860 Stereophonics – A Thousand Trees First appearance from The Stereophonics and taken from their debit album 'Word Gets Around'. One more from thsi record still too come. 859 The Corrs – I Never Loved You Anyway
Just wanted one song from The Corrs, so picked the one that first made me notice them and one that still had their original sound rather than being remixed to death like they eventually became. 858 The Offspring – Self Esteem
Before they became pop-punk in the late 90s, The Offspring were a very credible underground punk band as shown by this song. 857 Jane's Addiction – Classic Girl
Mellow moment from one of the best albums of the 90s 'Ritual De Lo Habitual', an album that sounds better now than ever apart from the overplayed monster hit that is still too come. 856 Madison Avenue – Don't Call Me Baby Just sneaking onto this list as I think it wasn't a hit until 2000 and became a UK number one but was around before that 855 The Warm Jets – Never Never
UK rock band formed from the remnants of Eat, a forgotten baggy rock band of the 90s who had a brilliant song called 'Shame' which is even better than this. Anyway Warm Jets had two top 40 hits would you believe with this and one other song higher up the list, they would have been 1 week wonders in the time of crazy fast charts though. 854 Jamiroquai – Deeper Underground
Really there is too much Jamiroquai down this part of the list although this is the best thing about Godzilla. 853 Savage Garden – To the Moon & Back
Another band I just wanted one song by and it was between this and their breakthrough hit 'I Want You'. This just edges it as it is a more of a classic and less dated. 852 Pulp – Party Hard
The most uptempo and David Bowie sounding track on 'This is Hardcore'. Pulp will have a lot of songs on this list. 851 Nirvana – All Apologies
Love both versions of this but I favour the MTV unplugged version so that is the video I will use

'Don't Call Me Baby' was a Top 40 hit in 1999 and a Number One in 2000, so it still counts. Well, apart from the fact that it's pony, of course, but it counts as a bad 90s single.

I think you've chosen one of the best corrs songs, i used to listen to a lot of their stuff in the 90s, but can't bear them now. Ditto for savage garden although i do still like Darren Hayes solo stuff.
Think i had dario g album but it felt like a bit of a one trick pony. Do still like the singles though really summery!

850 Everclear – Everything To Everyone
Never off MTV2 this band were much bigger in the US than the UK. They had 2 or 3 other decent singles as well. 849 Crowded House – Distant Sun No proper video for this , their last great single. 848 The Blue Aeroplanes – Jacket Hangs
Forgot how good this song was, they really were the British REM shame they never got proper big. 847 Bis – Kandy Pop
Tried to find their TOTP appearance as that was such a huge moment but no decent clips. An incredible event and shame they didn't do it more often. My 3 year old is singing this after hearing me play it a couple of weeks ago while compiling this list. He is still singing it the power of 'Kandy Pop' 846 Basement Jaxx – Where's Your Head At
Brilliant video and Basement Jaxx showed they could do Big Beat just as well as they did ever other type of dance music they touch. 845 Urusei Yatsura - Hello Tiger
No Spotify for this but I had to include them as they are one of my favourite alternative Scottish bands,. Them along with AC Acoustics and Idlewild flew the flag forScottish Indie Rock in the mid 90s. So last minute change here is 'Hello Tiger' 844 New Fast Automatic Daffodils – Fishes Eyes
Now some odd Madchester sounds from one of the more cult baggy acts of the early 90s. Feeeshhhhhhhheee!! 843 Frank Black – Men In Black Not a Will Smith cover!, this track is about the 'real' men in black, some great UFO conspiracies with the Pixies man. 842 The Dandy Warhols – Boys Better
I was a huge huge Dandy Warhols fan!!! I love them from their first single and didn't stop buying the albums until 2009. The only album I don't own a physical copy of is the last album from 2012. Just like the dirty sleaziness of their first 2 albums so much. 841 Beck – Where It's At
An even better song to finish, this song still sounds brilliant. I think it should be higher but there are plenty more from Beck higher up.

