49 Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie – Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie
Highest entry for them in 1988 we will see a lot more of them next year. this is their first major label single, never realised 'The Rattler' first came out in 1986 and was a indie top 10 hit. This reached #62 in the UK.

48 Halleluiah Man – Love & Money
Another Scottish band who also never got as big as they deserved. This was the first single taken from the 'Strange Kind Of Love' album, so we will also hear more from it in 1989. This song reached #63 in 1988.

47 Mandinka – Sinéad O'Connor
The best and my favourite song by Sinead O'Connor also the only one I ever bought, although I do somehow have 'Nothing Compares To You' as well. Released at the end of 1987, it became a hit in early 1988 after the video was issued and reached #17 in the UK.

46 Everywhere – Fleetwood Mac
Probably the song that still gets the most airplay out of this batch. By now I had completely fallen in love with Fleetwood Mac, 'Tango In The Night' was one of my most played albums of the year. This still is one of their very best songs. It reached #4 in the UK, their biggest hit here since the Sixties and #14 in the US.

45 You Made Me Realise EP - My Bloody Valentine
I admit in 1988 I still wasn't quite ready for these guys, they were this weird noise I would hear in the Chart Show Indie Top 10 but by 1990 they were one of my favourite bands. I guess it was just so different to anything else in 1988, it sticks out a mile here. But its just a beautiful racket. The whole EP which I discovered through my wife is even better. The Creation EP contains the song I am named after. The EP was a number two in the Indie chart.

44 Desire – U2
The first single taken from 'Rattle & Hum' and U2's first number one. It maybe didn't deserve to be their first number one but it is a really good single. It was a chart topper all over the world and reached #3 in he US.

43 Chocolate Girl – Deacon Blue
Another hit for Deacon Blue who are fast becoming one of the biggest bands in the UK certainly as a live act. They really are a phenomenon in Scotland now. Not one of my first choices for a single release but I wont complain about another minor hit for them. It is still rather lovely though, still so fresh. It reached #43 in 1988.

42 Crystal Palace – The Bible
The Bible return in 1988 with a new album 'Eureka' this was one of the best tracks but not the best that is still to come in 1989. This reached #82 in the UK.

41 We Care A Lot – Faith No More
Now for something completely different from a new funk rock band from California. This was faith No Mores first hit single with their original vocalist Chuck Mosley. They had been around a long time but this MTV hit broke them across the world. It reached #53 in the UK.

40 Jennifer She Said – Lloyd Cole and the Commotions
One bonus song in this batch, the best track on their new album 'Mainstream'. It is classic Lloyd Cole and should have been huge. It was his last hit with the band reaching #31 in the UK.

39 The Dead Heart - Midnight Oil
For some reason I didn't buy 'Beds Are Burning' at the time but I did buy this, I know mad. I guess it was just less obvious and 'Beds Are Burning' had so much airplay you hardly had to buy it. It reached #68 in the UK and #53 in the US.

38 Karla With A K – The Hooters
Another song that was a followup hit to a band that had finally scored their first UK top 40 hit. Much more Cajun than 'Satellite' but almost as catchy. But not even a Carling Black Label campaign was enough to get this song into the top 40 as well. It reached #81 in the UK.

37 Devil Inside – INXS
My favourite band T-Shirt in 1988 was my 'Devil Inside' T-Shirt. I got really sad when it got ripped It was one of the best songs on the album and just so sleazy good but it under performed in the UK only getting to #47. It was a number two hit in the US. Are we going to get any hits in this batch?

36 Should've Known Better – Richard Marx
No not yet. Richard Marx 2nd single and the first thing I ever bought of his but I then bought the album as well. Just a perfect AOR track, for me its so timeless just a special song to me. The Us loved this and it reached #3 there but the UK are being very slow to appreciate him and he misses the top 40 again peaking #50 but hey hes getting closer.

35 I Think We're Alone Now – Tiffany
When we get a hit in this batch we don't do it by half, MCA's answer to Debbie Gibson comes quick and fast another young female pop star taking advantage of the lack of Madonna in this year. Not as cute as Debbie and she releases a cover and other peoples songs, lets say Team Debbie wasn't that impressed. But say what you like this was a great single and the only time you will see Tiffany on these lists. This was a worldwide smash hit, chart topping in the US and UK.

34 Don't Call Me Baby – Voice Of The Beehive
Back to the underachievers and VOTB were certainly that, every single they released of this debut album was brilliant but finally they cracked the top 40 with this. It reached #15 in the UK. Probably my favourite singles act of 1988.

33 Buffalo Stance – Neneh Cherry
Many of these songs you will never hear on the radio anymore but this one you will. It is truly timeless in fact so ahead of its time we all didn't fully appreciate i. I think we realised it was something special just not that it would be a template for pop music for the next 30 years. So much music in the top 40 today pays a huge debt to this song, Stefflon Don for sure. Its just infectious, trendy, cool and just pop perfection. It reached #3 in the UK and the US.

32 Love Bites – Def Leppard
Oh its been a while since we had a power ballad and here is one of the best ever. Def Leppard have never done a ballad as good as this since. A rock band at the top of their game and their biggest hit in the US reaching number one. It reached #11 in the UK.

31 The King of Rock 'N' Roll – Prefab Sprout
This is really a section for underachievers but this Summer Prefab Sprout scored a proper top 10 pop hit, with this slightly comical song and video about Elvis. They actually still have a song to come that is even better which missed the top 40. It reached #7 in the UK.

30 Under the Milky Way – The Church
We start the top 30 with one of those songs that people think was a bigger hit than it was. Although it was a minor hit in the US and UK, it somehow still gets played today and features in many tv shows and movies. One of the best alternative pop records of the 80s and just so atmospheric, it has somehow become a bit of a classic. It even makes bagpipes cool. It reached #22 in the Us and a down right shocking #90 in the UK. I really think it was lack of airplay as I probably didn't appreciate it at the time either although I am sure it made my chart.
