Grid for Abu Dhabi: 1 Vettel 2 Hamilton 3 Alonso 4 Button 5 Webber 6 Massa 7 Barrichello 8 Schumacher 9 Rosberg 10 Petrov 11 Kubica 12 Kobayashi 13 Sutil 14 Heidfeld 15 Hulkenberg 16 Liuzzi 17 Alguersuari 18 Buemi 19 Trulli 20 Kovalainen 21 Glock 22 di Grassi 23 Senna 24 Klien This is Red Bull's 15th pole position of the season - equalling the record achieved by McLaren in 1988 and 1989, and by Williams in 1992 and 1993 (although these were all in 16-race seasons). Vettel is the first driver to achieve 10 pole positions in a season since M Schumacher achieved 11 (from 17 races) in 2001.

This weekend sees the final round of the GP2 season (a whole 2 months after the previous round in Monza). Josef Kral returns to Super Nova in place of Luca Filippi, Ho-Pin Tung replaces Christian Vietoris at Racing Engineering, James Jakes replaces Alvaro Parente at Coloni, and Federico Leo replaces Edoardo Piscopo at Trident.
Initial grid for Abu Dhabi:
Pos Driver Team Time Gap 1. Oliver Turvey iSport 1m48.559s 2. Dani Clos Racing Engineering 1m49.035s + 0.476s 3. Sergio Perez Barwa Addax 1m49.081s + 0.522s 4. Federico Leo Trident 1m52.170s + 3.611s
Clos, Maldonado, d'Ambrosio, Bianchi, Bird, and van der Garde were all subsequently given 10-place penalties for ignoring the red light at the end of the pit lane - not entirely sure of the resulting grid.

Having asked the question on another forum, I believe the answer to be Kovalainen at Silverstone 2008.
Another statistic - this was apparently the first World Championship race to have 22 classified finishers since 1952 (and in those days a driver only needed to take the flag to be classified, regardless of how many laps they had driven)!

When was the last time that the man on pole got lapped? (Excluding non-finishes, obviously) No idea - but Hamilton came close in Japan 2008.

I wonder what will happen if Vettel is leading Webber at Abu Dhabi with Alonso back in (say) 6th? Can Red Bull possibly take the risk of all cars between them and Alonso dropping out/crashing (if Alonso finishes 3rd then Vettel cannot win the title, but Webber can with a win, whereas if Alonso only finishes 6th then either Red Bull can win the title with a victory)?

Somewhat spookily, last year's Brazilian GP saw a driver achieve his first pole in 5 years (the driver in question being both Hulkenberg's current team-mate and a driver whose first pole position came in similar circumstances to Hulkenberg's), whereas this year has seen a team manage their first pole in 5 years.

The Cosworth statement was slightly misleading - I was using statsf1.com, which only considers Cosworth as having competed in 2005, 2006, and 2010 - other names were used in earlier years.
Fisi was over 2 seconds faster than 2nd-place Trulli in Australia 2005 on the Saturday - he extended his advantage to nearly 3 seconds on the Sunday morning (times from the two sessions were added together for the first few races of 2005). Coincidentally, Trulli was also on the front row when Fisi managed his shock pole last year!

Grid for Brazil: 1 Hulkenberg 2 Vettel 3 Webber 4 Hamilton 5 Alonso 6 Barrichello 7 Kubica 8 Schumacher 9 Massa 10 Petrov 11 Button 12 Kobayashi 13 Rosberg 14 Alguersuari 15 Heidfeld 16 Liuzzi 17 Glock 18 Trulli 19 Kovalainen 20 Buemi (penalty from Korea) 21 di Grassi 22 Klien 23 Sutil (penalty from Korea) 24 Senna Perhaps surprisingly, this appears to be Cosworth's first ever pole position. Certainly the biggest surprise since Fisichella last year (and maybe even before that!).

Christian Klien is apparently due to return in place of Yamamoto for Brazil.

Possible results that will give Alonso the title in Brazil:
Alonso wins and: Webber finishes 5th or lower
Alonso finishes 2nd and: Webber finishes 8th or lower Hamilton finishes 4th or lower Vettel finishes 2nd or lower
Alonso finishes 3rd and: Webber does not score Hamilton finishes 5th or lower Vettel finishes 4th or lower
For Red Bull to clinch the Constructors' Championship, they need to outscore McLaren by at least 16 points, and for Ferrari not to outscore them by 9+ points.

Excellent race once it got going! Amazing how similar Vettel's retirement was to what happened in Bahrain (Brundle mentioning that the car sounded sick just before Vettel was passed for the lead by Alonso, and Massa and Hamilton both finishing on the podium).
Interesting to note that 4 of Alonso's 5 victories in 2010 have come in races where he led fewer than 20 laps (the exception being Singapore). Vettel, Webber and Button have all led more laps than Alonso this season.
And as for Red Bull failing to finish with either car despite locking out the front row - I believe the last time this happened was McLaren in Australia 2000 (it also happened to McLaren in Australia 1999).

Spookily it was exactly 6 years ago today (9th October 2004) that qualifying was last postponed to Sunday. On that occasion I seem to remember that the decision to postpone was made on the Friday (UK time).

Congratulations to Fernando Alonso for becoming the first driver since Michael Schumacher in Hungary 2004 to manage a 'grand slam' i.e. pole position, fastest lap, leading every lap, and winning.
Drivers who can still mathematically win the Drivers' Championship:
1 Webber 202 (first driver ever to score 200 points in a season!) 2 Alonso 191 3 Hamilton 182 4 Vettel 181 5 Button 177 6 Massa 128 7 Rosberg 122 8 Kubica 114
Only the top 5 have a realistic chance of winning, though.
Teams that can still mathematically win the Constructors' Championship:
1 Red Bull 383 2 McLaren 359 3 Ferrari 319
