Florence & The Machine are a band, Florence Welch is the lead singer but when you have a group named as the singer plus a "backing group", you might count it as a solo, just like Elvis Costello & The Attractions would have been, or Prince & The Revolution. I don't know how significant "The Machine" are, and whether legally they are a "band" or a singer plus session musicians or whatever.
However The Eurythmics were definitely a duo back in 1988 and 1989 and Annie Lennox didn't release solo material until 1992 so she should never have won those early Brit awards. Similarly Alison Moyet won one when she was still part of Yazoo.

I had Years & Years or Jess Glynne winning the best newcomer, was amazed when Catfish won! Also saw Bjork and Tame Impala won!

I still didn't think they had more fans than Years & Years or Jess Glynne, social media or not. Multiple texting I assume, as mum and dad pay the bill!
