I've recently attended my 100th rock/pop concert (i.e. professional performers where I had to pay for a ticket, and therefore not including buskers, bloke in a pub, mates at uni, etc.)
I thought it was time for a best / worst list...
FIRST: Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, Southampton Gaumont, 1984 LATEST: Simple Minds, Birmingham Academy, 2012 MOST: Bob Dylan (4), Bryan Adams (4), David Bowie (3), Duran Duran (3), OMD (3), Bruce Springsteen (3) BEST in a BIG VENUE: Rolling Stones - really put on a show - costumes, lights, video screens, over exuberance, great song catalogue BEST in a SMALL VENUE: Manic Street Preachers BEST NOSTALGIA: Steel City Tour 2008 - Human League, ABC, Heaven 17 BEST SUPPORT: Scissor Sisters (supporting Duran Duran 2004), just as "Comfortably Numb" was riding high in the charts SWEATIEST: Big Country, front row in a regional theatre, 1985 WORST: Shakin' Stevens - couldn't be bothered to play any of his hits, except his current single, "Jezebel", which he played 3 times WORST, but saved by the support act: Van Morrison, on one of his especially curmudgeonly nights - rescued by Lonnie Donegan's delightful warm-up set WORST VALUE: Erasure, Birmingham NEC 1988 - just 55 minutes on stage, and supported by the dreadful Nitzer Ebb WORST SUPPORT: Primal Scream (supporting New Order 1987) - Gillespie so stoned he fell off the stage twice, plus 30 minutes of feedback from the bass player MOST FAMOUS (in a good way): Mandela Birthday Concert at Wembley 1988, 18 months before he was released; concert featured Dire Straits, Whitney Houston, George Michael, Eurythmics, UB40, Simple Minds, Stevie Wonder, Peter Gabriel, Sting, BeeGees, Tracy Chapman... MOST FAMOUS (in a bad way): INXS Sheffield Arena 1997 - Michael Hutchence's last UK gig MOST OPPORTUNISTIC: Bruce Springsteen, Denver 1992 - I was driving into the city to catch an early morning flight, and heard there were a few restricted view seats left; turns out they were 3rd row behind the stage, with no restricted view at all - brilliant night MOST SCARY: Prince, Wembley 1988 - row 6, made regular eye contact with one of his backing singers, thought I'd be called backstage afterwards for another "performance" TRIUMPHANT HOMECOMING: Pulp, Sheffield Arena 1996 at the end of the "Common People" tour BEST BETWEEN SONG BANTER: Billy Bragg - funny, modest, occasionally acerbic, not as much polemic as you'd expect STRANGEST LINE-UP: U2 supported by Kelis, 2001 CREDIBILITY GIG: Franz Ferdinand, Toronto 2005 - they'd just broken in the UK but were unknown in Canada - I persuaded a bunch of mates to go & FF put on a fine show, making it big in Canada a few months later SURPRISINGLY GOOD: Sugababes 2006 - far more charisma, improvisation, stage presence & warmth than I'd expected, plus some great tunes BEST VENUE: Hammersmith Odeon - iconic, great atmosphere, easy access WORST VENUE: Milton Keynes Bowl - 3 hour queues to leave the car park, not enough catering or toilets, need to be there early to see anything THRILLED I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY: Sparks playing "Number One In Heaven" album in full 2008 - one of my favourite albums of all time, but impossible to tour in 1978 because technology wasn't sophisticated enough TOP OF MY WANT TO SEE LIST: Cure TOP OF MY WISH I'D SEEN LIST: Talking Heads, before they split up TOP OF MY WISH I WAS GIGGING AT A YOUNGER AGE: Led Zepellin, had stopped touring by 1984; or ABBA, of course FANTASY GIG: Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis & Johnny Cash, circa 1957

