87 Hungry Eyes – Eric Carmen
In 1986 we had 'Danger Zone' a massive soundtrack seller but not a top 40 hit in its own right and now we have an even bigger one. By far the best song on the Dirty Dancing soundtrack but it just never sold in enough numbers in one week to chart in the UK. It must be one of the biggest non top 75 sellers ever but there is one even bigger still to come, the biggest non top 75 hit ever pre the download era anyway. This peaked at #4 in the US and only #82 in the UK.

86 Wild Wild West – The Escape Club
Another massive US hit that flopped in the UK, the only explanation is that it had a distribution problem as everyone I know at school loved this song but nowhere seemed to sell it. It also didn't get much radio play apart from Atlantic 252. They are the only British act to have a US number one and never have a hit of any kind in the UK. It even has a ragga bit, maybe it was a bit ahead of its time for the UK.

85 Don't Go – Hothouse Flowers
As mentioned earlier this song flopped on first issue but got a massive boost when they sang it on Eurovision definitely one of the most credible acts ever to be on it even just as a guest. I really liked this song but there was many more Irish bands I would have rather had that opportunity. It would eventually get to #11 in the UK.

84 Open Your Arms – Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie
First appearance on these lists for one of the best Scottish bands ever. They were just too cool for 1988 I think, blending rock, pop, indie, punk, goth and new wave, you just cannot put them any category. This single got to #92 in the UK.

83 A Little Respect – Erasure
Possibly Erasure's most famous song, I think this should be higher tbh. It is just a perfect synth pop song. It reached #4 in the UK and #14 in the US.

82 I Want Your Love – Transvision Vamp
I will start of my saying I really struggle listening to Transvision Vamp in 2018 but in 1988 I loved them. I played 'Velveteen' to death. They basically take C86 indie pop and merged it with glam rock and just turned up the pop to the maximum. You can't argue with how catchy it is, it reached #5 in the US.

81 Mad About You – Belinda Carlisle
Re-issued after the success of Belinda Carlisle 'Heaven On Earth' this track from her debut album is pretty decent as well., It reached#3 in the Us and #67 in the UK.

80 When It's Love - Van Halen
1988 was the year when I started to get cooler friends who were in rock bands and one of them lend me this album. With its 'hilarious' album title OU812 ....tumbleweeds.... Anyway this tune is awesome especially the album version. I actually prefer Van Halen without Dave Lee Roth as he was a bit annoying. This single got to #5 in the US and #28 in the UK.

79 Ordinary Angel – Hue and Cry
Hue & Cry are back with new music already in 1988 and this is the first single of probably their best album 'Remote'. I was a little disappointed that it didn't make the top 40 but again listening now, it did really well for the sound it has. I think there are bigger singles on the album to come. This peaked at #42 in the UK.

Never that keen on Belinda Carlisle's Mad About You but I'm actually beginning to like it now. You would have expected it to do better in the UK on its re-release. Interestingly Kingpin had intended to use this in the final of HF3 - would have been interesting - there have been a few favourable comments about it.

Interestingly Kingpin had intended to use this in the final of HF3 - would have been interesting - there have been a few favourable comments about it. I think I'd intended to use Mad About You much earlier in the contest but bottled it, I just didn't know how it would be received. I'd certainly never planned on it as a track for the final...yes, the response would have been interesting! I love that debut album, it's a great pop record and a real departure from the Go-Go's. I must have forgotten that Mad About You was re-released here in 1988, I thought it had never charted in the UK. I really must give that album another listen, it's been a while.

78 Kidney Bingos – Wire
Another band I discovered through The Chart Show and also Snub TV. I was really starting to get into more Indie in 1988. I never knew that the band had been around for years and years. This reached #88 in the main UK chart.

77 Hazy Shade of Winter – The Bangles
I have never been a fan of Simon & Garfunkel really but I absolutely loved this single. taken from the brat pack movie 'Less Than Zero', it reached #13 in the US and just #30 in the UK.

76 Freak Scene – Dinosaur Jr.
A new sound was starting to appear in the underground, a new kind of grungey sounding rock and one of the first bands I heard in that genre were Dinosaur Jnr. Not really counted as a true Grunge band as they aren't from Seattle but they certainly had many of the sounds in their music. It was a top 10 hit in the Indie chart were it got to #7.

75 Look Out Any Window - Bruce Hornsby, The RangeSecond single taken from Bruce Hornsby's new album 'Scenes From The Southside' with still very much his trademark sound. If it ain't broke don't fix it, which is certainly true of Bruce Hornsby as I went of him when he stopped playing so much piano It peaked at #35 in the US and #88 in the UK.

74 Out of Reach – The Primitives
We have already had The Darling Buds they other C86 girl fronted Indie band that went big in 1988 were The Primitives. I had a big crush on Tracy Tracy, I take it so far that it moved onto a girl in my school who looked just like her. Can't get an official video for this so her is a TOTP performance it reached #25 in the UK.

73 Sideshow – Wendy & Lisa
The followup to the brilliant 'Waterfall' but still a great single as well. Still just missing the top 40 though this time they only got to #49.

72 Angel Of Harlem – U2
'Rattle & Hum' may have been patchy but it did include some great singles like this one. Kind of a Xmas single it reached #9 in the UK and #14 in the US.

71 Tell It to My Heart – Taylor Dayne
Some pure pop now definitely one of the catchiest songs of 1988 and continuing the trend for me that the US was doing better pop than the UK right now. It peaked at #3 in the UK and #7 in the US.

70 Every Angel – All About Eve
Another entry for the goth band and this one is a bit heavier. A bit of a curiosity the video was never finished but YouTube being what it is, we have it here. It reached #30 in the UK.
