Lowest entries for Idlewild and Mew, plus rock and electronica...
371 Show Me How To Live Audioslave (2003) 372 Love Burns Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (2002) 373 The Zookeeper's Boy Mew (2006) 374 Emerge Fischerspooner (2003) 375 Go With The Flow Queens of the Stone Age (2003) 376 Actually It's Darkness Idlewild (2000) 377 Island In The Sun Weezer (2001) 378 We Are Your Friends Justice vs. Simian (2006) 379 The Skin Of My Yellow Country Teeth Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (2006) 380 There Goes The Fear Doves (2002)
#371. Audioslave - Show Me How To Live (2003)
In 2001, three members of one renowned rock band (Rage Against The Machine) teamed up with the vocalist from another (Chris Cornell of Soundgarden) to form a supergroup called Audioslave, which was... in all honesty, never as good as the sum of its parts would suggest. Having lost one of RatM's most innovative elements - Zack de la Rocha's rapping - the end product was three albums of mostly forgettable, MOR hard rock which I was progressively less and less interested in (I don't think I even made it as far as the third). Having said that, Cornell is an amazing vocalist, and when they were good, they were very, very good. Show Me How To Live is a great example and, I think, the best thing the band produced during its short lifespan.

A collection of some well-known indie, some slightly more obscure indie, a song by a singer many people won't even have heard of, and a song by a band that really love exclamation marks!!
361 Remember Me British Sea Power (2001) 362 You! Me! Dancing! Los Campesinos! (2007) 363 Parliament Square Stina Nordenstam (2005) 364 Oh Yeah The Subways (2005) 365 Coming Around Travis (2000) 366 When You Were Young The Killers (2006) 367 Sixteen Military Wives The Decemberists (2005) 368 Bedshaped Keane (2004) 369 I Believe In A Thing Called Love The Darkness (2003) 370 Blind Pilots Cooper Temple Clause (2003)
#363. Stina Nordenstam - Parliament Square (2005)
The vast majority of songs in this list will be ones which defined my 2000s, songs I've played pretty regularly since their release, but there are one or two which were hiding, almost completely forgotten about, in the depths of my music collection, only to be uncovered while I was compiling a longlist and then shortlist for the final 500. This is one of those. I will freely admit that I don't know much about Stina Nordenstam: not unlike another, significantly more well-known singer, she's not big on live performances, and seems to like changing her appearance a lot. I was introduced to this chilling ballad by a friend at university and I remember it having a big impact on me at the time, but also finding it quite hard to listen to. Having unearthed it a couple of months ago when I started work on the list, I thought it deserved a place - and probably a mention here, since I'd be surprised if everyone knows of her. I don't normally go in for what I call the 'wispy elfin Scandinavian female' vocal style but I think her voice is something altogether different and darker. It's a great song.

Partly as an apology for this going slower than I would like (I had a couple of teeth out today and feel a bit rubbish), and partly because I've always loved it, here's another video from the last set:
#365. Travis - Coming Around (2000)
A bit of a strange single, this, released between 1999's The Man Who and 2001's The Invisible Band but appearing on neither (at least not initially). It's long been one of my favourite singles of theirs: it has a lovely melodic, almost Beatles-ish jangle to it which was markedly different from anything else they'd recorded at the time. Also, the video. Fran Healy as Humpty Dumpty!

With the exception of Junior Senior, every artist in this set has either already featured at least once or will appear again. MSP and Foo Fighters get off the mark, there's another entry for Lykke Li, and a first entry for one of my favourite bands of the decade...
351 We Own The Sky M83 (2008) 352 Black Cherry Goldfrapp (2004) 353 Let Robeson Sing Manic Street Preachers (2001) 354 Move Your Feet Junior Senior (2003) 355 Hard To Explain The Strokes (2001) 356 All My Life Foo Fighters (2002) 357 Sweetness Jimmy Eat World (2002) 358 Oxford Comma Vampire Weekend (2008) 359 I'm Good, I'm Gone Lykke Li (2008) 360 Believe The Chemical Brothers (2005)
#351. M83 - We Own The Sky (2008)
Seeing M83 in my list won't come as a massive surprise to anyone: although they only have 5 entries in the top 500, most of them are pretty high up. Having been somewhat impressed by their earlier work, I fell in love with them in the late 00s, mostly as a result of 2008's Saturdays=Youth, which although it can't hold a candle to the follow-up, Hurry Up, We're Dreaming, has undoubtedly been one of the strongest influences on my taste in music over the past few years. This single was one of my favourites from the album from first listen and I still love it now. For me, M83 made some of the most beautiful and evocative music of any genre produced in the 2000s.