having seen more bands at festivals than gigs i have included a few on my list, i only started in 2000 when i was 15 so i have a small pool to choose from but this looks fun so here it goes FIRST: Toploader at V2000, they were the first act of the day LATEST: Brett Domino Trio (2011) Inside Out, Darlington MOST: Biffy Clyro (4), Feeder (3), Kula Shaker (3), REM (2), Kings of Leon (2), Coldplay (2), The Jeevas (2), The Wombats (2) BEST in a BIG VENUE: Rage Against The Machine (2008), simply amazing BEST in a SMALL VENUE: Ash (2009) Inside out in Darlington BEST NOSTALGIA: Cast (2010) Newcastle 02 BEST SUPPORT: The Veils (2003) supporting The Jeevas (Crispian Mills from Kula Shaker) at Newcastle Uni. I now adore The Veils...all for £6 SWEATIEST: Kula Shaker (2007) Liverpool Carling Academy, the place was jumping WORST: Kings of Leon in 2008, having seen them in 2003 i was so excited to see them again with all their major hits, i will never go see them again, halfway through i was that bored i went to sit down WORST VALUE: Erasure, Birmingham NEC 1988 - just 55 minutes on stage, and supported by the dreadful Nitzer Ebb WORST SUPPORT: Dr Joel at a Kula Shaker Gig (2007) Liverpool Carling Academy, who? you might ask, please never look him up MOST OPPORTUNISTIC: Ou Est Le Swimming Pool (2009) i was just in a club and they were playing in the basement so went to watch them MOST SCARY: Biffy Clyro in Hull (2007), the crowd were wild, maybe its a hull thing TRIUMPHANT HOMECOMING: Futureheads secret xmas gig in Darlington (2008), although not from Darlington, they are from nearby Sunderland, it was a pretty epic gig and a return to the north east, they were drinking in the bar before the gig mingling among the fans, it was a propper northern gig BEST BETWEEN SONG BANTER: Has to be Dick Valentine from Electric 6, he just has a unique sense of humor and everyone i was with, even if they were not fans ended up enjoying the gig SURPRISINGLY GOOD: Pendulum (2008), they were great, the atmosphere was what struck me, the crowd were vibing off the whole experience even before they came on, not being a big drum and bass fan i was bowled over BEST VENUE: Haven't been to any great venues, they don't exist up here WORST VENUE: Probably the Asylum in Hull, it was very over crowded THRILLED I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY: to see REM twice before they split up, one of the best bands over the last 30 years TOP OF MY WANT TO SEE LIST: I'm seeing the Cure in august but i would have to go for the black keys...who i will also be seeing this year TOP OF MY WISH I'D SEEN LIST: Probably Queens of the Stone Age or Bloc Party at T in the Park in 2005, instead of seeing one of them we went to see The Subways, duh...but i wish i was around to see Nirvana or The Smiths TOP OF MY WISH I WAS GIGGING AT A YOUNGER AGE: Any gig in the 90's, to many to list being so young, but seeing Nirvana would of been great FANTASY GIG: Circa 1980, Queen, Led Zeppelin, ELO, Neil Young, David Bowie and Sparks

WORST: Cranberries WORST VALUE: REM (Murrayfield might as well have been watching them on an iphone that was sitting on the bottom of my garden) The bill at my WORST VENUE gig (Milton Keynes bowl) was REM supported by the Cranberries and Radiohead. THRILLED I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY: again to see David Bowie I should have added a category MOST SURREAL. It would have been David Bowie at Nottingham Rock City - a 1,000 capacity standing-only club. OK, he was touring some shocking drums'n'bass music, but seeing Bowie from about 20 feet was just incredible. And, he was chatting about the previous evening's episode of Eastenders between songs.

BEST BETWEEN SONG BANTER: Has to be Dick Valentine from Electric 6, he just has a unique sense of humor and everyone i was with, even if they were not fans ended up enjoying the gig SURPRISINGLY GOOD: Pendulum (2008), they were great, the atmosphere was what struck me, the crowd were vibing off the whole experience even before they came on, not being a big drum and bass fan i was bowled over Electric 6 are definitely on my wish list. You've just moved them up the league. Although I don't own any Pendulum LPs, I think I'd enjoy them live. I'll keep my eyes open for them, but wouldn't travel too far / pay too much.

