A sad day! Ilkeston Town Football Club has been wound up by the High Court over an unpaid tax bill. Lawyers acting for the club had pleaded with the court to give it more time to pay the outstanding £50,000 to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). They said the sale of one of the club's star players was expected to generate £20,000 within the next two weeks. But HMRC pressed on with the winding up petition with the club being described as "plainly insolvent" by the court. The court heard Ilkeston Town's chairman, Gary Hodder, was negotiating with investors interested in purchasing the Blue Square Bet North club. It also argued that it could afford to pay off its tax debt by instalments of £1,000 a month from income from the start of the season. After a two-minute hearing, court registrar Christine Derrett sealed the club's fate when she said: "I'm sorry, the company is plainly insolvent and I therefore make the final compulsory order."

Always sad to see a club go under, especially when there are clubs with much bigger debts.
That said, I don't see how they could pay the money back when they've apparently lost £2m in two years.
Sadly, following on from the Pakistan cricket allegations, Croydon Athletic could be gone soon as it looks like the owner was using the club to launder dirty money.

I've been ranting about this in the football thread, didn't see this one, it's a crying shame, not sure why they couldn't go into administration first and give them a chance to sort their debts out? Croydon are well gone, next two games postponed, manager gone, apparently there's always been a suspicion they've been living beyond their means for a long time. And if he has been using the club to launder dirty money, is it not possible that the same happens at bigger clubs, not that I'm going to mention any names.

The owner of Croydon FC has been threatening to sue newspapers that have confused the two during the Pakistan scandal.

My brother's teams game against Ilkeston Town reserves is still apparently going ahead next Wednesday, but has been moved from evening until 14:00, so Ilkeston don't have to pay for the floodlights being used!!
I can't see it going ahead though, if only for the fact that 90% of the opposition's squad will be in 6th form/college on a Wednesday afternoon...
