England were always going to win. It was just a matter of how many goals you'd score.
San Marino have only ever won one match since their 1990 debut, they have never won a competitive game and also have only scored 19 goals in all of them.
Here's San Marino's all-time record in all official internationals, the 1-0 loss to a Canadian Olympic team is not regarded as it was not official.
Played 116 Won 1 Drawn 3 Lost 112 Goals for 19 Goals against 490
They also hold the unwanted record for the biggest defeat in a UEFA administrated game, being a 13-0 loss to Germany in 2006 in Serravalle. Their ground only holds 7,000 and is called the Stadio Olympico, although the Olympics have never been in San Marino.

Who did they beat, and draw against?
You have to feel sorry for such teams, San Marino, Luxemburg, Lichtenstein Malta, Faroe Isles. I think a little league for them so that one goes into the main qualies would work well, they have competitive matches and some morale and form to take to bigger nations.

Turkey, Latvia and Liechtenstein being the draws in the official games. Only win in all matches was against Liechtenstein in 2004. San Marino have lost every match since being 51 after last night. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_San_Marino_national_football_team_resultsUEFA should do a preliminary round for all the lowest ranked teams using the UEFA National Team Co-Efficient or FIFA Ranking based on whatever FIFA told UEFA to use for the seeding. The bottom six are all randomly drawn in to three ties of two legs with the three winners advancing to the qualifying rounds proper. UEFA do this for the lowest ranked teams in their club competitions with four rounds of pre-qualifying in the Champions League, so why not for their internationals?. It's like putting Tre Penne and the other 75 teams that qualify for the Champions League, directly in the group stages with 16 uneven groups or whatever, scrapping qualifying altogether allowing the weaker UEFA affiliated league teams three points on a plate for many. The idea of qualifying rounds for those who don't go straight to the group stage, is for the teams to prove they're good enough for the group stages, seeing that their league is not strong enough. That way, they've earned the right to play Real Madrid, Barcelona etc. All San Marino have done is exist, then gain UEFA affiliation to play the heavyweights of European international football.

Taking that match from England's perspective I would say that was more of a warm up match and a poor performance overall, I know they scored 8 goals but overall it was like watching paint drying on the wall, Roy Hogdson should have played his best players not rested them, as they have a tough match against Montenegro, which they have to win now, as Montenegro scored a late goal last night.

Apart from South America (where there are only nine members) UEFA is the only confederation to have all teams entering at the same stage. I would prefer a format which allows for the final groups to be reduced to, say, five teams with the top two qualifying without play-offs. The European Championships would need a different format as there are now 23 qualifiers to be found.

A 0-0 draw in Bologna that was, when San Marino had yet to have any pitches in their microstate that passed FIFA regulation. It was the same qualifying cycle San Marino scored that infamous goal. The place is so small, only 16 or so teams exist there. San Marino Calcio play at the Stadio Olympico, but in Serie D/1 the third tier of Italian football. The rest all play in their domestic championship and don't have grounds of their own, the games just alternate between different pitches at random. Also, because there are not many teams from there, there is no relegation or promotion since 1996 or so. There used to be Serie A and Serie B, but decided to merge both together.

Oops, yes, I should have said ten members. The same principle applies though. There are too few members for there to be a preliminary round.

There is, it's the smallest confederation also and has the only continental tournament where there is no qualifying.
San Marino should have drawn with Poland away in 1992, but the only goal was a handball none of the officials spotted!.

Shame we didn't get double figures as those opportunities are rare, but i thought 8-0 was a decent enough result. Disagree with the performance, there was movement and willingness to run at San Marino both things that were lacking in the home game. Don't want to go over old ground about the Wembley game as discussed that at the time, but that game felt a bit flat being there. If we'd played like we did on Friday I probably would have come away feeling pleased, Young's long-ranger and Rooney's free-kick were fantastic finishes, even if i felt before Rooney hit it he might score. No problem in resting players imo, they'll be fresh for the big one on Tues and it gave other squad players the opportunity to impress. Don't consider it must-win, expected Montenegro to win on Friday and the home game is the more important one for me. We also haven't beaten them in the last 3 meetings. What we cannot do is lose it though.
