This is whizzing on quite quickly. Nothing much to stir the old vasblood, though. Only OMD, The Divinyls, The Lightning Seeds ("Sugar Coated Iceberg" is an absolute pop gem - an ice gem?) and bis - although "Eurodisco" was not anything like them at their best. Too many bandwagoners; Northside and The Mock Turtles for example would not have caused a second glance had it not been for the rise of baggy. Like whem Menswe@r got an album deal when they had precisely 6 songs written.

Bis have another song to come as of many if these acts, yes there are some bandwagon jumpers here but the madchester scene was my teenage era , so I want to include them they are low down the list , there is songs higher up you will like , I font want to do it too slow or u feel I will be copying RA who may have been planning something similiar one day but I want to include more vids and info, so may stop to 10 a day when we get to 900 and the quality improves in general.

Jane Child missed out on a US no. 1 hit in a very tight three-way battle between her, Lisa Stansfield and Tommy Page. In the end the last few reports gave it to Page. Who probably would not be recognized at a Page family reunion now. Helped no doubt by having NKOTB backing him.
Sophie B Hawkins came up with some good ones. "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover" is one of the best singles of a decreasing decade.

I always found Jane Child a bit of a contradiction. She looked quite punky - didn't she have a spiky mullet?? Back then at the start of the 90s she seemed to stand out. And yet she sang a perfect pop song! It took me a while to connect the face with the song. Great song, but don't recall it doing that well here unfortunately.

Jane child was played all the time on Atlantic 252 which was the only pop station I bould hear that summer on the Isle of Skye although we had the top 40 on radio 2 and radio Scotland played pop/indie after 9pm. But through the day it's all we had :/

900 blink-182 – Dammit
Early single just before their breakthrough album, this is from the album 'Dude Ranch' and introduced to me via MTV2 like many of these songs, back when it was not only the best music channel but probably my most watched channel overall!! 899 Compulsion – Mall Monarchy A punk band from the mid 90s, they were kind of too early for the punk pop revival and were breaking just as Brit Pop got huge but I see that most of the band went to bigger things after they split mostly in record company/producers capacity. 898 Goldie – Inner City Life Drum n bass is an under represented genre in this list, I actually love it but we only have room for one of the biggest names and hits of that type. 897 Fun Lovin' Criminals – Love Unlimited More too come higher up by this band, loved their debut album 'Come Find Yourself' but this Barry White influenced track was great too. 896 Buffalo Tom – I’m Allowed Introspective track from one of my favourite College rock bands from the US. If you are a fan of Kings Of Leon and want to here more stuff like them, Buffalo Tom are a great place to start especially this album 'Big Red Letter Day' 895 Whale – Hobo Humpin' Slobo Babe Next up a rock band from Sweden, this song has too be heard imagine Bjork singing with Nine Inch Nails and you are getting close but still not far enough out there. Steve Lamcaq used to play this all the time. 894 Tony Di Bart – The Real Thing
Wow this song sticks out a mile in this section, one hit wonder UK number one single, catchy dance pop which would fit in nicely into the current top 40, just needs a little remix to spice it up a little. The Sam Smith of 1994! 893 Space – Neighbourhood Little introduction needed for this Brit Pop classic, an acquired taste but so catchy 892 The Shamen – Boss Drum For most of the early 90s they were one of my top 5 favourite bands, shame they have dated so much. More to come later all the way through the list. 891 Rage Against The Machine – Sleep Now In The Fire
Another MTV2 song , This should be higher as it is more listenable than their bigger hits and a great message and video! They predicted the crash and all that went wrong back in 1999! Let those bankers burn hehe!!!

Playing catch up a bit....
Arrested development - love this song and everyday people or is it people everyday. Actually had the album but could never quite get into it.
Robert miles - stunning single also loved fable and one & one. Not sure if he did a follow up set of singles i always felt like he should have been around for longer than he was.
Eiffel 65 naff cheesy europap...right up my street!
Divinyls had this on cassette single not really something you can blast out though when you're a teenager living with your parents...
OMD love the beat of this song.
Jade oh god i bought their album it was total sh*t!
Freak power brilliant too
Some great tracks thorney!

