That's a good version of Forever Young by Alphaville - at least they did something different. Hmmm, wonder if anythong else by them might appear higher up the list. I think that was always going be likely

82 Stay – The Blue NileNow a track from one of my all time favourite albums 'A Walk Across The Rooftops', if you ever want music to play as you walk home from a night out at 3AM, it is this record. Just turn it up and just suck in the quality. This song and album was really not appreciated at the time but over the years built up such a following that their followup album almost went top 10. Thank you Anne Nightingale for introducing me to this brilliant Scottish band. This reached #97 in the UK. Totally agree, great track from a great album.

80 What's Love Got to Do with It – Tina Turner
Think this probably my favourite Tina Turner song, reading here it was originally meant for Cliff Richard can you imagine? Would he have had US number in the 80s with it we will never know.. It peaked at #3 here.

79 I Want To Break Free - Queen
First of two songs for Queen in my 1984 list, with one of the most famous videos of the year and the one to come is very good as well in a completely different way. It reached #3 in the UK and #45 in the US.

78 Master and Servant - Depeche Mode
Not one of my favourites of the early 80s singles but even still think it should be a little higher. I possibly have overdone Mode lately hehe They were of course one of my favourite bands at the time. It reached #8 in the UK and #87 in the US.

77 Smalltown Boy – Bronski Beat
Now for a song i really didn't appreciate at the time. As you can imagine the Scottish Highlands wasn't the most open minded place. And you woudl have been thoroughly beaten up for liking Bronski Beat. Even many of the bands i admitted to liking at the time was enough for me to get gay abuse. In these more enlightened times we can appreciate the quality of this track, lyrically, production wise and of course Jimmys unique voice. This reached #3 in the Uk and #48 in the US.

76 Up On The Catwalk - Simple Minds
Only entry for the Simple Minds in this top 100 and a really badly formatted video on Vevo sorry. Not one of their very best but not bad either. It reached #27 in the UK.

75 The Wild Boys - Duran Duran
First of two songs in the top 100 for them. This of course as an amazing video which must have cost a fortune then. It was a number two hit both sides of the Atlantic.

74 The Lebanon – The Human League
A little bit low this as it is one of my favourite Human League songs. It is one of their most guitar based tracks which reached #11 in the UK and #64 in US.

73 Young at Heart – The Bluebells
Another great new band from Scotland , this was a sizeable hit at the time reaching #8 but it will go onto be a much bigger hit in the 90s reaching #1 in 1993.

72 Where Were You Hiding When The Storm Broke ? – The Alarm
Second top 40 hit single from the Alarm and definitely one of my favourites of theirs. It reached #22.

71 Nelson Mandela - The Specials
Known as The Special AKA and of course called 'Free Nelson Mandela' at the time, it was a very successful political tack that really got the message across to the whole country. It reached #9 in the UK.

Smalltown boy would easily be in my top 10 songs of the eighties.

70 Holiday – Madonna
The first Madonna song I heard probably the same for most people and at this point there was still no clues that she was going to be megastar as its just a happy summer pop song. It reached #6 this year but was re-issued in 1985 and reached #2. It peaked at #16 in the US.

69 Illegal Alien - Genesis
Now we have a No Limits powerplay and a very non PC video now, the Youtube whiners going on about how offensive this is song and video is, It was a strange subject for a song for them but really white guys dressing up as Mexicans it was hardly a rare thing in the 80s. It reached #16 in UK and #44 in US.

68 Do They Know It's Christmas? - Band Aid
Quite hard to critique both a charity and a Christmas record but taking the song on its on merits I think this is a very fair position. Ignoring the cultural and world impact of this song it was a great catchy song as well. Number one all over the world of course.

67 Pearly-dewdrops' Drops – Cocteau Twins
As you will see in 1984-1986, I had three main influences in my music taste. TV Shows like Entertainment USA/No Limits/Americas Top 10 with Casey Kasem, the top 40 itself and Anne Nightingale. This was another song I discovered via Anne Nightingale. I loved her show she would ease you in gently from the top 40 and then with in an hour, you would have discovered a new favourite song. Probably their most famous song and shocking that I don't really own much by them, my wife has 'Heaven Or Las Vegas'. This reached #19 in the UK but was an big Indie chart number one.

66 Seven Seas – Echo & the Bunnymen
Another Anne Nightingale band and song as I have already said one of my favourite alternative bands of the 80s. This reached #16 in the Uk and taken from the album 'Ocean Rain'.

65 Somebody's Watching Me - Rockwell
Back to the pop music and this one of those songs I loved from the 80s but i had no idea who did it until about 15 years ago. I thought it was Michael Jackson but it couldn't be. It turns out of course he was on backing vocals to Rockwell who sang/rapped the main verses but really its the Jackson chorus we love as well as that killer bass line. It reached #2 in the Us and #6 in the UK. A Halloween perennial now.

64 Wonderland – Big Country
No we have a brilliant stand alone single from Big Country, this maybe should be 20-30 places higher but maybe as it wasn't on 'The Crossing' it didn't get the same love. But leaving off the album certainly helped as it was now their biggest hit reaching #8 in the UK and #86 in the US.
