A couple of interesting rule changes for next season, after the IFAB meeting on Saturday.
You won't be able to score rebounds from penalties next season, it will be just like a penalty shootout. There seems to be some uncertainty about what will happen if the penalty comes back off the woodwork or the keeper saves it though. I heard this and thought of all the penalty rebounds Reading scored from 2 seasons ago to make the playoffs!
If the penalty came back off the woodwork you wouldn't be able to directly score from it anyway, that has always been the rule.

I suppose that change is one way of preventing players encroaching at penalties. Now we just need the rules for goalkeepers to be enforced properly, particularly in matches with VAR.

Anyone else remember that game where one team had a penalty to score and go up, it hit the bar, and the other team went down the other end and scored to go up. One of the most exciting moments in football, this rule will take that possibility away. I really dont understand the need for this to be brought in? It's not a penalty shoot out if it's in the middle of the game!

The penalty changes aren't happening and weren't discussed at the meeting. For some reason Sky Sports reported it and the story spread. The only change to the rules regarding penalties is that goalkeepers will only have to have one foot on the goal line.

They changed the rule so that the player stepping up to take the penalty is not allowed to stop (waiting for the keeper to dive so he'll know where to put it, or to encroach so they can claim a retake if he saves it).
I heard about changes from free-kicks about attackers not being able to stand near the wall. I think that is nonsense, there is no formal definition of a "wall", it is just a defensive strategy.
I think changing the rule so you can't be offside directly from a free kick would be good. That means Harry Kane would have been onside in both those decisions last week.
However the attackers would not be able to impede the goalkeeper which would be a separate issue.

Yeah, I was talking to Sam about this last night, and he eventually found out the penalty thing wasn't true, thank goodness, would have been a daft decision! No wonder Sky reported it without checking the facts...

Yeah odd Sky reported it
I like the freekick rule, there is no need for attackers to foul the wall, lie down behind them, push, pull and be a pest, back when there was sportsmanship this was unthinkable even for hatchet men, its unsporting so I'm glad they are making it against the rules

After all they've already dived to get the free kick on the edge of the box...

Unbelievably Man Utd have beaten PSG 3-1 and so go through to the Champions League quarter finals on the away goals rule.

No wonder Sky reported it without checking the facts... Tbh, i'm blaming Dermot Gallagher rather than Sky. He was talking about it on Talksport on Monday night and it seemed as though it was him who brought it up in the first place when he was on TV that day (which i'm guessing was on Sky). He seemed sure it was happening, so no idea how he could get it so wrong, rather embarrassing really.

JANUARY 2018 TRANSFER WINDOWHENRIKH MKHITARYAN: Manchester Utd to Arsenal Exchange DealPlayed 40 matches; scored 9 goals. He has started most of the games he has featured in, rather than making substitute appearances, and has contributed a healthy number of goals for an attacking midfielder. (Indeed, his goals per game ratio is almost 2x that of Alexis Sanchez). But Arsenal are only a barely improved team over the 13 month period in question, which suggests he hasn’t made a great difference. Verdict: REASONABLE SUCCESS I think 'barely improved' may look a tad harsh come the end of the season. We're on 57 points with 9 games to go, and our total for the whole of last season was 63 points - so barring a late collapse, we'll eclipse that by some margin. The league table isn't looking a lot rosier at the moment, but the standard overall is a lot higher - it looks like even sixth place will be on about 70-75 points, and 80 points may be needed to reach the top 4, which would be the highest total ever. As for Mickey himself, he started off pretty well, but his form dipped a bit in the first part of last season though. Since he came back from injury though, he's been much better. I went to the Bournemouth game last week, which was one of his best performances. I still think we need a wide attacking player, but our main area for investment is obviously the defence.

Also, what does everyone think about what is going on at Bolton?
Training ground was closed on Monday as no food and no power. Their game against Millwall on Saturday was in danger of being cancelled as the stadium could have lost it's safety certificate with matchday staff/stewards not being paid. Also, winding up order in couple of weeks or so.
I did wonder selfishly how this would affect Reading if their results were expunged but it seems none of the bottom 6 have actually beaten them this season! Though not every team has played them twice yet like we have. I'm just shocked their mess is this bad as I thought they were on the verge of a takeover.
