Barry Hawkins, oh dear... Didn't stay up to watch it but noticed it was 5-5 without realising he had been up 5-0! Bond is a name from the past.

Bond is a name from the past. Very much so - Crucible runner-up in 1995, at the height of Hendry's dominance. Once as high as #5 in the world. Although he doesn't really challenge for titles anymore, he's maintained a high standard for a long time, remaining in the top 32 until three or four years ago. Just realised the session times I put up were European time, so it's 1pm and 7pm UK time.

We're down to just two tables now so all games are being shown live somewhere.
Ding's defeat to James Cahill last night (world #100) means Neil Robertson is guaranteed to end the tournament as world #1 if he beats Graeme Dott.

Interesting to see that O'Sullivan was happy with the tables in the last round having been highly critical after the previous round. The organisers seem to have responded to criticism in a more positive way than their usual habit of sticking their fingers in their ears and chanting "La la la, can't hear you".

To be fair, re-clothing the tables during a tournament is quite commonplace and has happened several times in recent years when there's been criticism from players.
That said, the sport as a whole seems much more dynamic under Barry Hearn than it was under the previous regime.

I haven't bothered watching any of the UK Championship for one simple reason. I don't like short matches. Hearn said he wouldn't change the format of the major tournaments. He lied.

This is true - it is a shame the UK Championship lost its best of 17 format from the very beginning and it would be nice to see more tournaments other than the Worlds with multi-session matches. However, at least the UK Championship retains some form of unique identity by being the only ranking tournament that has a 128-player field at the venue.

Thursday's results: Matthew Selt 0-6 Ronnie O'Sullivan (147 by Ronnie in final frame) Judd Trump 6-3 Rod Lawler Shaun Murphy 5-6 Marco Fu Stephen Maguire 6-3 David Morris
Quarter-finals: Graeme Dott v Stuart Bingham Anthony McGill v Ronnie O'Sullivan Mark Davis v Judd Trump Marco Fu v Stephen Maguire
After very few shocks to start with, Ronnie is now the only top 8 player left in the tournament. If Ronnie beats McGill, he'll have reached the semi-finals without facing a player ranked in the top 32. If Dott beats Bingham, Ronnie could reach the final without facing a top 16 player (Dott is ranked 17) and Mark Davis (#19) is still in the other half of the draw.

Annoyingly, I didn't see it live as I'd switched over for the Big Bang Theory but I saw it later on - another fantastic break from Ronnie.