wow, great post! i fear that i have only been to a fraction of the number of gigs as most other people commenting in this thread, but i'll give this a go anyway... (i'm going to include classical concerts and performances as i've been to a few of those over the years too) FIRST: bluebird, sparta and hundred reasons (geneva, 2002) LATEST: beethoven's piano concertos, performed by freddy kempf and the bristol ensemble (colston hall, bristol, 2011) MOST: biffy clyro (3), muse (3) BEST in a BIG VENUE: muse at wembley stadium (2006), elbow at reading BEST in a SMALL VENUE: a performance of thomas tallis' 'spem in alium' in york minster chapter house (2009); sadly i can't remember the name of the choir but it was one of the most memorable musical performances i've ever heard BEST NOSTALGIA: i can't think of one that qualifies. but the stone roses this coming july probably will. BEST SUPPORT: ida maria, supporting guillemots (carling academy, oxford, 2008) SWEATIEST: hell is for heroes (cockpit, leeds, 2004/5) WORST: blood red shoes (carling academy, oxford, 2008?) - the lead singer had a strop halfway through the set and stormed off. she later came back and finished the set but she was gone for a good half an hour; it was pretty poor to be honest. WORST VALUE: biffy clyro, bristol 2010 - i can't remember how much the ticket cost but i ended up not going because i had to go to london that day! WORST SUPPORT: mystery jets, supporting the futureheads (leeds metropolitan uni, 2005). this was during their somewhat more leftfield days (i.e. when they were still awful). they've improved since then, thankfully MOST FAMOUS (in a good way): probably muse at wembley, it was the first big event held in the new stadium MOST FAMOUS (in a bad way): pleased to say i can't think of one which qualifies! MOST SCARY: hell is for heroes - i crowdsurfed TRIUMPHANT HOMECOMING: again i can't think of one which qualifies for this BEST BETWEEN SONG BANTER: elbow! also great for audience participation - they always get the crowd to help with 'grace under pressure' STRANGEST LINE-UP: probably bluebird supporting hundred reasons back in 2002. very weird. CREDIBILITY GIG: pixies at reading 2005. their first performance in the UK in ages, and i was there! SURPRISINGLY GOOD: sash! performed at a really random york uni event in 2007. i thought i'd grown out of his music but i found it surprisingly enjoyable BEST VENUE: fibbers in york - discovered a lot of great bands there also an honourable mention must go to york minster chapter house for hosting the best concert i've ever been to WORST VENUE: probably the first gig i went to, actually, in geneva. i can't remember the name of the venue but it was really small and claustrophobic. fibbers is even smaller but somehow they make it work. THRILLED I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY: ash played at my undergraduate graduation (2007)! total surprise and it didn't cost me a penny extra as i'd bought tickets for the graduation party brilliant. never expected i'd get to see them, especially not for free! also glad i went to see biffy clyro several times before they were 'famous' and now don't feel so bad if i have to miss out on seeing them again TOP OF MY WANT TO SEE LIST: arcade fire, m83, glasvegas, the decemberists. i would also love to go to a performance of pérotin, ideally in notre dame cathedral TOP OF MY WISH I'D SEEN LIST: at the moment, m83 - i had no idea at the time but they were in bristol recently and i've just fallen in love with their latest album. i also reaaallly wish i'd seen R.E.M. before they broke up. TOP OF MY WISH I WAS GIGGING AT A YOUNGER AGE: queen. also the smiths, dire straits, the stone roses, james, my bloody valentine - luckily i am going to see the stone roses this summer FANTASY GIG: i'd go back to the 80's, invite the smiths, queen and dire straits to a field in the middle of nowhere and have a mini-festival of awesomeness.

TOP OF MY WANT TO SEE LIST: arcade fire TOP OF MY WISH I WAS GIGGING AT A YOUNGER AGE: james Arcade Fire are second on my wish list. I actually had tickets for their Neon Fire tour, and had to sell them because I needed to be abroad. I fear I've missed them at their peak, and they'll either go stratospheric (into stadia) or disappear up their own ends. James are still touring. I finally caught up with them a couple of years ago, and had a great night out.

