The first of several entries for Delays, Sigur Rós, Travis, Radiohead and Ash, while Jack White makes his second appearance...
441 Long Time Coming Delays (2004) 442 Glósóli Sigur Rós (2005) 443 Something Anything Travis (2008) 444 KC Accidental Broken Social Scene (2003) 445 Mr Understanding Pete & the Pirates (2008) 446 Knives Out Radiohead (2001) 447 Silent Sigh Badly Drawn Boy (2002) 448 Steady, As She Goes The Raconteurs (2006) 449 Sometimes Ash (2001) 450 Chase The Sun Planet Funk (2001)
#442. Sigur Rós - Glósóli (2005)
A gorgeous and, I think, underrated single by what may be the only artist whose music I ever discover thanks to a TV advert promoting their album. The ad used the opening bars of Glósóli and left me with the feeling that if any band could make me conjure up vivid mental images of Iceland without my knowing anything about the place, they were probably worth investigating. Takk... is, of course, best known for another single which will appear in this list later on, but I still have a soft spot for this one.

"Glosoli" is pretty close to being the greatest song ever. Not just for the 2ks. It certainly has the best synthesis of sound and vision for a video.

A few one-hit-wonders in this set, albeit including two acts whose members will appear later on in other guises...
431 Assessment The Beta Band (2004) 432 Area The Futureheads (2005) 433 Rubber Lover Marmaduke Duke (2009) 434 Movies Alien Ant Farm (2001) 435 House Of Jealous Lovers The Rapture (2002) 436 In Demand Texas (2000) 437 Clint Eastwood Gorillaz (2001) 438 First Of The Gang To Die Morrissey (2004) 439 Hey There Delilah Plain White T's (2006) 440 Gimme Sympathy Metric (2009)
#431. The Beta Band - Assessment (2004)
The only entry from The Beta Band, and sadly the penultimate single they released before disbanding. I was considering nominating it in the Scottish Music Celebration thread, but decided it was probably too obscure - although it reached #31 at the time. Nevertheless, I couldn't pass up an opportunity to share the brilliant pan-cultural historical relay-themed video, so here you go...

A few more...
421 Hitten Those Dancing Days (2008) 422 Nothing A (2002) 423 Nehemiah Hope of the States (2004) 424 Juxtapozed With U Super Furry Animals (2001) 425 You Will You Won't The Zutons (2004) 426 Overload Sugababes (2000) 427 Milkshake Kelis (2003) 428 So Says I The Shins (2006) 429 Porcelain Moby (2000) 430 The Zephyr Song Red Hot Chili Peppers (2002)
#424. Super Furry Animals - Juxtapozed With U (2001)
This came out when I was about 13 or 14, and I couldn't stand it at the time. It's gradually wormed its way into my affections, although I still think SFA's best days were probably in the 90s - this is as high as they've made it in this chart.
Elsewhere, A and Hope Of The States bow out, plus lone entries for Kelis, The Shins, Moby, The Zutons (kind of) and inaugural Havenvision champions, Those Dancing Days.
to be continued tomorrow at a more sociable hour...

Just when I feared this was going to be so overwhelmingly indie/rock that I'd lose interest, in come great singles by Sugababes, Kelis and Moby. They probably just about compensate for the inclusion of the execrable Plain White Ts.

ha! I'm glad it's not all awful I will freely admit that I spent most of this decade as an indie/rock snob and only really started to emerge from that after I went to uni in the mid-00s - that's inevitably going to be reflected to some extent here although my tastes have broadened considerably since then.

Another group of mostly one-song wonders, although we'll be seeing three of these again...
411 Another Chance Roger Sanchez (2001) 412 Romantic Rights Death From Above 1979 (2004) 413 She's Got You High Mumm-Ra (2006) 414 Sewn The Feeling (2006) 415 Golden Age TV On The Radio (2008) 416 Big Sur The Thrills (2003) 417 Oh, MJ! The Little Ones (2007) 418 Fidelity Regina Spektor (2006) 419 That Great Love Sound The Raveonettes (2003) 420 This Picture Placebo (2003)
#411. Roger Sanchez - Another Chance (2001)
A great dance track - one of a handful in this list - from the early 00s. Even as a mostly-indie-listening teenager, this song managed to make an impression on me to the point that it was one of the first singles I ever bought. Great video, too - unfortunately there isn't a decent-quality upload of the radio edit version on YouTube, but it is on Vimeo.

'Another Chance' is one of the best dance tracks of the 00s but mostly due to the greatness of Toto and that "Doosh Doosh" at 1:15, just gets me everytime.

421 Hitten Those Dancing Days (2008) - A song I pretty much forgot about but at the time was on regular rotation on my ipod 422 Nothing A (2002) - classic, hoping to see another A song a bit higher up
424 Juxtapozed With U Super Furry Animals (2001) - Not my fave SFA track, (Drawing) Rings Around the World, Golden Retriever and Run Away stand out from that decade but all 4 would be in my top 1000
425 You Will You Won't The Zutons (2004) - Think I own all of their albums, think I overplayed it and enjoy other Zutons tracks more these days
429 Porcelain Moby (2000) - classic Moby, Play had so many good songs, in fact I think it is the album with most singles released from it?

I saw TV On The Radio supporting Franz Ferdinand, and was bewildered about all the attention they were getting at the time. They didn't seem to have any songs, personality or originality.
"Another Chance" was one of the few CD singles I bought. Still has the ability to raise my heartbeat; sublime.