840 Björk – Violently Happy
It is very hard to put Bjork songs in order even just the ones of 'Debut' so really they are spread out all the way through the chart but the top one is my favourite now, in 6 months time it could be something else.
839 Aerosmith – Livin' On The Edge
At the start of the 90s my favourite three rock bands were Aerosmith, Guns n Roses and Faith No More. Of those three the one I still love is Faith No More, I can hardly listen to non 'Appeite For Destruction' Gunnroses and Aerosmith themselves seem more like a 80s band than a 90s band now, well they are really a 70s band say pedantic rock fan but anyway the point is I have tired of them a lot but hearing this now it is still good just doesn't move me anymore.
838 Menswear – Daydreamer
Yes I bought the hype and I should really have wiped them from history but I feel I need to remind everyone that they really were awful, why oh why did we love this hehe
837 Roxette – Joyride
From the ridiculous to even more ridiculous but at least they knew it or at least I hope they did.
836 U.S.U.R.A. – Open Your Mind
As you have already seen I am a sucker for 90s dance music both the credible and commercial. This is pure nonsense but I was swung by the 'Total Recall' sample which to this day is one of my top 10 films of all time.
835 Strangelove – Time For The Rest Of Your Life
After all that ridiculousness we finally have the sublime, kind of the middle ground between Echo & The Bunnymen and Suede. They had several brilliant singles and should have been huge.
834 Nalin & Kane – Beachball
When I DJed as well as doing indie nights, and my own club called Intergalactic, I also had to DJ Student Night. This usually meant playing really terrible pop music although not as bad as you would hear in the handbag joints but close. So we often tried to subvert it or play things a bit less cheesy. This was a great 10pm song just got the vibe warming up.
833 Moby – Hymn
While we are still in the mood we have the master of ambient pop
832 Geneva – Tranquillizer
Another lost Brit Pop band that showed such promise again they had many fine singles but this is probably the best.
831 Manic Street Preachers – Faster
Another brilliant single this time from 'The Holy Bible' I wish this was higher .

830 Bentley Rhythm Ace – Bentley's Gonna Sort You Out
More Big Beat this time BRA's finest moment with a suitably odd video. 829 Soundgarden – The Day I Tried To Live I was slow to get into Soundgarden one of my flat mates loved since the late 80s. I was a 'Black Hole Sun' convert I'm afraid but I went back and like all their stuff now. This thought is a 'Superunknown' single. 828 Aztec Camera – Good Morning Britain One of the oldest songs on the chart and it does feel like an eighties song but I had to include it as it is great. 827 Spiritualized – I Think I'm In Love No proper video but too good not to include, they were so much better like this before they turned into The Verve 826 Candyland – Bittermoon
I once heard a reviewer say on probably on Round Table that as EMF were to Jesus Jones, Candyland were to EMF. Doesn't that put shivers down your spine. I had all their singles and they were very popular in flat parties we had in the early 90s. Just found this incredible video which I never saw before, honestly never would have thought there label could afford a video like it. Candyland - Bitter Moon825 Pop Will Eat Itself – X, Y & Zee
Probably more loved for the late 80s grebo industrial sound they also made a decent go at going Madchester. PWEI at their most Happy Mondays. 824 New Order – Ruined In A Day Another video at MUZU good site for early 90s actually not this most imaginative New Order song in the world but great to still have them around, mostly I love this song if it wasn't for that fact that it reminds me of Jon Secada - Just Another Day which is just not right. New Order - Ruined In A Day823 Martika – MARTIKA'S KITCHEN
Wasn't Martika brilliant??!!'Toy Soldiers' was amazing but the Prince influenced 'Martikas Kitchen' was even better, this song is just so dirty hehe 822 Nine Inch Nails – Hurt Simply Beautiful 821 Dylan Rhymes – Naked and Ashamed
A shame playing anything else after that amazing song but here is some more Big Beat actually it is more like Break Beat and the best song The Chemical Brothers never did.

The 840s are the best decade so far. "Kandy Pop" was one of those memorable TOTP moments - shame that the Pops didn't stick out on a limb and put on other unsigned bands afterwards. I guess the industry didn't like their normal crap being shown up for being crap. bis signed up to Chemikal Underground, a label owned by The Delgados.

Bis were already on Chemikal Underground (but not on a long-term contract, which is why people calimed they were "unsigned"). They signed to Wiiija after TotP.

