So who just misses the top 10 this was a very close call, so close I am tempted to change it but no...
11 Hey, Little Girl – Icehouse
More brilliant new wave this time with a very 80s Roxy Music sound but its so classy and atmospheric, we will forgive its influences. Like all the other songs in the top 20 so far, I loved it at the time. There is actually one song still to come that I didn't know at the time!! This reached #17 in the UK.
I'm going all Icehouse until 7pm reveal. What Can I do!? Electric Blue!!

***********************NUMBER 10************************
Heaven 17 - Temptation
Ok we are into the top 10 and we start with one of the greatest synth pop tracks ever. I really enjoyed getting back into Heaven 17 in the early 90s and I bought all the remixes but this track is their masterpiece. At last the former members of Human league show their ex band mates that they can be pop stars as well. This reached #2 in the UK.

***********************NUMBER 9************************
Big Country - Chance
The third and final track from 'The Crossing' on the list and just a beautiful song. Just an amazing ballad that is one of my all time favourite songs and I think i was to compile and all time top 100 it would probably make the list so maybe this should still be a bit higher. This reached #9 in the UK.

***********************NUMBER 8************************
The Smiths - This Charming Man
I guess this is very predictable but this is the only song in the top 20 that I didn't actually know in the 80s. This is a very big finish but they will have higher year end finishes than this to come and maybe even a big solo entry. This reached #25 in 1983 but went top 10 on re-issue in 1992 where it reached #8, a fair more deserving placing.

***********************NUMBER 7************************
Toto - Africa
The biggest AOR track of 1983 but we do have some more rock to come. Now if we were doing this as the 12 year old me this would probably be my 4th favourite song of 1983, I will tell you the others as we go on. This is quite timely as Toto have just released their best single in 30 years last week, the brilliant 'Spanish Sea' which has given them them first top 40 hit in my chart since 'Pamela' in 1988. Ok 'Spanish Sea' sounds very like 'Africa' but that's a very good thing so who cares. This song reached #1 in the US and #3 in the UK and is taken from what is regarded as their best album 'Toto IV'

***********************NUMBER 6************************
The Police - Every Breath You Take
Probably their most famous song and I think it is one of the most played songs on US radio ever. I think I heard that there is not a moment in the US where there isn't a least one radio station playing this song even today. Anyway it doesn't hold the same magic for me as many Police songs but it is their best song. It was of course a world wide number one.

***********************NUMBER 5************************
New Order - Blue Monday
This song was not an instant like for me, I like many others heard this for the first time on Top Of The Pops and thought what a dirge, everything that was brilliant about the track was lost by the poor soundchecking and Bernard's terrible vocal. I then forgot it, until i started going to discos. Was this even the same song!! My two favourite songs that got me to dance when I was 14-15 was this and the earlier mentioned Simple Minds - I Travel. It was a highlight off my night when either of these songs were played, I just went a bit crazy to be honest. But I never actually owned this track or any New Order until I bought Substance on vinyl in the early 90s , after that I just bought everything and still do. Think it is still the best selling 12" of all time and it reached #9 in the UK on first release but would reach #3 in 1988. I must admit i prefer the 1988 version.

***********************NUMBER 4************************
Men At Work - Down Under
My favourite number one ever. Yes it maybe a bit of a novelty song but 1983 was a very hard year for me. These 4 songs that we have now , got me threw it. This was the best video ever and such a funny song but still had the great voice and sound of Men at Work. anyway it always makes me smile even if I did go off it for a while as I really did play it too much. It was their 3rd single from their 'Business As Usual' album and it was an Australia number one in December 1981, the song then topped the charts in the US in January 1983 and then UK a couple of months later.

***********************NUMBER 3************************
Joe Jackson - Steppin Out
The artist who has my number two song of 1980 has my number three song of 1983 but I love this even more. Everything about this song is amazing. The production, the piano, his vocal, the lyrics and maybe favourite thing of all, the little bleep noise it makes. Yes I am mad but just love that bleep. Its another song that just makes you smile and is so 80s it hurts. It is just one of those songs I play if I want to journey back. Loved that this was on an advert last year as well!! It reached #6 in the UK and #6 in the UK. Actually it does have one flaw the fade-out is far to fast but I guess it leaves you wanting more.

***********************NUMBER 2************************
YES - Owner Of A Lonely Heart
I bet most of you were waiting for this. One of my favourite rock songs ever. Everything about this is awesome. Again its similar to the last song its all the parts together. The great production, all the instrumentation, the catchy chorus, Jons vocal and the creepy stylish video but really its mostly the guitars. It really was quite an achievement for a band that were so complicated and noncommercial to decide they will make a pop record and to do it so well. It was a US number on which you would expect with a track with this sound but only reached #28 in the UK!!! Absolutely shocking. The song would eventually be a top 10 when used in a remix in 2005.

********My Number One Song of 1983 and ever!!*************
The Lotus Eaters - First Picture Of You
When you are 12 just started high school you spent a lot of time in melancholy, well I did. I had a brilliant summer and that was all about to end. That summer I had my first proper kiss and almost a girlfriend. She dumped me because i got glasses. I realise now they were a bad style but what did I know. I really then lost all confidence and when I started high school, I was not the same kid I was in Primary 7. I guess we have all been there. Through all that I had Lotus Eaters, A song of hope and love that I instantly fell in love with from a clip of the video on TOTP. I basically just buried myself with music and this was the song that really started it.
Now the song itself it was classic indie pop before I even knew what it was. Perfect vocals and just this sound that just makes me cry even today. From here I really should have become an Indie fan but that wasn't to be,yet, if I had found the Smiths in 1983 I think things woudl have been a lot different. I really think I would have found myself sooner. I had a 'Smiths' shaped hole in my life! One indie band will come to my rescue in 1984 wait and see who they are although we have had them already. Also attached the gorgeous 12 " mix. Oh almost forgot it reached #15 in the UK.

Now that is that I call a perfect conclusion to the list. And one of the few singles of the year to top the one at no 2 here also....

100 Hyperactive! – Thomas Dolby
It was hard to ignore Thomas Dolby in the early 80s as his videos were so crazy but he never had as much chart success as you though, only having one top 20 in the UK which of course was this song. This reached #17 in the UK but only #62 in the US after his huge hit with 'She Blinded Me With Science'. To be honest I prefer his 90s songs from ' Astronauts & Heretics'.

99 I Want A New Drug - Huey Lewis & The News
Did Ray Parker Jnr steal this for 'Ghostbusters' very probably but as we know Huey Lewis wasn't a saint either when it came to copying other songs. But yes 'Wonderin' what to do One that makes me feel like I feel when I'm with you' really does sound like the 'Bustin makes me feel good' and the sax break gawd really. This reached #6 in the US.

98 Yah-Mo Be There – James Ingram & Michael McDonald
I must admit I absolutely love Michael McDonald's voice, expect to see him very high in the 1986 list. But both vocals are great on this and it is so damn catchy. It reached #19 in the US and would reach #12 in the UK on re-issue in 1985.

97 Rock You Like a Hurricane – Scorpions
I love the bottom 10 on these lists as it is always so varied. This was a song i didn't know at the time but as my sister moved away from teeny bop music, she got into heavy rock and i found The Scorpions on one of her rock compilations. Much better than that dreadful ballad in the 90s. This reached #25 in the US and just #78 in the UK.
