So 3rd July, Hyde Park, 50,000 people. What an atmosphere.
After getting there a little late, about 5pm, and missing Deerhoff and majority of Florence and the Machine, *sad face*, the African duo, who I never remember their names came on. With the exception of Welcome to Mali, I recognised nothing and everything was just way too samey. Definately a first support band not a 3rd support band slotting would have suited.
Vampire Weekend followed slowly the tempo and atmosphere raised. With a mad bottle throwing to get the crowd fully awake. (Been on Blur's forum) and seen that this is being seen as bad. Me and mates saw it as a laugh, the bottles are all plastic, do not hurt and a lot of people made a fuss over nought. It happens at a lot of gigy festivals. Anyway, the best was saved til last and the crowd were fully into the moshing.
Finally Blur came onto stage at 8.15-8.20pm. With a massive cheer for a welcome they went straight into the first song: She's So High. Everyone went mad and the moshing began. It is amazing 50,000 people singing together in harmony. Not much to add to the rest except Song 2 was amazing, I don't think I will ever be at a gig with the same reaction to Song 2 got.
One less pleasing thing is the fact that physical harm was brought about, pushing, shoving and moshing is all expected, but the older generation of Blur fans were very much trouble makers. One older guy punched someone me and my mate had been talking to with no reason right in the face. I was shoved by some old fat guy moaning before he walked off and I hadn't done anything, followed by finding out that at the back of the crowd (look at crowd picture) a guy was beaten up by someone who ran away. The Met have been informed.
The security were ok, 4 guards who half way through got Albarn to make an announcment to make everyone move backwards, but still Thursday night 500 people were pulled over the barriers and Friday night was as bad if worse. Continuously pulling people over. Anyway, over with the bad points.
The gig will be one of the best I will ever attend, so emotional with the knowledge that that could well be the last gig Blur play in London. Even Albarn was close to tears through much of it.
