Janeiro 9/1 Madrid 22/1 Tokyo

Being a Yank, I have a soft spot for Chicago, but I'd rather see them go to Rio, since South America has never hosted the Olympics.

Taking into account the practicality of viewing and different time zones, I will support Madrid

Madrid is a non-starter - they will never go to Europe twice in a row and I don't understand why they wasted the money bidding.
It is almost a foregone conclusion that Madrid will host the next games to be held in Europe although a few years back that was also the case for Toronto being the next city in America (the continent) to host them.
I can't see them going back to Asia so soon after China so that leaves Chicago and Rio.
Since it calims to be a global organisation if Rio has the infrastructure to hold them and it would appear it has then it is surely only fair they should go there as they have never been to South America before. Memories of Atlanta which were probably the worst games ever and the scandal of Salt Lake City linger on.
It was thought that because of a series of setbacks Rio had over taken Chicago about a month ago but it is very close and the concensus now is that the allure of President Obama and his wife will win them for Chicago.
Despite all their talk they'll go for the big bucks.
Boo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is amazing. I am guessing the totals were all very similar.
Rio OUGHT to get it, just cos they've never been to South America, but I can't help thinking they will give it as a present to Samaranch.

And Tokyo is eliminated in the second round...
So it's Rio or Madrid...

I wouldn't be surprised if there was less than 10 votes separating all 4 in the first round.

Can't believe this but delighted.
Surely, surely Madrid couldn't win it?

IMO, this was the fair and right choice.
It's going to be interesting to see the breakdown of voting in the 1st round.
First though, London 2012 and (hopefully) Prime Minister Cameron.

but I'd rather see them go to Rio, since South America has never hosted the Olympics. Agreed! Used to have Brazilian friends at school, can imagine they'll be chuffed at this!

Madrid picked up a grand total of 3 votes out of the 40 spare? Looks like there was a strong pro-American party that had to choose between north and south at the start.

Rio is a great choice. Will be a superb venue, and sends an important message to the rest of the world. Also, a great time zone for Europeans and North Americans.
Madrid would be a good location for the next European Olympics. Barcelona hosted a terrific Olympics, and I'm sure Madrid would match its rival.
Japan has hosted plenty of major events in the past few years, including a Winter Olympics. With recent summer Olympics in Beijing and Seoul, it is difficult to make a geo-political case for Japan.
After the incompetence and arrogance of Atlanta, and the corruption of Salt Lake City, I hope it is a long, long time before the USA gets to host again. If it has to go back to the USA, then I can't think of a better location than Chicago.