Electric 6 was only £10 aswel so great value for money, many people don't know they have 8 albums of great material.

a slightly incomplete response:
FIRST: Inspiral Carpets, Alexandra Palace, 1991
LATEST: Stephen Duffy and the Lilac Time,London South Bank, 2007 (yes that long ago...)
MOST: (err) Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine (4)
BEST in a BIG VENUE: the 25th of May, Hackney Downs festival, 1991
BEST in a SMALL VENUE: Mike Scott, Aberdeen Lemon Tree, 1997
BEST NOSTALGIA: Lilac Time, as above. So many greatest non-hits alongside the new stuff
BEST SUPPORT: Daisy Chainsaw (supporting PJ Harvey, London ULU, 1991)
SWEATIEST: Mike Peters, Glasgow King Tut's Wah Wah Hut, 1997
WORST: Hole, ULU, 1991. Playing a dire set is not made better by theatrically smashing up your instruments at the end
WORST, but saved by the support act: see above
WORST SUPPORT: The Senseless Things (supporting Carter USM, Brixton Academy). Just not very good.
MOST FAMOUS : a toss-up between Chas N Dave (Bloomsbury Theatre, 2006) and Joan Armatrading (outside Westminster Abbey, 1999)
MOST SCARY: Babyshambles, whatever the Town and Country Club was called by then, 2005 (?).Just a crush.
TRIUMPHANT HOMECOMING: now I think of it -( and I realise this invalidates my "most recent gig" above. But,huh,it was a day in the park, not a gig) Billy Bragg, followed by the Blockheads, Chalkwell Park, Southend-on-Sea, 2008.
BEST BETWEEN SONG BANTER: Chas N Dave -great stories, an appropriate amount of request-taking, and audience interaction
CREDIBILITY GIG: PJ Harvey, ULU, 1991 (secondarily, Therapy!, ULU, 1991)
SURPRISINGLY GOOD: Ride, Brixton Academy, 1992. Not that their music was bad (then), but it was somewhat introspective- great that it transferred so well to a live environment, with good light effects too
BEST VENUE: The late lamented Harlesden Mean Fiddler, London
WORST VENUE: The unlamented Astoria,London
TOP OF MY WISH I'D SEEN LIST: The Go-Betweens
TOP OF MY WISH I WAS GIGGING AT A YOUNGER AGE: The Jam, the Clash

I haven't been to a gig in nearly two years, thanks to work, so here goes:
FIRST: Adam Ant, can't remember where, probably the NEC, Birmingham, 1982
LATEST: Pipettes, Carling Academy, Birmingham, 2010
MOST: Pipettes, about 8 times
BEST in a BIG VENUE: other than Ant I've never been to one that holds over 1,500. Sigur Ros, perhaps, in the old Carling Academy in Birminghm
BEST in a SMALL VENUE: Pipettes
BEST NOSTALGIA: Clare Grogan in Brighton - told her daughter I loved her mum. She stared back at me. She was about 9 months old though
BEST SUPPORT: Hot Puppies, supporting Pipettes in 2006 - my GOD, Bec has a voice
SWEATIEST: Polysics, Brighton 2007 - people were fainting and they were throwing water everywhere
WORST: The Hat, Brighton 2007 - dull
WORST, but saved by the support act: n/a, not seen a bad headline act
WORST VALUE: n/a, never paid more than a tenner. Maybe Glasvegas, their set lasted about 40 minutes, but WHAT a 40 minutes (and a football-like atmosphere, I nearly launched into KRO)
WORST SUPPORT: The Hat (see above)
MOST FAMOUS: never been to a famous gig
MOST OPPORTUNISTIC: Peggy Sue & The Pirates, Brighton 2007 - during festival they did an acoustic half-an-hour set next door to where I was working...
MOST SCARY: the aforementioned Polysics one, cos of the fainting
TRIUMPHANT HOMECOMING: Pipettes at the Freebutt in Brighton in September 2007, very small and intimate venue
BEST BETWEEN SONG BANTER: Pipettes, passim - those girls should have had a sitcom. Auntie Gwen's Agony Advice, Becki's surreal trips into fantasy dance, Rosay's withering critique of obsessed fanboys - and perhaps a latent chart obsession; after I told her (to her surprise) they were number one in the indie charts she mentioned it in the gig
STRANGEST LINE-UP: Any with DJ Scotch Egg
CREDIBILITY GIG: Ting Tings, Birmingham 2008, four months before they hit the charts
SURPRISINGLY GOOD: Does It Offend You, Yeah? - can't remember where, I was only there for the support, but they were very engaging performers
BEST VENUE: Camden Roundhouse, interesting
WORST VENUE: anywhere that's difficult to get to, other than the Moseley Folk Festival, which WAS tricky, but still very nice
THRILLED I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY: hm, either Wedding Present touring "George Best" or Sigur Ros touring "( )", but really it was a Clare Grogan book-signing where she gave me a cuddle and admired my 12 inch
TOP OF MY WANT TO SEE LIST: Cults
TOP OF MY WISH I'D SEEN LIST: Schla La Las, Manhattan Love Suicides
TOP OF MY WISH I WAS GIGGING AT A YOUNGER AGE: Beatles, just for the cred; Sex Pistols, for the experience
FANTASY GIG: me and Clare Grogan in a hotel room
FURTHEST TRAVELLED FOR A GIG: to Paris in 2007 to see Pipettes

