Gareth Bale should be on the list too, has played way better than Giggs did last season and been nominated for world player of the year

Footballers don't deserve this award ever.
If I pick one of them, it would be Cavendish, the IOM cyclist had an amazing Tour de France. He has been the most consistent of the year.

But he didn't WIN though, he should not be rewarded for failure (Cavendish) when other candidates were winners in their chosen sport

An athlete who wasn't expected to reach the Olympic final in their event but does so and wins a silver medal shouldn't be considered. BTW, what has Gareth Bale won this year?

He won more then the others! Several stage wins, several medals. More evidence of success then the others!

Who did win in their field then? I'm sorry, but if 15 (FIFTEEN!!!!) times Professional World Darts Champion (1990, 1992, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009, 2010) Phil "The Power" Taylor does not walk away with the prize after being omitted from the shortlist year after year, then there is something very wrong with the Great British public. And this year he scored an unbelievable two nine darters in the same match: The Final of the Premier League Darts final. www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8C5o2duE6wThat is the sporting equivalent of a striker scoring a double hat-trick in the European Champions League Final.

Then he deserves to be in reckoning, im not much of a darts fan though

But he didn't WIN though, he should not be rewarded for failure (Cavendish) when other candidates were winners in their chosen sport He wasn't trying to win the Tour de France. He's a sprinter. His sole job is to win as many stages as possible for his team. In that respect, he succeeded. He also won the green jersey in the Tour of Spain.

Who did win in their field then? What the nominees have achieved this year: Cavendish: won 5 stages of the Tour de France and won the green jersey at the Tour of Spain Daley: won 2 gold medals at the Commonwealth Games Ennis: won heptathlon gold at European Championships in a field that consisted of the world's top heptathletes Haye: successfully defended his world heavyweight title twice McCoy: won Grand National for first time and was champion jockey for 15th year in a row McDowell: became first UK golfer in over a decade to win a major and sank winning putt for Europe in Ryder Cup Swann: was part of England's World T20 winning team, became world's top ranked spinner, was nominated for ICC Player of the Year Taylor: won world title for 15th time, achieved two nine-dart finishes in the same night at Premier League finals Westwood: became world #1 golfer, was part of Europe's Ryder Cup winning team Williams: won gold in skeleton bob, Britain's first individual Winter Olympics gold medalist for 30 years

I can't argue with most of those on the list.
The one change I'd make would be Beth Tweddle for Tom Daley, seeing as she won a world title.
Phillips Idowu and Mo Farah are unlucky to miss out.
Team of the Year will surely be between the England cricket team again (though they may focus on the World T20-winning team) and the Ryder Cup team.
Andy Flower seems a likely choice for Coach of the Year.

Surprised McCoy is there tbh, no offence to him but given he a champion jockey he would have the pick of the best horses and at the end of the day what matters most in racing is how good the horse is so McCoy is only as good as the horse he rides

30 national and regional publications each nominated 10 people for the award. The 10 with the most votes were shortlisted. There was a four-way tie for 8th place so a panel of six former winners decided the three that went on the shortlist.
The number of votes received was:
1. Tony McCoy 30 2. Graeme McDowell 29 3. Lee Westwood 27 4. Jessica Ennis 25 5. Graeme Swann 21 6. Mark Cavendish 18 7. David Haye 16 8= Tom Daley 14 8= Mo Farah 14 8= Phil Taylor 14 8= Amy Williams 14 12. Andy Murray 12 13. Beth Tweddle 11 14. Andrew Strauss 8 15. Gareth Bale 6 16. Rory McIlroy 4 17= Rebecca Adlington 3 17= Lewis Hamilton 3 17= Amir Khan 3 17= Paul Scholes 3 21= Ricky Burns 2 (Boxing - won super-featherweight world title) 21= Didier Drogba 2 21= Dai Greene 2 (Athletics - won European & Commonwealth gold in 400m hurdles) 21= Fran Halsall 2 (Swimming - won European & Commonwealth gold and 10 medals in total) 21= Paul Hanagan 2 (Horse Racing - champion jockey on the flat) 21= David Weir 2 (still playing for Scotland at the age of 40) 27= Charlie Adam 1 (Blackpool footballer - nominated by The Sun) 27= Maggie Alphonsi 1 (Rugby Union - part of the England team that reached the women's World Cup final) 27= Chris Ashton 1 (Rugby Union) 27= Danielle Brown 1 (Archery - first Paralympic athlete to win Commonwealth gold for England in able-bodied competition) 27= Jenson Button 1 27= Steve Davis 1 (reached World Snooker quarters at age of 52) 27= Dario Franchitti 1 (won Indycar title) 27= Katherine Grainger 1 (Rowing - won world gold) 27= Audley Harrison 1 (nominated by Zoo) 27= Mark Lewis-Francis 1 27= Lewis Moody 1 27= Eoin Morgan 1 27= Emma Pooley 1 (Cycling - won world Time Trial title)

You can't just stick anyone on a good horse and expect it to win. I'd say the jockey is a bigger factor in horse racing than the driver in F1, particularly in jump racing.
