71 Lessons In Love – Level 42
I think this pretty much there biggest song although their 1987 single will run it very close. First single taken from the 'Running in The family' album, it was their biggest hit reaching #3 in the UK and #12 in the US.

70 Glory Of Love – Peter Cetera
Now a massive power ballad taken from one of my favourite movies of 1986. Showing that Peter Cetera really was Chicago, this song taken from Karate Kid Part II spend two weeks at number one in the US and make it to #3 in the UK.

69 Open Your Heart – Madonna
Now we have something special, the first Madonna single I ever bought. My sister owned 'True Blue' but for some reason I just wanted this for myself. I think it is quite an underrated Madonna song just love the Patrick Leonard production. It was a US number one and reached #4 in the UK.

68 Camouflage – Stan Ridgway
A rare thing a novelty record which is both properly funny and musically and lyrically intelligent. I just loved this song so much at the time, I didn't actually know at the time that he was actually an alternative pop star in the past. It reached #4 in the UK.

67 Land Of Confusion - Genesis
The second Spitting Image song of 1986, you won't be seeing the other one on this list. Just a really great video that could only really happen in 1986. Lyrically we are right back where this song was then.. It reached #4 in the US and #14 in the UK.

66 The Captain of Her Heart – Double
1986 the year of one hit wonders continues with this lovely synth pop ballad from this Swiss band. Still gives me chills this song. It reached #8 in the Uk and #16 in the US.

65 Word Up – Cameo
Sometimes a song can come along that is so far away from what you would normally listen to but the quality is so great, you just fall in love with it anyway. 'Word Up' was one of those songs. Hard funk in the higher reaches of the chart it just stood out a mile. In a time when most black music was quite samey and bland, they were a breathe of fresh air. It reached #3 in the UK and #6 in the US.

64 I Didn't Mean To Turn You On – Robert Palmer
Never really understood the lyric on this song until I discovered it was gender swapped which was really progressive for the time, not sure if it was intentional it must have been. A song about a man turning down a woman when things go too far just seemed wrong then! Nowadays in these enlightened times this man would be applauded. It shows the gender politics at the time that this action would be expected of a woman but not a man. Sadly from Cherelle's perspective in the original version it was a common occurrence. I actually prefer this song to 'Addicted to Love' now as it is less played. It reached #2 in the US and #9 in the UK.

63 When I Think Of You – Janet Jackson
My favourite Janet Jackson song of 1986 and the one where I really noticed her and got a big crush on her. Guess it helped that I was already into Five Star. It was Janet Jackson's first US number one and reached #10 in the UK.

62 The Promise You Made – Cock Robin
Oh we haven't had a song like this for awhile. One of the finest sophisto-pop tracks ever and this is far too low!! This band really should have been huge but this is just a perfect single. Yes this is too low gawd, think I will make up for that when we get to it in the Retro Chart for it. It was a huge hit all over Europe and eventually 2 years later became a hit in the UK but only #28, I guess it was really a bit out of time now sadly.

61 Ask - The Smiths
1986 the year where I really noticed The Smiths, still not really into them yet but starting to appreciate the quality of their singles. They have two more songs to come on the list. This must be one of their catchiest songs though. It reached #14 in the UK.

60 Look Away – Big Country
A good place to stop, my highest new entry in my retro chart for this week in 1986. Big Country return with one of their most pop singles yet. It was the first single from the album 'The Seer' and was their biggest hit in the UK reaching #7.

59 Sanctify Yourself - Simple Minds
The other huge Scottish band of the time, every single they released in this period was a banger, they have one more to come. Second single taken from 'Once Upon A Time' it reached #10 in the UK and #14 in the US.

58 Sometimes - Erasure
Coming into the charts near the end of 1986, I still think of this more of an 1987 song. Erasure have been threatening to break through for a while but this awesome single really did it for them. It would go onto to reach #2 in the UK.

57 Invisible Touch - – Genesis
The lead single from the album and their biggest hit on this list. Although none of the singles of 'Invisible Touch' made the top 10 it was a number one album and this was a US number one single.

56 C'est La Vie - Robbie Nevil
Now for somebody new and fresh, although it was a hit in the US in 1986 it was a hit in the UK until 1987. This was also one of the few songs I ever bought on cassette single, the first i think. I think at the time I just loved US chart music so much. I struggle thinking about it now as I loved this song so much then it was one of the first number ones in my chart but now its just not something Id listen to. It was a Us number two and would get to #3 in the UK after what seemed like an age.

55 Listen Like Thieves – INXS
Highest year end finish for INXS yet, they seem to be get bigger and better with each release. Third single taken from 'Listen Like Thieves' and the closest yet to a top 40 hit in the UK getting to #46. It only got to #54 in US after the top 10 success of previous single 'What You Need', I suspect it was due to the weaker talky video.

54 Walk Like an Egyptian – The Bangles
1986 was the year that The Bangles really broke through in the UK. Third single taken from 'Different Light' it went on to be the biggest song of the year in the US, it did really well here as well reaching #3. They have one more song to come.

53 Driving Away from Home (Jim's Tune) – It's Immaterial
1986 was a year where a couple of indie bands had really massive amazing songs in the chart and you never really heard from them again. The first of those bands were It's Immaterial. This song about just going for a random road trip was just so classy and cool. It reached #18 in the UK.

52 You Can Call Me Al – Paul Simon
Now a contender for one of the best and most played videos of the year. I must admit I didn't get it at first as I didn't even know what Paul Simon and Chevy Chase looked like, I repeat I was very sheltered in 1986. Once our family finally get a VHS I got up on all his movies hehe It is funny watching it now as it was such a simple concept. Well it was a huge hit all over the world reaching #4 in the UK and #23 in the US.
