Speaking of the draw, i'm sure I heard Colin Murray say on his Talksport show this week that the draw will be done on his show next Monday morning. Then made some comment about it being the first time that stage of the draw has been made by humans...or something. Odd thing to say but I know what he was getting at. Interesting, so who did it in the 1890s? I'm assuming what he meant was we're used to seeing it for the first time in print and that this will be the first time the 4th qualifying round draw will be done on TV or radio live. For some reason I thought it had been done by either TV or radio before, so that assumption could be wrong!

Having just done a quick double-check, Talksport did do it for the same stage last year in the morning (on Colin Murray's show, think I read about it being done on there before) so I've got no idea what he was talking about No idea what time it will be on, but if I can I might try and listen to that.

I think Murray's comment was a reference to the lifeless, stuffy style of draw that was done until the late 90s with three FA officials (such as personality vacuum Graham Kelly or Bert Millichip) though I'm (only slightly) surprised he doesn't remember the final qualifying round draw being on his show last year. Having said that, there was a certain charm about the way they just got on with it in the old days, rather than having the inane chit-chat throughout the modern day draws.
After Kelly moved on, David Davies took over hosting duties, though he was just another FA suit but had the rare quality of not being a zombie. Things went downhill with Trevor Brooking because the draw would take twice as long due to him being deaf and having to ask for EVERY SINGLE NUMBER to be repeated.
Since then, it's been the solid, sterile sports presenter approach, usually with former players carrying out the draw at Wembley and to be honest, I don't think TV has ever really managed to find a formula that works.

It's just a draw so why try and dress it up as anything else? Just draw the teams (preferably out of the old-fashioned velvet bag) and be done with it. The first round draw has been given a 30 minute programme. If they do that for all rounds, what are they going to do with the other 29 1/2 minutes for the semi-final draw?

The first round draw can take about 15 minutes anyway as there's 80 balls to pick out of the bag - the most of any of the "proper" stages.

It is just a draw, but when you follow a small team, it is what you look forward to, to see who you have got and whether you pull a plum draw in Round 3. Every time a non league team comes out at home, we sit here going "no, no, no, phew!"

I remember sitting in my car a year ago for the final qualifying round, waiting to see who Marske were going to face and being more nervous than for any cup draw in my life. It was also very surreal hearing a friend of mine as part of an audio package set to music with fans of smaller teams explaining what it meant to their club.

I seriously doubt they will beyond the 3rd round.

There was a write-up on the BBC Sport website in which Shildon got a mention for holding Stourbridge to a draw. Two sides from the ninth tier/level 5, Greenwich Borough and Willand Rovers, reached the sixth round fourth qualifying round.

That's actually one less than last year, when Marske United, Hartley Wintney and Brislington all reached this stage and lost (although Shildon can still make it three). I think Shortwood United were the lowest-ranked team to reach the 1st round last season.

I thought about going to watch Kiddy play, but the 3 hour drive there and back is putting me off for now, went to watch Wrexham v Hyde at the same time last season.

I think it was just a case of me talking rubbish, probably through mishearing. Having heard the draw this morning he said it was the first time that fans had done the draw. Last year I think he did the draw himself. The ties that interest me: Norton United v Shildon/Stourbridge (if Shildon win their replay) Dartford v Burgess Hill Town Maidstone United v Welling United Willand Rovers v Maidenhead United/Gosport Borough (if Maidenhead win their replay) Eastbourne Borough v Dover Athletic Evesham United v Grays Athletic/Bromley (if Bromley win their replay)
