***********************NUMBER 9************************
Heart - What About Love
Second song for Heart in the top 20 and this powerful power ballad is just utterly brilliant. This song has everything I wanted in a song in 1985-1987. This was their big comeback single in the US where it returned them to the top 10 after a 5 year absence. It was also the album which the Uk first took notice of although it did not sell enough commercially at the time. It reached #10 in the US but after the success of 'Alone' and 'Bad Animals' it finally reached #14 in the UK in 1988.

Propaganda - Duel
Next up is what I call a big radio hit. I loved this at the time but had no idea who did it but for years later it still got played on Radio 1 and I eventually found out who they were. It still gets played quite a bit on the radio on Radio 2 and 6 Music. This was the German band's biggest hit in the UK reaching #21.

The Cure - In Between Days
I had been following the Cure for some time but this song was really next level, by far the best song they had done so far and probably woudl be in my top 5 Cure songs. It was their first single to chart in the US reaching #99 and #15 in the UK.

***********************NUMBER 6************************ 'Til Tuesday - Voices Carry
Now I have to admit I didn't know this song at the time , my first encounter with Aimee Mann was as guest vocalist on Rush - Time Stands Still and later I followed her solo career. I discovered this song through GTA Vice City, I couldn't believe I managed to find another brilliant 80s song 20 years late. It is just an epic pop/rock track just so atmospheric and just total 80s!! It reached #8 in the US but flopped in UK

Mr Mister - Broken Wings
This though I definitely knew at the time both through No Limits and Casey Kasems US Top 10 show which I wish I had vote much sooner. Just a classic power ballad that just takes me back to 1986. It was a US number one and UK number 4.

Starship - We Built This City
This top 5 are so good they would also easily make my top 50 songs of all time. Although a hit in 1985 in the US, I didn't hear this until 1986, another song that featured on US Top 10 and No Limits. Americans regard this as super cheesy and it is quite hated there topping Rolling Stones worse song of the 80s poll in 2011, here we still love it. It was a US number one and reached #12 in UK.

The Hooters - And We Danced
This song was a No Limits powerplay but it kind of past me by or just suck into the depths of my memories. It wasn't until our old friend Yahoo music at Dotmusic introduced it to me on a random 80s radio station. Straight away it all came flooding back, how could I have forgotten this song. Just so 80s it hurts, it is so much better than 'Satellite' which is brilliant as well of course. If I need a pick up or a change of mood, I stick this song onto YouTube and straight away i am 15 again. Cajun pop at its very best and those synths wow!. It reached #21 in the US.

Bryan Adams - Run To You
The top two are both absolute rock classics. The lead single from the album 'Reckless', it was the song that really got him noticed all over the world. 'Reckless' was my album of the year so no surprises this would be so high. It reached #6 in the US and #11 in the UK.

Don Henley - The Boys Of Summer
This is my second favourite song of all time. I hated school and life in the Highlands, I wanted to live the American Dream, I wanted neon lights, cities, hot girls, sun, beaches, junk food, sunglasses, fast cars. The life and world in these lyrics and video was everything I wanted. That glamorous and total alien life was just a fantasy as we all now the US wasn't all that after all, it wasn't real at all. But it doesn't stop me imagining those times whenever I hear this song. It is quite ironic that this song is about looking back. A huge song in 1987 has a similar theme. The ultimate GTA Vice City song as your drive along the waterfront at night with the neon lights, you just forget to play the actual game. The best AOR record ever. It reached #5 in the US and #12 in the UK.

1986 ok we are counting down our retro charts for this year so there will be a few spoilers here but we will start with two songs that just miss the top 100. 1986 is a huge year for me as it was the year I started buying music with my own pocket money.
102 Don't Give Up – Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush
Haven Factor 4 Winner Kim Wilde #101

100 Bizarre Love Triangle – New Order
Of course I knew 'Blue Monday' but 1986 was the first year I really paid proper attention to New Order. This is their only song in the top 100 but its a very strong year so it has done well to make the cut especially above those two songs that just missed out. Surprising that it missed the top 40 in UK and US reaching #56 year and #98 in the US.

99 Johnny Johnny – Prefab SproutOnly appearance for Prefab Sprout as well, with another great single which underachieves, what does this band have to do , make a novelty song about Elvis or something?? The last single taken from 'Steve Macqueen' it reached #64 in the UK.

98 Over The Hills And Far Away – Gary Moore
One of the first singles I bought with my own money, I bought it as I thought it sounded like a really good Big Country song. I had no idea who he was at the time. Thin Lizzy was one of my uncles favourite bands but they were a totally a different era to me. A huge hit in Scandinavia it reached #20 in the UK.

For me it evokes rather different feelings as I associate it with my much-missed Dad who introduced me to it, but I still play it loads.

97 R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A. (A Salute To 60's Rock) – John Mellencamp
Only appear for John Cougar Mellencamp as he was known now in 1986. It was his 3rd single single from 'Scarecrow' and reached #2 in the US, his 2nd biggest hit and #67 in the UK.

96 What Have You Done For Me Lately - Album Edit – Janet Jackson
Up until now Janet Jackson has not had a lot of success , that all changed with this single and her 3rd album 'Control'. I was a huge fan of hers at the time. This track reached #4 in the US and #3 in the UK.

95 Sara – Starship
The follow up single to the massive hit 'We Built This City'. This ballad flopped in the UK unlike most other countries. It managed to give them another chart topper in the Us and Canada. Only managed #66 in the UK.

94 Your Wildest Dreams - The Moody Blues
Now a British band that most people had forgotten that they were still going but somehow they were still having huge hits in the US. Their comeback helped by the fact that they really nailed MTV videos with this song and their next big US hit. Always loved Justin Haywards voice, I knew him mostly for 'Forever Autumn'. This was a No Limits powerplay and reached #9 in the US.

93 Left Of Center – Suzanne Vega, Joe Jackson
Suzanne Vega's 2nd hit in the UK, taken from the movie 'Pretty In Pink'. It features Joe Jackson on piano. It reached #32 in the UK but still no success in the US charts, maybe female singer songwriters will be trendy soon...

92 You've Got The Power – Win
Now a track I have just featured in my current retro charts, Scottish indie pop band released this track from the groundbreaking TV advert for 'McEwans Lager'. Released three times it never became a big hit although it did chart in Scotland. Definitely the 'Spaceman' of its time.