Think the song was called 'People Everyday' but they sang 'Everyday People' , the best version of 'Mr Wendal' was this though

Quick catchup of my highlights
OUTSIDE THE THOUSAND Catherine Wheel - Black Metallic. Loved this. Deep and mystical: shoegaze with balls, really. Saw them live in 1991. Pity is this was their best song by far...
1000-991 Pet Shop Boys - Can You Forgive Her? : "Very" is probably my favourite PSB album - really on top of their game, perfect pop music. This isn't really my favourite track on the album - it works well as a first track, gets things going, but there is better on there that was never released as a single. Happy memories of my first year at Uni.
Tom Petty - Into The Great Wide Open. Although the lyrics are (or appear to be) autobiographical (at any rate about a rock musician...), they're more widely applicable. And this is great songwriting and performance.
Arrested Development - Mr Wendal. Very interesting and appealing act, would have liked them to have stuck around longer. "Tennessee" still the track of theirs I really rate, but this good too.
Nine Inch Nails - Closer. No holds barred, in a good way.
Blue Aeroplanes - Yr Own World. Probably their best track, but a group I liked but somehow never could quite get into. "...And Stones" another decent single from this time.
OMD - Sailing On The Seven Seas. Simple pop fun, a long way from their earlier best, but still worth a listen.
Youssou N'Dour & Neneh Cherry - 7 Seconds. Classy.
Pale Saints - Sight Of You. Underrated and overlooked act, but I think the more complicated melodies and subtle lyrics of most of the tracks of their 2nd album, "In Ribbons" beat this.
Pele - Raid The Palace. Oh yes! In retrospect rather facile/naive lyrically (and immeasurably more so that other contemporaneous tracks of this kind such as "Armchair Anarchist" by Kingmaker) , but this and, especially, "Fair Blows The Wind For France", were still really good examples of their genre.
Denim - Middle Of The Road. Perfection, almost.
Connells - '74, '75. Very MOR, very local commercial radio, but damn good.
Sophie B Hawkins - Right Beside You. A gifted artist, one who deserves to be better known. Many fine tracks from her....
Jane Child - Don't Wanna Fall In Love. Would possibly have been enormous released 5 or 6 years earlier than it was. And maybe should have been. Some fine twists and turns in it musically. But "You make the knife feel good"??
Looking forward to seeing whats ahead...

Could not STAND that American Green Day-type punk. Godawful pale imitation of the original. The only rockist genre that's worse is nu metal. I would never tire of stamping on Fred Durst.
The Whale video cannot pass without the immortal commentary from Beavis & Butthead.

I balanced Blink 182 with Compulsion mind, as they are British and certainly more influenced by real punk rock. Was never a fan of Beavis & Butthead but good clip

890 Moby – Go Moby's breakthrough hit, the original is still to come as well as some hits from 'Play' 889 Massive Attack – Teardrop This will be far too low for a certain member of the these forums but Liz has a song too come much higher up. Massive Attack also have more too come. 888 Jamiroquai – Emergency on Planet Earth My wife is a big Jamiroquai fan so a lot of it has rubbed of on me, he has a few tracks on this list. 887 Deftones – My Own Summer [Shove It]
They are just awesome aren't they, yes more MTV2 music I love it!! Their best of the 90s is still too come. Dont tar Deftones with the nu-metal brush they are/were so much better than that. Just brilliant modern heavy metal. 886 Ace of Base – The Sign
We all hoped they were the ABBA of the 90s but just two brilliant singles before they descended into mediocrity. Ok 'Life Is A Flower' was good as well. 885 Reef – Place Your Hands
Love or hate this band, this song filled a dance floor in my Student night DJ days and still is a huge crowd pleaser. It really has become bigger than the band. 884 Eric Matthews – Fanfare Introduced to me by 2 DJ mates who liked the more esoteric side of Brit Pop. This is a bit of a lost classic and a contender for a future Hidden Indie Treasures. I dont know much about him other than he was on Sub Pop. I read on Wikipedia that he had a brief comeback in the late 00s but nobody noticed. 8 83 The Divine Comedy – Becoming More Like Alfie
Speaking of esoteric Brit Pop so where The Divine Comedy until they suddenly became chart stars with this song among others. 882 Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark – Pandora's Box
The last great OMD single until their recent return to form in the last couple of years. This has possibly dated more than some of their 80s hits, never mind. 881 The Wannadies – Shorty It is often stated that Brit Pop wasnt a purely British sound, The Swedes I think were honourary members of the Brit club with this band and The Cardigans especially. They have lots of great singles one of which was my top song of 1994,on points anyway, and its not the one you think.

