Nine retro rewind chart entries from:
- The Grammy, Oscar & Golden Globe award winning ballad song was composed and performed by Barbra Streisand with lyrics by Paul Williams from the musical film A Star Is Born (the 2nd remake of the 1937 original, & 1954 2nd version starring Judy Garland .... a 4th version starring Bradley Cooper and Golden Globe award winning actress Lady Gaga is due for filming from March 2017 with a planned release in September 2018) became a USA #1, Canada #1, UK #3 & Australia #5 hit.
- The space rock title track of the 1976 blockbusting album reached USA #2, & Canada #2. It was later covered by Seal to become a UK top 20 hit.
- The Glasgow born folk singer/songwriter whom sounded like Neil Tennant before the Pet Shop Boys existed, had his career breakthrough with the title track of his 7th studio album produced by Alan Parsons. The nearly 7 minute long jazz folk soft rock track peaked at UK #31, USA #8, Canada #3 & Australia #13, and was a big hit across Europe. The saxophone part was played by Liverpool born sessionman Phil Kenzie who was most famous previously for featuring on Paul McCartney's Band On The Run album, and later turned up on The Eagles' Long Run; Rod Stewart's Do You Think I'm Sexy; and perhaps most memorably George Michael's Careless Whisper & its doppelganger Debbie Gibson's Foolish Beat.
- The seminal Wind & The Wuthering album track was arguably progressive classical guitarist's Steve Hackett's finest contribution to the band (with lyrics by Phil Collins) before he left after this album as he felt increasingly constricted by the band's increasingly direct musical style.
- The adult contemporary ballad written by Albert Hammond and Carole Bayer Sager, and produced by Richard Perry became a massive worldwide hit topping the charts in the UK, USA & Canada as well as Australia #8.
- The Los Angeles all-female rock band single which failed to chart at the time, has with hindsight become a showcase for its composer, guitarist & singer on the track Joan Jett distinctive rock stylings which served her well in the 1980s.
- The San Diego, California born soft rock singer/songwriter debut single reached USA #22 & Canada #20 and was taken from his album Careless.
- The second single from the 4th studio album by the disco funk group was this under performing USA #37 release.
- Taken from Jeff Lynne's group's 6th studio album A New World Record is this peppy and upbeat track which is one of their most well known non singles.

Seven more new entries this week from:
- The first single from his fourth solo album and the first consisting entirely of original songs, In Your Mind which peaked at UK #9.
- The FM rock classic written by Lindsey Buckingham, was the first single from the group's 1977 album Rumours. It peaked USA #10, UK #38, Australia #20 & Canada #11, but it topped the charts in Belgium & the Netherlands.
- The much played lead single & title track from his ninth studio album, with producer Jack Richardson. This Springsteen-esque rocker peaked at USA #4, Canada #5, Australia #25 & (in 1995) UK #45.
- Motown's Mississippi born singer & actress (not related to Whitney) R&B disco cover of the 1975 Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes original hit USA #1 (R&B #1) & South Africa #1, Canada #4, Australia #6, & UK #13.
- The third and final single from the band's fifth studio album Love's a Prima Donna, was written & produced by Steve Harley, but despite it being one of his strongest, and now most well known tracks, it failed to trouble the UK top 50.
- The Detroit based disco/smooth soul outfit USA #56 & UK #29 hit.
- The Minnesota born folk country soft pop singer's signature tune written & produced by Peter Yarrow (of the folk music trio Peter, Paul & Mary) and Phillip Jarrell topped the charts in the USA, Australia & Canada, as well as making UK #4. However, the song had first been turned down by the Carpenters, Diana Ross & Helen Reddy. Whilst the singer herself hated her own chart-topper, chiefly because she had little sympathy for the narrator of "Torn Between Two Lovers", a woman who confesses to her husband that she is having an affair, but pleads with her husband to stay with her and accept the situation. Macgregor also said that the song indirectly led to the breakup of her own marriage, because her career kept her away from home so often that her relationship with her husband strained, and they decided to separate.

01 Stevie Wonder - Isn't She Lovely (3wks 21-2-1)
At the time, which was when I just started my chart, I charted the David Parton cover, but whenever I have played it as a retro chart I always substitute the original. And even back then I knew it was a cover and knew the Stevie Wonder version, and thought it was a much better song than "I Wish".

19/02/1977 33 Rubettes - Baby I Know (1wk 33 NEW)
The English pop group's final of 9 top 40 hits was this country folk UK #10 hit.
This was a #1 in my chart in 1977. It was on Top of the Pops 3 times I think, two of those with David Jensen presenting. Many had forgotten it until it appeared on those 3 repeated episodes in 2012.

Finally getting better. "(I'm) Stranded" has a shout at being the first punk single. Gloriously angry sound. They are one of the unlikeliest acts to have a top 40. Then there's "New Rose", rush-released to beat "Anarchy" so that Stiff could claim that unlikely crown.
It's been said of The Ramones that they only had one song. But it's a good one. I never really got them.
Same as I never got Innervisions era Wonder. Not a patch on the exciting sixties child prodigy.
The Racing Cars single is an understated classic. Based around a novel/film about a dance marathon from the Depression era. Although it obviously has a deeper meaning.

Knowing Me Abba's finest moment.
Lost chance for Diana Ross - Hal David had wanted her to record Don't Leave Me This Way as the follow up to Love Hangover but the session was never completed and it ended up with Thelma Houston.
