Oh My! at the Equatorial Guinea woman catching the ball after it hit the post, holding it for a couple of seconds and then dropping it and the ref and linesperson not noticing! The poor striker was screaming handball, and noone took any notice, I'm sure there will be a link on youtube or the bbc website soon, you have to see it! Oooh it's on youtube!

Brazil are through, Equatorial Guinea are out. Australia will go through if they avoid defeat to Norway.

Great performance by England this afternoon. Hope Powell made changes and they paid off. Ellen White had a great game up front. Sophie Bradley and the rest of the defence were fantastic. Jill Scott was rock solid in midfield again. She's been England's player of the tournament so far, for me.
It was a must-win as Germany were always more likely to beat France later on. A great chance to make the semis now, with Brazil the most likely opponents if we get there.

Oh, what a surprise. FIFA have had the video of the handball incident removed.

There were some poor decisions today as well. Really simple stuff like goal kicks being given instead of corners. On one occasion, the England keeper caught the ball at her near post but her momentum took her over the line for a corner. Goal kick given.
The general standard of officiating at this tournament seems to have been very poor.

Much better performance from England, and two very good individual goals, I do think we are still susceptible to giving the ball away too easily, but hopefully we can beat the French and see what comes after that...

Now that Wimbledon is over i'm taking more of an interest in this, shame it started so early, thought it was usually on sometime from Jul-Sep usually? Tho seem to remember the 95 tournament being held in June. Didn't get round to watching the England game yesterday and unfortunately will miss the QF on Sat, but superb result last night!
Saw pictures of that Equatorial Guinea handball, but thought it was a striker! Having just seen the video that mrh put up it was so casual as if she'd heard the whistle go or something!

The general standard of officiating at this tournament seems to have been very poor. Doesn't surprise me. I still remember that qualifying game last season when the England keeper was sent off after the opposition player (forget who we played now) went down feigning contact.

Well that happens in the Premiership all the time, so cant just be blamed on female officials...

Hadn't even thought about the Prem. Mrh referred to poor officiating in this tournament and I was just using an example from the last womens match I saw. Maybe not the right choice of example though.

totally unrelated but i read when a male professional footballers are injured they stay down 30 seconds longer on average than their female counterparts although that stat must be significantly distorted by drogba and ronaldo alone

Interestingly, there's a FIFA-qualified female referee from Korea who sometimes refs Wearside League games up here as she's based at Durham University now. She's also refereed the women's FA Cup final.

And yet again, yet again, the team that goes first wins on penalties. As happens in 60% of cases.
Just how difficult is it to have an alternative that depends on skill rather than luck of the toss? Like, say, a replay? It's not as if there's never enough time. Or just do it like a tennis tie-break - France take the first, England the next two, and so on.

Well we started well, so you cant blame it on that can you? Perfect start by saving one, but I do wish the goalie had stood still to see where the French women were putting them rather than dancing around and then going completely the wrong way! Oh well, after some England games I've been gutted when we've lost on penalties as I think we deserved to win, that wasn't the case here, and why we were playing for penalties if we cant score all 5 I'm not quite sure.

The hand ball by the Guinea player is humorous to watch, England I thought were through, so didn't watch after 83 minutes, hadn't seen first 82 either...

The Germans are out though which is always good to see! Not often I cheer for Japan...
