I love them. I sa them live and it was really good. Except that I nearly collapsed. Is there a story behind that??

I have also seen them live and they were pretty good, not quite as good as alphabeat though

At first I was going to say My Chemical Romance, who were popular but not cool, but I think time has changed people's stance on them somewhat. Then I was going to say Linkin Park since they were always considered a bit of a joke in the rock/metal community. Then I remembered McFly, and that wins. (Really half the stuff I like isn't considered 'cool' but I'm long past the point of caring.) I like all 3 I was listening to the best of something corporate the other day too ha

I think too obscure to even have earned the status of uncool in many people's eyes, but His Latest Flame were a pretty decent band - their album "In The Neighbourhood" still sounds fresh and great, 27 years on....but they sure had no coolness points
This was the nearest thing they had to a hit, no 85 in late 1989

I suppose most people think of Altered Images as a one-hit novelty wonder; some might remember them having two hits. I doubt anyone remembers much more. Certainly I've never come across anyone else who thought they were the greatest band ever to walk the planet.

I tend to remember 3 Altered Images hits although they had others which may have even reached my chart at the time.
Too many of the artists on here are more "considered uncool" rather than "a joke".
I would put my admiration of Chas & Dave as more in the latter category. I even like their sport-related hits, even though some of those are about a football club I don't support.

Chas & Dave have sort of gone full circle. These days people respect them as bona fide musicians who could turn their hand to anything. As they were when they were session musicians at the start of their careers.

I got a lot of stick at school for liking Barry Manilow.
In my youth at school i used to love that Et Les Oiseaux Chaintaint by Sweet People back in 1982 i think it was and got hounded for being the only one in the class not to hate it.
Its taste at the end of the day and over the years i have leant towards the easy listening more than anything anything else

I think I've got it on 12" somewhere.

I love the song and I think it's amazing, also love Dolores voice but many seem to hate her/them... especially NME

Although it was meant as a tribute, I seem to recall music journalists turning on the Cranberries en masse, saying it was exploitative, insensitive and crass.

10 worst songs of the 90s (nme) 7. THE CRANBERRIES – ‘ZOMBIE’ A grunge-lite tread through the problems of the IRA with lyrics which were presumably penned by a goldfish (“With the same old team/Since 1916”) and sung by a woman apparently experiencing the most guttural, unrelenting, 72 hour labour you could imagine. Grizzly. Read more at www.nme.com/blogs/nme-blogs/10-worst-songs-of-the-90s#RfBtA6xgWb4lSEwQ.99

Not the biggest fan if 'Zombie' but 'Linger' was lovely but generally The Sundays did that style of music so much better
What is Lene Matlin doing at 5 , I don't even remember NME even mentioning here never mind hating her more than Billie or Lighthouse Family.

actually that list is evil theres carillon of stupid songs from the 90s from 2 Unlimited to Vengaboyz to Macerna...
I actually loved Lene Marlin, the album that has Unforgivale Sinner and Sitting Down Here is amazing
Don't think the Sundays resembled the Cranberries at all, Cranberries were much rock less ethereal... actually loved both, Reaing, Writing is an amazing album, one of the best debuts ever.

Cranberries were rounded on for some pretty ropey lyrics and the serious pained over earnest Delores was mocked. That said there has always been a bit of a British thing knocking serious women stars - Tori and Alanis in particular. We never got into the Lilith Fair thing here.
As for original topic, I'm a pretty big Coldplay fan who are criticised by many but their songs are just so good and a lot of their stuff is pretty convincing art rock especially parts of Viva Le Vida ad Ghost Stories.

True but they do overlap a bit specially with the later albums , glad you like RWA it's one of my favourite albums ever Think 'sitting down here ' was a number one in my chart if it wasn't it was pretty damn close

Re The Cranberries, "I Just Shot John Lennon" was a crap song on what was otherwise a really very good concept album. I bought a pirate cassette copy (pretty much the only kind available in that lawless time and place) when I lived in Ukraine The earlier album was great too - "Daffodil Lament" is something special, an utterly gorgeous dirge, that eventually comes through like the arrival of spring after a vicious Ukrainian winter. I listened to those songs staring at the biggest icicles I've ever seen in my life in several months of vastly sub-zero temperatures, and, certainly more than anything else sung in English, they really bring back those days for me. I was in Romania the previous summer, and the music of the Cranberries was absolutely inescapable there, too. They must have been massive in Eastern Europe - and deservedly so.