820 Chapterhouse – Mesmerise
Nice bit of shoegaze pop from one of the leading bands of the genre. This doesn't soar like them at their best but its pleasant enough. Also surprisingly fresh Vevo video for such an obscure track.
819 Blondie – Maria
Another UK number one haven't had one for a while, this is of course their shock comeback single which burned bright and they disappeared from the charts as quick as they reappeared.
818 Power of Dreams – 100 Ways To Kill a Love
One of my most played albums over the Summer of 1990 and one of the finest bands ever to come out on the Republic of Ireland.
817 Cracker – Teen Angst (What The World Needs Now)
Formed from the ashes of the brilliant Camper Van Beethoven, they did much better in UK with this incarnation and almost had a top 40 with the followup single which is still too come.
816 Senser – Switch
No video for this more of the same as the earlier track
815 The Popinjays – Monster Mouth
Often forgotten but so many great bands were signed to One Little Indian including this band. This is their radio hit , Mark Goodier played it all the time, which I so hoped would crossover but wasn't to be.
814 Living Colour – Love Rears It's Ugly Head
I do actually prefer the Soulpower remix but I think the original tells the story better. There had always been black singers in rock like Jimi Hendrix or Prince but this was a whole band and they were heavy, not so much this song but 'Cult Of Personality' was so alien to anything I had heard black musicians do up to this point, guess I was a little naive but they really opened the door I think.
813 The Levellers - Far From Home
Another last minute change it was going to be 'It's A Beautiful Day' but then I noticed I didnt have the first song I liked and loved by them and IABD is very overplayed. I still think I am really underplaying how much I like them at the time, its that damn revisionism again.
812 Jellyfish – The King Is Half-Undressed
One of the oddest Alternative bands to come out of the US in the early 90s, they really were not like anyone else and this their biggest hit is arguably their finest moment although 'Babys Coming back' was good fun also.
811 Magnapop – Slowly, Slowly
When this song came out I was into bands like Sugar and The Lemonheads and this was like a female fronted Husker Du or a straighter Pixies. I think they had a lot of good songs but I didn't hear them at the time , this was the only one I bought on 12" single.

810 Xpansions – Move Your Body
Now some classic old skool house, one of the best of its kind. 809 Deep Blue Something – Breakfast At Tiffany's
Everyone knows this song one of the biggest radio hits of the 90s, I guess it is a bit Heart FM now but it is still a very good soft rock pop song. 808 Apollo 440 – Krupa You are never more than 20 songs away from another big beat song in this area of my list, just so many good tracks thsi band had. 807 Juliana Hatfield – Universal Heart-Beat One of my 90s crushes, just loved her voice so much. Her tracks with The Blake Babies and The Julianna Hatfield Three as well as her collaborations with Evan Dando were her best stuff but this first solo single was very good as well. 806 Manic Street Preachers – Kevin Carter
Another 'Everything Must Go' single and a Haven favourite I think. 805 R.E.M. – Near Wild Heaven
First entry from 'Out Of Time' on the list, I actually preferred a lot of the album tracks to the singles on this album especially 'Texarkana' 804 Crazy Town – Butterfly
Probably the most controversial track in this bunch, I love the Red Hot Chili Peppers and I don't mind that they rip them off as they created something almost as good. Strongest form of flattery and all that. bet Vast hates this a lot!! 803 Concrete Blonde – Joey
I must admit I know very little about this band. My wifes flatmate when she was at Uni played this album all the time and this song became a bit of a soundtrack as it where. From what I can gather they were kind of nu-wave prog rock if there is such a thing a bit of an oxymoron I guess. 802 Ben Folds Five – Battle of Who Could Care Less
I cant believe that I almost missed this off the list, they have more to come later will save the main comments for higher up. 801 Faith No More – Easy
Now to take us up to the Top 800 one of the best cover versions ever, so much so that you cant sing this song without going OOOHHoooghHHH!!!! in the style of FNM

Savage Garden - To The Moon And Back. Their best single, certainly. Quite lovely. Some clever and sensitive lyrics, "Her friends should be tried for treason". Really nice.
Crowded House - Distant Sun. Very superior songwriting.
New FADS. Aha! The track of theirs I really recall is "Big" (which I am still quite fond of). This must be the first time I've heard "Fishes Eyes" for over 20 years, I think. Like the groove, at least. Grey, urban, rainy, northern, understated menace.
PWEI - X, Y and Zee. The poppies worked surprisingly well when they were being as poppy as here. I'd never been won over to them as a grebo band, but a more commercial approach, unusually, served them well. I think "Get The Girl Kill The Baddies" or "Wise Up! Sucker" were probably my absolute favourites, but I like the way this one lopes around a bit.
New Order - Ruined In A Day. Conversely, I really didn't appreciate the way their music was watered down/popped up once they'd signed to London/FFRR records. So I do like this track's subtlety - at least to my mind the best of their singles from that period. But still not a patch on their 80s best...
Martika - Come on and get some...
Chapterhouse - generally I couldn't stand them (marginally better than early Verve, who were in a similar vein, though.). Slowdive (and obviously early Spiritualized: MBV go without saying) were more my sort of shoedive. Chapterhouse seemed a bit too introspective, a bit too smug (for all that both of these things tended to go with the genre). I think was the track of theirs I found most tolerable, but only barely so...
Popinjays - Had their moments (though I think I sometimes get them mixed up with The Heart Throbs). "Vote Elvis" is the track of theirs I really recall..
Living Color - Crossed and combined genres and styles like no-one else. A really versatile talented group. "Love Rears Its Ugly Head" is very good indeed, and by no means their only track that is.
Xpansions - Another classic from the opening months of legalized Kiss FM in London. Very welcome inclusion here.
Juliana Hatfield - yeah, kind of a crush of mine. But too wet, really, and too limited an emotional and lyrical range. (Well, of what I've heard, anyway, which is mostly the Juliana Hatfield Three songs.)
REM - Near Wild Heaven. Gorgeous.