Reef wouldn't allow the video to be embedded but that spare the haters and the lovers know it anyway. I am away this weekend so ten more.
880 Bruce Springsteen – Streets Of Philadelphia
The 90s were quite quiet for Bruce and this is is only song on the list. From the film 'Philadelphia' of course.
879 Dario G – Sunchyme
Sampling the brilliant 'Life In A Northern Town' and still managed to be an incredible record without being a lame cash in. The sound of the Summer of 1997.
878 Tal Bachman – She's so High
Next entry in one hit wonder corner, oddly I thought he was European probably Scandinavian but turns out he was Canadian. A big MTV hit having featured in Charmed and the film 'Loser' alongside a certain Wheatus song. Think it was covered recently aww thats why it was Kurt Neilsen who covered it, thats where I got the Scando connection.
877 Propellerheads – Take California
Another big beat classic, no proper video available
876 Sonique – It Feels So Good
A UK number one and another song that would sound great in today's charts.
875 Manic Street Preachers – Stay Beautiful
Here we go!! This band could have had 30 entries on this list but I limit them, same issue with Blur,REM and some of my other favourites. It started with me from 'Motown Junk' and 'Generation Terrorists ' is still probably my 3rd favourite Manics album. And this is one of their best rock singles.
874 Cast – Alright
This isn't better than the previous song but you cant apply maths to music, this is Cast 3rd best against the Manic 12th best, its no competition. No vid either.
873 Nick Cave – Where The Wild Roses Grow
The classic video of this bunch. I wanted to love this more at the time as I loved the video but I just wasn't a Nick Cave fan, /me ducks from hipster thunder. I do like him a lot now and I give this song the dues it deserved at the time.
872 Lenny Kravitz – It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over
I prefer Lenny when he is giving it full Hendrix but this is a 90s radio classic. Still sounds great.
871 Jamiroquai – Space Cowboy
I warned you, here is another one!!

Youssou N'dour and Neneh Cherry Not heard this in a long long time, still sounds as good as it did back then
Santana and rob Thomas - Smooth, summer anthem
Snap Rhythm is a dancer would be in my top 10 of the decade!
Ace of base - bit bored of all that she wants after all these years. I see The Sign also makes an appearance, great track. Happy Nation was a good album i seem to recall them having considerable success in America which always strikes me as unusual for this type of music.
TLC Creep, brilliant...i must give CrazySexyCool another listen soon!

870 Manic Street Preachers – Australia
More Manics this time from their most commercially successful period. 869 Blues Traveler – Run-Around
Bit random this one not sure where I heard it first again probably MTV, this was a US top 10 in 1994 and they are still going I'm sure the last album was recently reviewed in Q. And as said on Youtube possibly 'the best harmonica solo ever' 868 Sneaker Pimps – Post-Modern Sleaze
The three hits of their debut album are all great but I favour '6 Underground' but this is still lovely too. 867 The Wonder Stuff – Circle Square
Last minute change, I realised I missed this one and it is better than 'Welcome To The Cheap Seats' no proper video but will include the baggy ,paranoia remix which was common in the Indie clubs then 866 Senser – Age Of Panic
Long forgotten by many, they were kind of the British Rage Against The Machine but were more industrial techno influenced, the video is a bit mouldy now though hehe 865 The Black Crowes – Remedy
Wow more blues, never a massive fan but they were always on my radar, this is one of their best 'original' moments. Without them we would have no Black Keys imo. 864 Natalie Imbruglia – Big Mistake The only big pop hit of this bunch and it is undisputed that Natalie Imbruglia was/is the most talented soap star turned pop star ever. And this less angry Alanis style track still sounds great. 863 INXS – Disappear
Just a coincidence but we now have Natalie's favourite band at this stage they were starting to lose their mojo a bit like U2 in the last 10 years. Their last great song. 862 The Heart Throbs – Hooligan
Signed to One Little Indian, one of my favourite indie bands of the late 80s who jumped onto the baggy bandwagon very well and this is probably my favourite song of theirs overall now. A vid because its obscure. 861 The Beautiful South – Don't Marry Her
Last song of this bunch and I realised that at the time I preferred Paul Heaton songs and now I prefer Jacqui Abbott songs, weird. Was never a fan of Dave Hemingway, found him a bit bland.

probably wasn't me you were thinking of but yes, 'teardrop' should be much much higher a good and suitably varied selection nonetheless. 'sunchyme' is one of my favourite dance tracks of a decade that produced many good ones. and i had forgotten quite how much i love 'big mistake'.

No it was Vastariner as he's the biggest Cocteau Twins fan here I think. But you have to remember this is over ten years so any song that makes this list is doing very well effectively a top 100 song of that year.

the last time i did an all-time chart, i think 'teardrop' finished in the top 10, but that was years ago now. it'd probably still have a fair stab at it, though. liz fraser has the most amazing singing voice of anyone, ever.

liz fraser has the most amazing singing voice of anyone, ever. Quoted for truth. I once did the "Teardrop" video for someone's actual pregnancy scans. She played it to her friends and later told me she'd never seen so many people crying in one room. Dawn French chose "Song To The Siren" for Desert Island Discs. Her current husband introduced her to it. "How can you not fall in love with someone who plays you that?" You wouldn't get anything like that with a f***ing Minogue. Except maybe from an audiophile. "Stop! For the love of all that is holy, make it STOP!!!!!" perhaps.
