At number one .... just watch this glorious live clip from 1977 on tour in Japan and realize the utter Katie Hopkins troll baiting foolishness of that 1989 Stock Aitken & Waterman penned song which blew up in their faces.
Seven new entries in the last week of 1977 from:
- The London post punk band debut single from their Harvest (EMI) released album Pink Flag penned by the quartet (Bruce Gilbert, Graham Lewis, Colin Newman, and Robert Gotobed).
- The debut USA #1, Canada #1, UK #32 & Australia #15 single from the American Yacht Rock band's self titled debut album, written by Peter Beckett and J.C. Crowley of the group.
- The Australian singer's Australia #12 hit which made the top 5 in Germany & The Netherlands was a disco song written & produced by George Young and Harry Vanda which musically was the prototype of his global smash hit of 1978....
- The Canadian songwriter's Phil Spector (over)produced Death Of A Ladies Man album cut (during which sessions Cohen's friends poet Allen Ginsberg & Bob Dylan were ordered at gunpoint by the insane producer to sing backing vocals on one track...) is the only one which Cohen subsequently sung live from what he described as the "disastrous" album (which subsequently saw no tracks included on his 2002 The Essential 2CD career spanning set of his other 11 albums).
- The Harvey Shield penned USA #24 lush pop ballad from the Harry Maslin produced It's A Game album, was to be their final significant chart hit anywhere.
- The Progressive rock group from Toronto, Ontario, Canada famous for the core line up of bassist, keyboardist, and lead vocalist Geddy Lee; guitarist and backing vocalist Alex Lifeson; and drummer, percussionist, and lyricist Neil Peart saw this 5th album track from A Farewell To The Kings become their first international hit peaking at Canada #45, USA #76 & UK #36.
- The USA #17 & Canada #13 Book Of Dreams rock album track co-written & produced by Steve Miller. It would be 4 years before we'd next see new material from the Milwaukee born blues rock guitarist, singer & songwriter.

I sort-of get that Mr Blue Sky copies "A Day In The Life" with the intro matching the intro to the Paul McCartney section in the latter, if you can call the same note repeating in rhythm "copying" it. Not sure where it copies the Bee Gees.
Dan Hill wrote more songs for other artists later, including some on Celine Dion's "Falling Into You" album. This song was co-written with Barry Mann. I read a story that Dan Hill had written a song but couldn't get it published / released or whatever. He met with Barry Mann who essentially wrote a new tune for it, with the original lyrics, and it became a hit.
1978 is such a great year for music.

Not sure where it copies the Bee Gees. 1978 is such a great year for music. Mr Lynne himself admitted it beared similarities to Beatles songs "Martha My Dear" and "A Day in the Life" (he had OK'd it with Paul McCartney beforehand); and also utilized Beatles’ arrangement quotes (Penny Lane bell, Sgt. Pepper horns, Abbey Road arpeggio guitars); whilst using Gibb Brothers’ triple harmony vocal inflexions.

Back in 1978, I was madly in love with "Denis" and of course it was #1 in my chart for 5 weeks. Now I'm not sure it would even get to #1 in my chart at all. Competition from the song at #4 in your chart and the one entering at #25 may be too strong for it.
I wouldn't expect a song about a recently deceased painter to provide too much competition for it though, although I would still chart that song. (At the time it got to #6 in my chart)

Tom Robinson came under criticism later I think by certain people for daring to marry a woman after releasing that song. His response was that it's all about freedom to be in relationships with whoever you want, regardless of their gender.
This is one of the strongest periods of the chart ever in my opinion.

In my retro chart "Denis" obviously was weekly # 1 in 1978, together with other Blondie hits from this year ((I'm Always Touched By Your) Presence Dear and Picture This), but my favourite song of 1978 is not very predictable choice.

- The post punk single penned by Graham Newman & Colin Lewis from their second album Chairs Missing produced by Mike Thorne, which Franz Ferdinand sound like they based their entire career on.

Nine Retro Rewind entries from:
- When Bee Gees manager Robert Stigwood was producing a movie about a New York disco scene, the working title for the film at that time was Saturday Night as Stigwood asked the group to write a song using that name as a title, but Barry, Maurice & Robin thought it was a dumb title, but they had already written a song called "Night Fever". The group convinced Stigwood to use that and change the film to Saturday Night Fever. It was a top ten smash everywhere including topping the charts in the UK, Canada, Spain, Ireland, Brazil & USA where it also replaced Andy Gibb's "Love Is Thicker Than Water" at number one and was in turn replaced by Yvonne Elliman's "If I Can't Have You" - all of which were written and produced by the Gibb brothers (How's about that Ed Sheeran?)
- The Nick Lowe produced UK #16 single recorded with the Attractions ( Steve Nieve (keyboards and ukulele), Bruce Thomas (bass guitar), and Pete Thomas (drums)) from his album This Year's Model, for the Liverpool post punk poet.
- Errol Brown's disco soul group's UK #12, Australia #12, USA #6, Canada #11 title track of their 1978 album.
- The space rocking USA #14, Canada #7 & Australia #3 second single release from his album French Kiss with backing vocals provided by Juice Newton.
- The self written & produced soft rock title track of the Bread singer's third solo album, was also the theme to the film with the same title. It peaked at USA #15 (AC #7).
- The soft rock USA #25, Canada #7, & UK #42 self penned track recorded for his third album, All This and Heaven Too. It later became the theme song for the NBC sitcom The Golden Girls.
- The USA #70 & Canada #76 Draw The Line album Power Ballad written by Steven Tyler, Brad Whitford, Tom Hamilton, Joey Kramer, and producer Jack Douglas.
- The 11 minute title track of the New York alternative art rocker's 1978 album was divided into three distinct sections: "Waltzing Matilda," "Street Hassle," and "Slipaway." Part Three, "Slipaway," contains a brief one minute, uncredited, spoken word section by Bruce Springsteen.
- The seminal post punk indie electronica track written by Martin Rev & Alan Vega from their debut self titled album.
