Im not sure travis were cool but a bit geeky but I loved them. I think sterophonics were pretty cool back in the day.

I love Over My Shoulder! The rest of their output not so much. I guess by this stage they were into the ex-coffee table club of the 80's with Genesis, Dire Straits, Peter Gabriel, and Paul Simon.

Shampoo! Their debut album is a work of pop genius, but absolutely everyone I knew thought they were terrible. Some people even thought I was joking.

Based on what seems like most of the posters on this site, a band from Oxford who are about to release their latest album and go on a world tour which begins in May; where as I think that are the best rock band of the past quarter of a century:

I was convinced by an ex-girlfriend (not a related issue) to listen to these guys' debut album, and it's actually rather good, if not a little bit on the cheesy side on occasion. This song might be considered an example of such.

At first I was going to say My Chemical Romance, who were popular but not cool, but I think time has changed people's stance on them somewhat. Then I was going to say Linkin Park since they were always considered a bit of a joke in the rock/metal community.
Then I remembered McFly, and that wins.
(Really half the stuff I like isn't considered 'cool' but I'm long past the point of caring.)
