69 I Get Weak – Belinda Carlisle
Also returning is another entry for Belinda Carlisle with her followup single to 'Heaven Is a Place On Earth' which pretty much treads the same path. It got as high as #2 in the US and reached #10 in the UK, it was another Diane Warren song.

68 Foolish Beat – Debbie Gibson
Fourth single from Debbie Gibson, this time its the big ballad. It was of course a number one in my chart at the time but has dropped back over the years. It was also a US number one and got to #9 in the UK.

67 Destroy The Heart – The House of Love
We return to the Indie charts with one of the best new bands around, The House of Love. A huge indie band that never really crossed over to the success that was expected from them. This was their first top 100 hit reaching #76.

66 Answer Me – The Silencers
1988 was totally the year of The Silencers for me where they released a brace of brilliant singles, think they were the first band that I started buying everything buy. The Scottish band were of course huge in Scotland and bizarrely France but never got the big hit they deserved in the main chart. This reached #89 in the UK.

65 All Fired Up - Pat Benatar
Pat Benatar returns in 1988 with a harder sound and the first single I ever bought of hers as she follows the trend of hair rock moving away from AOR, she even has her hair long now hehe. This move in style also did well for in the UK as this single reached #19 here the same position it got to in the US. Her biggest hit in the UK in 5 years.

64 Oh Patti (Don't Feel Sorry for Loverboy) – Scritti Politti
Scritti Politti make an unexpected return with one of the best songs they ever did. It really is one of the most gorgeous pop songs ever so underrated. The whole album though has a range of styles moving closer to dance music. This single reached #13 in the UK but did not manage to continue their US success.

63 I See Red – The Silencers
More Silencers this time with a more uptempo indie rock sound. I am really remembering how much I loved this band as I play each song. I can see why this wasnt a top 40 as it is a little bit too alternative for the time but it still sounds brilliant. I still love that line about 'Sex in prison molotovs' hehe. No 93 in the UK.

62 What's on Your Mind (Pure Energy) - Information Society
One of the best pop songs of 1988 and a classic late 80s example of synth pop. Although I think we had moved on in the UK and a band that sounded like Heaven 17 with samples was going to struggle against the new sounds in dance music here. But the USloved this. It reached #3 in the Us but just #81 here.

61 European Rain – The Big Dish
More underated Scottish bands, this time a band from Airdrie. They have been releasing great singles for a couple of years now but still not managed to break big nationally. Maybe a record label in the future might help them get that hit they deserve. This reached #78 in the UK.

60 Drowning In The Sea Of Love – The Adventures
One band who finally got that break were The Adventures who scored their first top 40 in 1988. This was the follow up to that mega song which just fell a little short of the top 40 reaching #44.

59 Careless Love – Swimming With Sharks (Humpe und Humpe)
Here is another song I discovered because Gary Davies made it record of the week. Two sisters from Germany who went by the name Humpe & Humpe in Mainland Europe. Their name was changed for the UK for obvious reasons. Maybe it would have got them more noticed and this single would have gone top 40 like it deserved. Although top 20 across Europe it only manged #63 here.

58 Endless Summer Nights – Richard Marx
One of my favourite Richard Marx songs but it probably has dated more than any of his other hits, the tinny production has not carried well. It is still a brilliant song though just so much better live. This was now Richard Marx's biggest hit in the US and he was getting to the equivalent of Beiber status over there. It reached #2 in the US but he missed the top 40 again here getting to #50.

57 Martha's Harbour – All About Eve
It was not my favourite song of theirs at the time, it was a bit to slow but I was really glad they finally had a mainstream hit though. Sadly it also combined with this cringey TOTP appearance, poor girl. It reached #10 in the UK.

56 I Don't Mind At All – Bourgeois Tagg
One of the best one hit wonders of 1988. This very Beatlesesque song rose above pastiche but just being a brilliant emotional song that I think Lennon/McCartney woudl have been happy with if they wrote it themselves. The song got to #38 in the Us and slightly better in the UK where it reached #35.

55 Lucretia My Reflection – Sisters of Mercy
For me this was the stand out track from the 'Floodland' album, it has such a brilliant drum beat and bassline and its just so powerful. They really were the best goth band ever and I think they don't get enough credit these days although I know 6Music still play them. It reached #20 in the UK, can you imagine that now?!

54 Copperhead Road – Steve Earle
As promised earlier here comes the song that broke Steve Earle into the mainstream. Leaning more into rock than pure country, it managed to attract Radio 1 airplay and gave him his biggest selling album and single in the UK. The single reached #45 in the UK.

53 Love Is Contagious – Taja Sevelle
Sometimes a pop song comes along that just has something special. Ok it may have a bit of a Sade influence but she just takes things further for me. Yes I only just got the Sade thing now funny how time changes your perspective. This gorgeous summery pop song was a number 7 hit in early 1988, I am sure it woudl have been even bigger later in the year.

52 Painted Moon – The Silencers
I really wanted this higher up this list as it was a number one twice in my chart and is the signature song by them but really it's so close to the top 50 I just can't do it, their is nothing I don't want in my top 50 these songs are all very special. This was the song that should have given them a top 40 hit in the Uk and it maybe sold more than some songs that were but anyway it reached #57, it also got to #82 in the US on re-issue.

51 Hands To Heaven – Breathe
This is a difficult song for me as it reminds me of a very 'interesting' night in my life. Let's say some nice things happened and some very embarrassing things as well, so glad their was no social media in 1988 that's all I will say hehe . If any of you have watched 13 Reasons Why, this would have been one of mine ....Yes it is a very romantic song and Breathe were a really good poop band who were looking like becoming stars for a few years now and after this finally be a huge hit in the UK and US, they will have a few more hits before disappearing again. It got to #2 in the US and #4 in the UK a welcome return of classic pop to the uppper reaches of the chart.

50 Piano In The Dark – Brenda Russell
Wow two really slow love songs in a row. This is one of my favourite soul songs ever and I think she had one of the best voices and its sad that was never as big a star as she deserved. Its such an emotional song that you can listen to in two levels must admit I missed the more sexual translation of this and at 16 I literally thought he was just a good piano player lol. It reached #23 in the UK and #6 in the US.
