Israeli former football international Avi Cohen dies aged 54BBC News 28 December 2010 Last updated at 16:15[/b] www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-12086368The defender was the first Israeli to play in the English top flight when he signed for Liverpool in 1979. His honours included a Championship medal in 1979-80 & Eurapian Cup medal in 1981 with Liverpool. He also played for the Israeli national team 51 times, scoring 3 goals. His son Tamir is currently an international professional footballer who plays for Bolton Wanderers in the English Premier League and the Israeli national team. On 20 December 2010, Cohen was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash. On 28 December 2010, Ichilov Hospital declared that Cohen was brain dead. It was announced later the same day that he had succumbed to his injuries and had died. RIP Avi YNWA

I met him in 2007. He came to an event as part of our trip. We had a penalty shoot-out there - he missed.

He got his European medal just before Liverpool were denied access along with rest of England!