Rounding off the bottom fifth of the list, with first entries from Hell Is For Heroes, The View, Blood Red Shoes, Franz Ferdinand, Modest Mouse and the most over-represented artist...
401 Same Jeans The View (2007) 402 Only One Word Comes To Mind Biffy Clyro (2005) 403 Unwell Matchbox Twenty (2003) 404 You Drove Me To It Hell Is For Heroes (2002) 405 The Widow The Mars Volta (2005) 406 You Bring Me Down Blood Red Shoes (2006) 407 Say Hello Deep Dish (2005) 408 Jacqueline Franz Ferdinand (2004) 409 Lady (Hear Me Tonight) Modjo (2000) 410 Dashboard Modest Mouse (2007)
#402. Biffy Clyro - Only One Word Comes To Mind (2005)
As mentioned in earlier posts, I eventually settled on a limit of 10 entries per artist in this list, which feels (and probably is) pretty self-indulgent. The single reason for this is Biffy Clyro - one of my favourite artists, a band I've seen perform more times than any other, and who also happen to have released five albums and 21 singles across the decade. Hacking down their 00s back catalogue to 10 singles was difficult enough (bad luck 'The Ideal Height', 'My Recovery Injection', '27'...), and their much-maligned third album, Infinity Land, almost missed out altogether. In the end, though, this one snuck in. It's never been their most popular single but all I can say is when I bought the album, this was the song that I found myself coming back to again and again. I did say it would be controversial...

I have 8 Biffy Clyro tracks in my top 500 and 13 in the whole list but that may still go up or down, this was the last song I cut off my shortlist but it may still get back in.

Sorry for the delay - yesterday was pretty busy. Still, it's good to see all the love for Another Chance! As for TV On The Radio, I don't know if I'd particularly enjoy seeing them live, but Dear Science is a great album. I actually bought it on the strength of 'Halfway Home' which I wanted to include in this list, but which (as I discovered later) wasn't actually released as a single. I don't know how they come across live, but on record, I find the way they combine indie with electronica and hip-hop pretty inspired. 422 Nothing A (2002) - classic, hoping to see another A song a bit higher up
429 Porcelain Moby (2000) - classic Moby, Play had so many good songs, in fact I think it is the album with most singles released from it?
that's it for A in my list I wonder which song you were thinking of - the only other one I had in contention was 'Starbucks' which didn't quite make the final cut but which would definitely be in my top 1000.
I believe you're right about Play as well - again only 'Porcelain' made my list but I did strongly consider 'Natural Blues' as well.

Into the top 400 (still a loooong way to go...): The Automatic squeeze in with their highest entry, The Coral get off the mark, and The Zutons put in a second appearance courtesy of Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse...
391 This Is The Life Amy Macdonald (2007) 392 Suzie Boy Kill Boy (2005) 393 Strange & Beautiful (I'll Put A Spell On You) Aqualung (2002) 394 Pass It On The Coral (2003) 395 Valentine Delays (2006) 396 In For The Kill La Roux (2008) 397 Here It Goes Again OK Go (2006) 398 Valerie Mark Ronson ft. Amy Winehouse (2007) 399 She's Attracted To Young Knives (2006) 400 Recover The Automatic (2005)
#398. Mark Ronson ft. Amy Winehouse - Valerie (2007)
A few songs I'd like to talk about here - Amy Macdonald and Aqualung in particular - but had to highlight this one in the end. It's one of only a handful of cover versions in this list: I don't really enjoy cover versions of songs I already know, with a few exceptions. But occasionally a cover version is so successful that it actually makes you forget that it's not the original. Mark Ronson's 2006 album of covers, Version, didn't get off to a great start with me - the butchery of 'Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before' put me off pretty decisively - until this came along. Even then it took me a while to warm to it but I love it now. The phrase '...made the song their own' is overused but I really think it applies to Amy Winehouse and Valerie - sorry, Zutons...

Lots of indie, including an underrated Travis single, plus Beyoncé, who makes the first of her three appearances...
381 Animal R.E.M. (2004) 382 Fake Tales of San Francisco Arctic Monkeys (2006) 383 Adventure Be Your Own Pet (2006) 384 Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1 The Flaming Lips (2003) 385 Crazy In Love Beyoncé ft. Jay-Z (2003) 386 Don't Look Back Into The Sun The Libertines (2003) 387 Re-Offender Travis (2003) 388 Watching Xanadu Mull Historical Society (2002) 389 Love Me Like You The Magic Numbers (2005) 390 Date With The Night Yeah Yeah Yeahs (2003)
#383. Be Your Own Pet - Adventure (2006)
There's a lot I could say about some of these entries but several of these artists have songs coming up which are worth mentioning. Instead, I present a great single by a band that released two albums (including one which made the UK top 10) and then broke up somewhat abruptly in 2008. They were hotly-tipped for a while but I suspect the indie/post-punk revival scene was probably at saturation point when they were around.
More up later!

Agree with everything you say about "Valerie".
The Coral are a hugely under-rated band. Unless I missed it, the critics never seemed to warm to them, in the way that, say, the La's, get exalted from far and wide for a career which produced just one decent single.
Amy MacDonald has produced 3 great albums so far, yet interest in her output died far too quickly, again for reasons I don't understand.

Also great to see this underrated track, Mr Understanding Pete & the Pirates (2008), love it! 3 members of Pete & The Pirates got back together and formed a band called Teleman, I nominated their single "Skeleton Dance" in EP's August non-hit single of the month, been top 5 in my chart for a few month now
