96 So. Central Rain – R.E.M.
Another entry for an early R.E.M track and like all the ones so far, I know it from 'Eponymous'. This reached #85 in the US.

95 Borderline – Madonna
From a future megaband to a future megastar, Lets welcome Madonna to my Top 100s. You will be seeing her a lot over the next 5 years and with some very high placings. This song would be a much bigger in 1986 where it would reach #2 in the UK but for no win 1984 she had to settle for her first top 10 in the US. Every hot girl in my year at school wanted to be like her, I never released how much until I saw this video.

94 Forever Young – Alphaville
First appearance for this German rock group, it is just a timeless song that has been covered many times, again more pending apocalypse cheer as we have to come to expect in these years. So shocked at these chart positions #65 in the US and #98!!!!! in the UK but it was huge in the rest of Europe.

93 Rattlesnakes – Lloyd Cole and the Commotions
Been all over the world so far so nice to come back to an act from Scotland. Think he was a bit too clever for me at the time but he is now one of my favourite acts ever. This was just a minor hit, he will get bigger. This just reached #65.

92 Like To Get To Know You Well – Howard Jones
Yes a bit low but its a tough year. This has two videos! Lets forget the stylish US video and watch the happy UK one that i remember although its a bit quiet. This reached #4 in the UK and #49 in the US.

90 Highly Strung - Spandau Ballet
Another good year for Spandau Ballet, nice to play this one as it gets overlooked I think. They have one more to come in 1984. This reached #14 in the UK.

88 Kiss Me – Stephen Duffy
Founder member of Duran Duran decides to get some of the limelight. We are are playing the superior 85 remix but as I charted this in 1984 retro chart, it needs to go here. Stephen Duffy will continue to have a cult following in various projects to this day. It will reach #4 in the UK.

87 Let's Hear It for the Boy – Deniece Williams
This must be officially one of the most Eighties 80s song ever. Taken from the movie 'Footloose' it is such an uplifting track. I think this track laid the ground work for my future Janet Jackson/Five Star fandom. It was a US number one and peaked at #2 in the UK.

86 Eyes Without A Face - Billy Idol
While making these lists I have reappraised Billy Idol. My sister was a huge fan and I kind of discounted him. But he has so many great songs you forget including this ballad. taken from his 'Rebel Yell' album it was his first top 10 hit in the Us reaching #4 and went to #18 here.

85 Hard Habit to Break - Chicago
Its like a timewarp playing Chicago after the last few songs, they really seem to be a from a different time now but never write them off as their mastery of the power ballad has no limits and this is as fine a song as they have ever done. They still have another to come in 1985. This reached #3 in the US and #8 in the UK.

83 Skin Deep – The Stranglers
These early-mid 80s years of The Stranglers are by far my favourite of their era, They had so many different sounds but they were still identifiable as Stranglers that makes a special band. This synth pop track did pretty well reaching #15 in the UK.

82 Stay – The Blue Nile
Now a track from one of my all time favourite albums 'A Walk Across The Rooftops', if you ever want music to play as you walk home from a night out at 3AM, it is this record. Just turn it up and just suck in the quality. This song and album was really not appreciated at the time but over the years built up such a following that their followup album almost went top 10. Thank you Anne Nightingale for introducing me to this brilliant Scottish band. This reached #97 in the UK.

81 Love & Pride – King
Wow what a contrast. Any DJ that follows Blue Nile up with King would be sacked I think. This track is brilliantly colourful and will be a much bigger hit in 1985. Really one of the defining songs of the mid 80s. Bonkers video as well, a video clever enough to add your bands gimmick for all the girls to copy, very clever.. The song will be a number 2 hit in 1985 and reach #55 in the US.

I didn't even know the Lotus Eaters' track which you have at number one for 1983.
It's, er, ok... Am I missing something?

Music can all be about timing and place and yeh in 2018 it probably just sounds like a nice Indie track something Keane would do say if you heard it for the first time but in 1983 it was fresh and it just registered big with me. You will find I am not the only one it is a much loved song for.

99 I Want A New Drug - Huey Lewis & The News
Did Ray Parker Jnr steal this for 'Ghostbusters' very probably but as we know Huey Lewis wasn't a saint either when it came to copying other songs. If you're referring to Do You Believe In Love, that wasn't a song he wrote, it was written by Robert Mutt Lange. But it does totally rip off "Sweet Talkin' Woman" by ELO.

That's a good version of Forever Young by Alphaville - at least they did something different.
Hmmm, wonder if anythong else by them might appear higher up the list.
