And, keen to show that she's game for anything, Karen shaved off her tumbling auburn hair for her latest role in 2014 Marvel movie Guardians Of The Galaxy.

Just check out the latest odds; although a number of bookmakers have stopped taking bets today. www.oddschecker.com/novelty/next-doctor-who/winnerPeter Capaldi is 55 years old ..... the same age as William Hartnell when he became the first Dr Who. Incidentally, Peter Capaldi's last role was in the 2013 movie World War Z as a World Health Organisation doctor.

Although I think he would be a great Doctor I can't see it happening unfortunately.

Although I think he would be a great Doctor I can't see it happening unfortunately. I agree. I suspect he's another agreed trojan horse to push up media interest on the future casting. Also he has previous with the Dr Who. He played the role of Roman Caecilius in S4E2 The Fires Of Pompeii; and played John Forbisher in Torchwood Series 3.

He played the role of Roman Caecilius in S4E2 The Fires Of Pompeii; and played John Forbisher in Torchwood Series 3. But Karen Gillan also appeared in that episode and she went on to be Dr Who's assistant, And in the original series Romana regenerated as Lalla Ward (briefly Mrs Tom Baker) who had already appeared as another character. I think Peter Capaldi would be a brilliant Doctor but, like others, I would be very surprised if he got it. If he played the role in the style of Malcolm Tucker...

Peter Capaldi would make a brilliant actor. And he was in World War Z as W.H.O. Doctor, I think the clue is in there.

New Doctor: The next Doctor Who lead actor to be unveiled this Sunday on BBC One By Christopher Hooton Thursday 1 Aug 2013 4:12 pm
The next Doctor Clara will be travelling with will be unveiled Sunday
The wait is almost over for Doctor Who fans, as the identity of the next actor to play the Doctor is to be revealed in a special one-off Doctor Who Live broadcast on BBC One this Sunday August 4 at 7pm.
In front of a live studio audience, host Zoe Ball will unveil and interview the 12th person to play the Time Lord, one of the most coveted roles in British television.
The half hour programme will feature Doctors old and new, companions, special guests and celebrity fans, all taking place against the backdrop of a swirling vortex with Daleks and the TARDIS stationed in the studio.
Earlier in the week the BBC disguised the show in the TV listings, scheduling a fake ‘Celebrity Mastermind’ in the 7.30pm-8pm slot.
Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor will end months of speculation over who will be taking over from Matt Smith, with Peter Capaldi, Ben Daniels, Ben Whishaw and David Harewood having all been linked with the role, though an unknown actor is perhaps far more likely.
Executive producer Steven Moffat said : ‘The decision is made and the time has come to reveal who’s taking over the TARDIS. For the last of the Time Lords, the clock is striking twelve.’
Moffat and Smith will both give interviews during the show, commenting on the role and what they believe it takes to play the Doctor.
Fans in America will be able to watch the unveiling live via simulcast on BBC America.
Charlotte Moore, Controller BBC One said : ‘BBC One is the home of big live events and this special live show is the perfect way to reveal the identity of the next Doctor and share it with the nation. The Doctor is a truly iconic role and I’m more than excited about the booking.’
Ben Stephenson, Controller of BBC Drama Commissioning meanwhile, revealed how they have been using the codename Houdini for the actor.
He said: ‘We can’t wait to unveil the next Doctor with everyone live on BBC1 on Sunday night. Amongst all the speculation and betting, there has been lots of fun and intrigue at work as we’ve been using the codename Houdini as a decoy! It’s the biggest secret in showbiz, even those working with the new Doctor on other projects at the moment have no idea they are in the presence of the 12th incarnation.’
Rory Kinnear had also been tipped as a possible Doctor, but after insisting that he won’t be joining the show his denial was compounded by his signing up to ITV drama Lucan, which films at the same time.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“The decision is made,” says Doctor Who Executive Producer Steven Moffat.
After weeks of speculation following the leaked news that Matt Smith would be stepping down as the Doctor, the BBC are preparing to name the new lead actor for Doctor Who, the twelfth to take the role in the 50-year-old series. The reveal will come live on BBC1 this Sunday night at 7pm in a special programme to be hosted by Zoe Ball. Originally disguised as the recording of a pilot show for a new series celebrating long-running shows, the BBC put out a call for Doctor Who fans to attend in costume.
In front of a studio audience, many of them Doctor Who fans who applied for tickets believing the show was a cover for an announcement, Ball will interview the actor cast in the role that the BBC have been code-naming “Houdini”. In the past day, The Thick of It actor Peter Capaldi (a long-standing Doctor Who fan himself) has suddenly become the bookmakers favourite due to a significant increase in betting on him. The 55-year-old Scottish actor would be the oldest of the modern Doctors, more in line with the age of First Doctor William Hartnell when he started in 1963.
Steven Moffat said: “The time has come to reveal who’s taking over the TARDIS. For the last of the Time Lords, the clock is striking twelve.” Moffat has recently said (at San Diego Comic Con) that the team were not ruling out older actors. Rumoured to have tested for the role alongside Capaldi are Michael Smiley and Game of Thrones‘ actor Richard Dormer. It is also possible the role has gone to someone not yet named in the media, although just about every eligible actor has been suggested in recent weeks.
Moffat and current Doctor Matt Smith will be interviewed on the live show, alongside former companions, celebrity guests and famous fans. Charlotte Moore, the new controller of BBC1 said: “BBC One is the home of live events and this special live show is the perfect way to introduce the identity of the next Doctor and share it with the nation. The Doctor is a truly iconic role and I’m more than excited about the booking.”
Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor airs at 7pm on BBC1 on Sunday 4 August and will be simulcast live on BBC America.

I thought this info was embargoed until midnight tonight; except Metro released the story early (and have since removed it again).
Anyway, the fact the BBC are doing this suggests the next Doctor is going to be familiar with a fair amount of people who watch TV for another role. (Based on today's mover in the next Dr Who odds that will be Miranda's love interest aka Mr Tamzin Outhwaite).

That's true, as it would have been a bit pointless having this same format with Matt Smith, as despite him having done a couple of well-thought-of shows, he wasn't exactly a household name and drew more of a "who?!" than "wow! when unveiled.

Someone has pointed out that it sounds like former bookies' favourite Ben Daniels doing the voiceover on that advert! Red herring, booby prize, inside joke or HUGE clue?

No Chris O'Dowd on there? Online last night, an 'insider' claimed it was him. Very odd if so...
