Madonna spent 20 weeks at # 1 (with 4 singles) in 1984, only Blondie had the more successful calendar year with 23 weeks at # 1 (also with 4 singles) in 1979.

20 weeks at #1 is a lot, although my record was broken in 2015 when Skinny Lister had 16 weeks at #1, and that's in addition to 3 in December 2014. Prior to that the record was held by Oasis with 13 in 1995 (with one additional week on the last week of 1994).

My record holder has 14 weeks at # 1 and two other songs each spent 10 weeks at # 1. Blondie got their 23 weeks at # 1 in 1979 with Heart Of Glass (6 weeks at # 1), Sunday Girl (9 weeks at # 1), Dreaming (7 weeks at # 1), Union City Blue (1 week at # 1)

I don't, and in the period 1960-1966 so far, only one single has managed 7 weeks on top. During the 2010s so far also only one single has managed it. There used to be more though
Skinny Lister's had 4 number ones in my chart in 2016 for 4, 5, 4 and 3 weeks.
In 1984 it was joint on 9 weeks between the Thompson Twins and Frankie Goes To Hollywood. The Thompson Twins had 3 number ones all top for 3 weeks, with Frankie Goes To Hollywood had 3 number ones, 2 + 2 + 5 weeks.

30) Thompson Twins - You Take Me Up (666 points)
Retro Chart Run: 4-3-2-4-11-16-19-27-X-30-25-26 (11 weeks) Official UK Chart Peak: 2 Into the Top 30 songs of the year now and the last of the songs by the Thompson Twins on this countdown, marking a fantastic year for them. Really surprised that they've never had a number one on the Retro Chart. Not sure what future singles they've got to come but fear it may never happen for them now. So, another Thompson Twins and another number one for Earl and Thorney. This time their joined in their appreciation of You Take Me Up by Smokey, his only Thompson Twins chart topper of the year.
