The 12 acts nominated for this year's Mercury Prize will be announced later.
La Roux, Doves, Florence and the Machine and the BBC's Sound of 2009 winner, Little Boots, have all been tipped for this year's shortlist. The award, now in its 17th year, aims to promote the best British and Irish albums of the last 12 months. Elbow took the title last year, with their fourth studio album, The Seldom Seen Kid. This year's winner will be announced on 8 September. Florence and the Machine have been making waves since their debut single Kiss with a Fist in 2008 and won the Brit Awards' Critics' Choice prize for best rising star. Little Boots' debut album, Hands, which was released in June this year, peaked at number five in the UK chart, while La Roux's Bulletproof is currently number two in the singles chart. The prize and the accompanying £20,000 cheque has been presented annually since 1992, when it was given to Primal Scream for Screamadelica. Presenter Lauren Laverne will announce the contenders at The Hospital Club in London just before midday.
Bookmakers have listed Florence and the Machine as the favourites to be included on the list at 4/1, with Doves, Little Boots and Bat for Lashes all at 7/1.

Florence Walsh has got a lot going for her right in this moment of time.
An ace album, a brill single and a very good live performance, not to mention better then average looks!

'Lungs' is completely dull in comparison to 'Two Suns'. A much better album, but I'm sure Florence will win.

Well, for a change, I have actually heard of all of these.
And I actually own TEN of them!! I think Friendly Fires is probably my favourite out of them all, though. Pretty flawless record.

I've heard of more than usual this year - and I own a grand total of ONE! I'm not cool at all. I hope Bat For Lashes wins... I'm tempted to have a flutter on her actually, I have a really good feeling about that album.

so happy for Lisa Hannigan!!! She's the girl in my avatar that used to sing with Damien Rice. Her album was released in Ireland last summer (it's called Sea Saw, by the way) and it's an amazing album. Should start a thread about her in the alt_divas section, I could so write a phD about her!!!! She has the most amazing voice and she's the most beautiful woman walking on earth. Period. I would like Florence And The Machine to win. I think it's a faboulus album.
But I wouldn't mind Kasabain or La Roux winning.