Loved Chapterhouse. Their "Pearl" with Rachel Goswell is one of the musical highlights of the 20th century.
Popinjays...produced by Ian Broudie. "Monster Mouth" and "Vote Elvis" at least ought to have been monster hits. Great band name.
Concrete Blonde...got their name from Michael Stipe and even he had no idea what it meant. Lead singer was Johnette Napolitano.
"Near Wild Heaven" was REM at their poppy best. Tremendous.
FNM's "Easy"...one of the absolute worst records ever made. There is nothing positive I can say about it. It was made for the most disgraceful of motives, i.e. solely to make money. Cover versions can be good if they take a song in new and unexpected directions (to link to the thread, Slowdive's "Some Velvet Morning" for an example). But if you're going to do a near note for note copy, why not just release the original and save the studio costs? FNM did a lot of good stuff, but this travesty dropped them well down in my estimation.

'Pearl' expect to see very very high in the chart as for Faith No More I don't believe it was a money making scheme a band if their type that had survived through grunge did not need to be that cynical and money grabbing , I just believed he wanted to show that he could really sing and he loved the song and watching it with the video retains their sleazy humour but yeh I don't normally like straight covers either

a very eclectic mix!
out of all the ones since i last commented (everything on this page, in other words) my favourites are stereophonics, basement jaxx, the corrs (*ahem*) and of course the mighty 'distant sun', the best song on my favourite album by one of my favourite bands.

800 U2 – Lemon Promo only single from the Zooropa album and I think its one of the best tracks they did in the 90s. They should use this as the template for their next album think it would work well in 2014. 799 Mega City Four – Stop
Another underrated band from the period before Brit Pop, they had lots of great singles that all sounded a bit like this really. 798 The High Llamas – Checking In, Checking Out Fronted by the ex singer of brilliant Irish indie band Microdisney, Sean O'Hagan. This came of a brilliant album 'Gideon Gaye' that sounds like a lost 60s record again they were introduced to me from the same guys who introduced me to Ben Folds Five. 797 The Soup Dragons – Mother Universe More baggy chancers, Soup Dragons were a ok band that were going nowhere and they made the leap pretty well. 796 Daft Punk – Around The World
Will start by saying this is way way way too low from one of my top 20 albums of the 90s. Rest assured their remaining single will make up for this shortfall. Another classic video. 795 Thousand Yard Stare – Comeuppance I could choose three different songs for Thousand Yard Stare, the baggy 'Buttermouth' or the indie jangle of 'O-O AET' but will change my entry to the epic 'Comeuppance'. I saw this band support James in 1992 and they were brilliant, shame they didn't last much longer. 794 Scarlet – Independent Love Song Haven't had a pure pop song like this for a while, sadly they are the kind of act that these days would be snapped up for some reality show and not manage to break using their own talent. I wish writing a brilliant song was all it took these days as well. 793 Rage Against The Machine – Bullet In The Head
Oh dear this didn't go well after the last song. Don't feel much like saying anything other than it's the song a bit like 'Killing In The Name' but not as good hehe 792 Morrissey – The Last of the Famous International Playboys
First appearance for Morrissey in my 90s list, and I must admit I prefer his 80s and 00s singles but I have included two of his best 90s tracks as he has to be here doesn't he? 791 Aerosmith – CryinAnother last minute change, torn between Pump single 'The Other Side' and this track from 'Get A Grip' but that Alicia Silverstone video swung it rather look at her than just watch a band performance And will go to 5 at a time after this to save rubbish computers hehe