All these will make an appearance in my top 1000, some higher, some quite a bit higher and some lower, the only one likely to be pushed out is keane but I have 6 higher entries by them so they are well represented
361 Remember Me British Sea Power (2001) 364 Oh Yeah The Subways (2005) 366 When You Were Young The Killers (2006) 368 Bedshaped Keane (2004) 369 I Believe In A Thing Called Love The Darkness (2003) 370 Blind Pilots Cooper Temple Clause (2003) 371 Show Me How To Live Audioslave (2003) 372 Love Burns Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (2002) 373 The Zookeeper's Boy Mew (2006) 374 Emerge Fischerspooner (2003) 375 Go With The Flow Queens of the Stone Age (2003) 376 Actually It's Darkness Idlewild (2000) 377 Island In The Sun Weezer (2001)

The collection of tracks from 360-351 is easily the best ten so far. Nice variety, and some really strong tracks, from which I'd pick out the wonderful Goldfrapp; and the Manics, whose 00s output is under-appreciated, and is on a par with the more celebrated 90s releases.

As promised, another entry from The Veronicas, plus Kaiser Chiefs, Death Cab For Cutie and Arcade Fire - one of the most represented artists - finally get off the mark...
341 Untouched The Veronicas (2007) 342 I Will Possess Your Heart Death Cab For Cutie (2008) 343 Beat Control Tilly and the Wall (2006) 344 The Angry Mob Kaiser Chiefs (2007) 345 The Rake's Song The Decemberists (2009) 346 Don't Give Up Noisettes (2006) 347 Formulae JJ72 (2002) 348 Intervention Arcade Fire (2007) 349 Spread Your Love Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (2002) 350 The Blues Are Still Blue Belle and Sebastian (2006)
#344. Kaiser Chiefs - The Angry Mob (2007)
An under-rated single by one of the darlings of the 00s British indie scene, Kaiser Chiefs. I've never been their biggest fan - I did like a few of the singles from the first album, as this list will demonstrate, but was put off the second album by 'Ruby', which did nothing for me. I regret never buying it now because this single was kind of awesome. The Chiefs are unlikely to be remembered as great social commentators of their time but this scathing indictment of tabloid culture contains among the most on-the-money lyrics they've ever written: 'We are the angry mob / We read the papers every day / We like who we like / We hate who we hate / But we're also easily swayed...' Seven years later, in the wake of celebrity sex scandals and the ever-increasing fear and hatred whipped up by anti-immigration discourse, the song has more resonance than ever before.

"Untouched" is my favourite running song (although have not done much running of late). The Stina Nordenstam song is excellent - must revisit some of her material at some point.

Annnnnd we're back.
An admittedly eclectic mix here, including a song I used to hate but has proved irresistible over the years (Scissor Sisters), a song by the first signed band I ever saw live (Sparta), and one of the most well-known songs of the decade...
331 Air Sparta (2003) 332 Mica Mew (2000) 333 Long Live The Queen Frank Turner (2008) 334 Blue Orchid The White Stripes (2005) 335 I Don't Feel Like Dancin' Scissor Sisters (2006) 336 Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up) Florence + the Machine (2009) 337 Mercy Duffy (2008) 338 Teddy Picker Arctic Monkeys (2007) 339 Generator The Holloways (2005) 340 Golden Touch Razorlight (2004)
#337. Duffy - Mercy (2008)
I don't have a lot to say about this entry, other than it's a pretty great single from one of the most distinctive vocalists I can remember of over the past decade, and I think it's a shame that after Rockferry she never really took off in the way Adele did...

It's a mid-decades indie fest. As promised, a couple from Thorney's most recent sections here...
320 Don't Save Us From The Flames M83 (2005) 321 Meccano Red Light Company (2008) 322 Little Thoughts Bloc Party (2004) 323 DOA Foo Fighters (2005) 324 1901 Phoenix (2009) 325 Everyday I Love You Less And Less Kaiser Chiefs (2005) 326 Can't Stand Me Now The Libertines (2004) 327 Cause = Time Broken Social Scene (2003) 328 Do You Want To Franz Ferdinand (2005) 329 La Ritournelle Sébastien Tellier (2005)
#322. Bloc Party - Little Thoughts (2004)
Bloc Party were one of the best things to come out of the '00s indie revival and feature pretty heavily in my list. This song - their lowest entry - used to be my favourite of theirs and was the reason I first noticed them ten years ago. I recall being a bit miffed when I realised it had been left off their debut album - until I realised that Silent Alarm was actually packed full of amazing songs that were, by and large, even better.

Nope, sorry. Bloc Party never did anything for me. Nor did any of the other shmindie bands that majors liked to think were edgy and dangerous. Other than "I Predict A Riot" but that probably kicked the whole thing off.