SURPRISINGLY GOOD: Ride, Brixton Academy, 1992. Not that their music was bad (then), but it was somewhat introspective- great that it transferred so well to a live environment, with good light effects too i can really imagine this! would have loved to have seen them.

wow super interesting thread but also very very difficult to compile!!!!!!!! gonna try... but I'll skip a few categories cos mostly I only see little acts that no one knows FIRST: cannot recall but must have been in Barcelona in the mid 90s some indie/britpop probably Cranberries or Radiohead LATEST: yesterday!!!!! went to see my adored Lisa Hannigan in Milano doing a secret show!!!!!!! and we got the whole package, we met her on her own in the afternoon, talked to her, got pics taken (even with our dog)!!!!, got CDs signed... then the show was in a little room like 100 people max, all sit down, we were front row, amazing, and we grabbed the setlist MOST: Tori Amos, think about 30 times!!!! then Damien Rice about 15 times!!!! Swell Season/Glen Hansard about 10 times BEST in a BIG VENUE: seeing Sigur Ros and Radiohead at the Werchter Festival... BEST in a SMALL VENUE: too hard to pick one... probably Damien Rice at the El Rey in LA in 2006 or when he played NASA in Reykjavyk in 2008... or The Tallest Man on Earth at Cafe de la Danse in Paris in 2010. BEST NOSTALGIA: flying to LA to see Tori Amos for the first time in 2001!! BEST SUPPORT: Damien Rice supporting Fiona Apple or the Swell Season supporting Damien Rice SWEATIEST: my early indie/Britpop gigs in the mid 90s like Radiohead at Zeleste in Barcelona WORST: cannot remember a worst or even a not-very-good... I was a bit disappointed with Ray Lamontagne maybe... WORST, but saved by the support act: Fiona Apple, un-watchable, so exagerated, doing a sorta theatrical performance that was all over the place. But the support was Damien Rice, first time seeing him so really worth it in the end WORST VALUE: some shows Ive bought tix for and then missed, cannot be worst value for Nerina Pallot, Iwas supposed to go to a gig in London and then it snowed and they cancelled my flight WORST SUPPORT: a guy called Mark Hole supporting Tori Amos last tour... MOST OPPORTUNISTIC: used to live in a little town in Belgium, where thety do one of the biggest rock festivlas in Europe, Werchter... saw many great bands (Sigur Ros, Bjork, Radiohead, KOL,...) MOST SCARY: seing Blur in a festival in the Pyrenees, almost got crushed cos everyone was jumping like crazy totally out of control BEST BETWEEN SONG BANTER: Damien Rice tells the funniest stories, I believe he spends more time writing those stories than writing songs SURPRISINGLY GOOD: Sufjan Stevens in his latest techno phase. I love old school Sufjan but his performace of the Age of Adz album was mind-blowing BEST VENUE: Hands down the CAFE DE LA DANSE in Paris, been a few times and it's a magic little place. WORST VENUE: remember this fantastic villa called Villa Arconati putside Milano, plagued with mosquitos!!! THRILLED I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY: to see Damien Rice playing with Lisa Hannigan a bunch of times before they split... TOP OF MY WANT TO SEE LIST: Nerina Pallot!!!!!! TOP OF MY WISH I'D SEEN LIST: Nirvana TOP OF MY WISH I WAS GIGGING AT A YOUNGER AGE: All About Eve FANTASY GIG:

Dammit, thought of another worst support:
Jus+ice, supporting CSS, just a couple of French blokes on stage playing computer games, there was no sense that they were doing anything at all other than fiddling with the light system, the whole thing could have been pre-recorded