790 The Real People – Window Pane Read a recent interview with Noel Gallagher where he was saying that they could have formed Oasis sooner but they would have been lost in the baggy/Madchester signing frenzy and end up in a bargain bin. A perfect example of this are The Real People, they were too good to get lost in the crowd but they did and although they did reappear through the next twenty years to less and less success. Just noticed that The Real People actually helped Oasis get their 1st break as well, so there you go. 789 RUN-DMC – It's Like That
The song has very bad memories for me and reminds me of one of the worst supervisors I ever had, otherwise this would be higher. 'b****!' as Jesse would say 788 Kula Shaker – Grateful When You're Dead / Jerry Was There Their first single before the world decided you shouldn't like them. Well I am not ashamed I loved 'K' so kill me, let the haters hate!! 787 Propellerheads – Bang On ! Its that time again more Big Beat!! Sorry I just love this stuff. 786 Underworld – Push Upstairs As we getting higher up the list we will see more and more of the 90s dance overlords from the mighty triumvirate of Underworld, Chemicals Brothers and The Prodigy. I don't know why but I don't think there is any Orbital which is a shame. 785 Stereolab – Miss Modular
Indie hipster pleasing time, first entry from Stereolab who have 3 songs on the list.

Lost my post last night so starting again 784 Saint Etienne – Hug My Soul
First appearance from an act that has a very good chance of topping the whole list. 783 The Offspring – Come Out and Play
This should be the highest Offspring song as its the best but I am worried that 'Pretty Fly' is till too come 782 Lenny Kravitz – Fly Away Lenny Kravitz only UK number one and its a pointless answer. Name a number one from the nineties and you will score 0 for this. The charts were so fast in this period that hardly anyone but chart fans knew this song did so well. Anyway here's the vid. 781 Kingmaker – Ten Years Asleep
Last appearance for this band with The very Wonderstuff 'Ten Years Asleep' 780 Finley Quaye – Sunday Shining quick update last entry for this singer wish he stayed this good

779 Echo And The Bunnymen – Nothing Lasts Forever
The 90s comeback wasn't disappointing but it was a shame that they really just sounded like The Verve and were missing a lot of what made them special in the 80s. This is the best of the bunch. 778 The Human League – One Man In My HeartAn awful lot of people are not aware of the brilliant mid 90s return of Human League, this track and the lead single' Tell Me When' were as fine as anything they did in the eighties. Shame that this era was so forgotten. 777 Midway Still – I Won't Try
Quite an obscurity this band, I knew them from 'Indie Top 20 Vol 13' arguably the best of all those compilations. Playing it now it is very similar to early Biffy Clyro 776 Jennifer Paige – Crush
Now more pure pop from one of the most beautiful one hit wonders ever. I just had to stop what I was doing do watch thsi vid whenever it came on hehe. It is just standard US soul-pop but she just makes the song so captivating 775 Living Colour – Cult of Personality Now this is the song that really shook things up, one of the most powerful rock songs of the early 90s. They just showed everyone if you want to do something just do it , ignore all stereotypes!! 774 Third Eye Blind – Semi-Charmed Life
Playing this now it is basically Hanson but ok to like. There was so much music like this in the late 90s. 773 The Smashing Pumpkins – Ava Adore
Is this the first appearance from my favourite rock band of the mid 90s. It is funny watching these videos twenty years later, he almost feel like Beavis & Butthead. " Who you think he is Uncles fester fnnar hehehrrhre!!" But anyway not one of their best but far from their worst. 772 Pavement – Range Life
Through most of the 90s my experience of Pavement were they were one of the bands that The Chart Show always fast forwarded past because they couldnt afford to make videos and it was only really geeky, yes more geeky than me, indie fans that liked them. But I bought 'Crooked Rain Crooked Rain' at the time 1994 on the basis of the Grunge slating 'Cut Your Hair'. This was the most laidback of the singles, the others will be much higher. 771 Björk – Play Dead At the peak of her career, Bjork released this brilliant one off single with Dave Arnold which still sounds fresher than most of her more dance based hits at that time. Think she should have done more like this but maybe its uniqueness is why it is so special. 770 Betty Boo – Where Are You Baby?
I wasn't a fan of many of the singers that featured in early British house tracks like Yazz or Lisa Stansfield but I loved Betty Boo. It is debatable but I think this is her finest solo moment. The 12" version is especially good.
