1st March 1992
It's 2 weeks on top for 1969's Simon & Garfunkel classic, The Boxer, and Ian McCulloch gets his first top 10 in a few years and 10 years since Echo & The Bunnymen first popped up. Bryan Adams gets his biggest since THAT record topped the chart, top 20 this week as is Everything But The Girl's cover of Love Is Strange (previously covered by Echo & The Bunnymen) 8 years on from Each And Every One hitting 2 in my charts, and Massive Attack take Be Thankful into the 20 16 years on from William De Vaughan's fab original doing the same.
New entries include The Lightning Seeds returning at 51 for a proper run of hits 3 years after Pure didn't do that, with The Life Of Riley, that football backdrop fave. I wonder if they'll do a proper footie record.... Alison Limerick keeps a run of dance tracks going, Brand New Heavies keep a run of jazzfunk dance tracks going, and Pearl Jam announce they are Alive and part of the Seattle grunge scene too. Jeff Beck & Rod Stewart get together for a cover of Curtis Mayfield's soul classic 20 years since they first had a chart hit together, with a reissue of their 1968-ish flop I've Been Drinking. Zoe's back again, and so is Seal with Violet.

16th February 1974
It's a new entry at 1 for Queen's second chart entry, and the first of 3 acts who would turn up in 1974 and become long-term greats 50 years later and confounding the music critics of the time. ABBA and Sparks being the other two. Seven Seas Of Rhye got a slot on Top Of The Pops and it was a "wow" moment for me, instant number one. The THree Degrees are held off at 2, with another newie, their 4th, new in at 28 as lead act on the MFSB (Mother Father Sister Brother) Sound Of Philadelphia orchestra.
Barry Blue makes it a 4th chart entry with his 3rd top 20, the 50's teen pastiche ballad School Love which has a great melody and throwback appeal, Barry setting up his stall as intending to make each single very different from his previous singles - and anticipating the sort of ballads from Grease (charts-wise) musical which was already out and not making headlines. At 44 the third track off On The Third Day debuts for ELO at 44, new single Ma-Ma-Ma Belle, as they rock out, and so too, does Let Me Roll It for Wings on the 8th track from Band On The Run to chart here, new at 45.
Albert Hammond keeps the chart entries going with his US hit, I'm A Train at 71, and Elton John debuts the biggest-selling record of all-time. Sort of. It's Candle In The Wind, the original and better version, but B Side Bennie & The Jets has already hit number one here and will do so in the USA shortly, with Candle relegated to the B side. It's marginally maudlin, but not as much as the 1997 version for Princess Diana. I will stick with the Marilyn Monroe version, but I never rated it at the time and still don't. 50 years on I'm still p*ssed off Bennie wasn't the A side, until they re-issued it in 1976 as an oldie and got a minor hit out of it when it should have been a top 10 smash in 1974. Candle would also come back to haunt the charts in a live version.

19th Feb 1974 My actual charts of that week then
3rd week of all-change at the top, this time for Love Unlimited Orchestra. I still love it, reminds me of enforced Sunday family drives to Bristol Zoo and The American Museum near Bath, and listening to the chart rundown on the radio in the car on the way back. My beloved reel-to-reel tape recorder was in for repairs for most of Feb through April so I had to subsequently fill in gaps by buying as many singles as I could scrape pocket-money permitting (I babysat for other forces families for cash in those days when they fancied an evening out, and was popular as I was dependable, sensible and easily fobbed off with 50p rather than the more appropriate pound or two. That was the price of a new single, as it happens…)
Todd and Clifford make an early departure (enforced) while lots of chart activity a-goin’-on: Hudson Ford to 3, Ringo to 6, Charlie Rich at 8 and ELO 9 to make for a fresh Top 10. Roy Wood’s yonks-from-release Going Down The Road re-enters, while Brownsville Station re-enters due to UK chart success. New stuff, 60’s soul legends basically, Smokey Robinson's native american lament, The Temptations Eddie Kendricks (back in Chris Malinchak-sampled UK Top 40 this week), and The Four Tops, all flops in the UK where the much-slower singles chart was still stuffed with some of my earlier hits, or new entries like Alvin Stardust which had been in my charts for weeks, now at 2. Highest new entry, though, Robert Knight and his original of the British number from 1968 for Love Affair, following up B side chart hit Love On A Mountain Top. Nottingham TV-pushed band Paper Lace enter with future UK number one (and covered in the US too) bizarrely about dying in the American Civil War. We just don’t get songs about people and history anymore! That’s not a good thing, honest!

23rd February 1992
It's yet another oldie on top as the CD-single reactivated The Boxer tops my chart 23 years late for Simon & Garfunkel, a song I know every single word to. If only I could sing in tune. The KLF climb 10 and threaten a 4th chart-topper in a row with the What Time Is Love revamp that I prefer to the original hit version. Buffy Sainte-Marie gets a top 5 for the first time in 21 years, when Soldier Blue did the trick. Gary Moore climbs into the top 10 with a Cold Day In Hell as Blues undergoes a 90's revival, and Jacko sneaks a top 10 with Remember The Time under-performing by usual MJ standards.
Highest new entry is Julian Cope, 11 years on from Reward peaking at 2 for Teardrop Explodes, as he sings Lover times 3. At 34, ex-Spandau Tony Hadley has a solo entry for Lost In Your Love, and Tone is into his 12th year of charting. Rozalla flies back with another dance anthem, U2 drop an absolute classic ballad anthem in One, and Crowded House enter with their most-famous song Weather With You, the former also 11 years into the hits, the latter 12 years including Split Enz.
That leaves The Troggs unexpectedly staging an album comeback Athens Andover, and single entry at 70 with Don't You Know, actually their debut in my charts as their career predated my charting years. The album title refers to Andover, Reg Presley's UFO-cornfield-chasing home in the UK, and Athens Georgia where they recorded the album along with some local fans, REM, cough. River City People return, and Opus III insist it's a fine day.

12th February 1974
It's back up one place for a second week on top for The Hollies and the fab Air That I Breathe, with abrand new Philly disco breakthrough for The Three Degrees, on their 3rd retro chart entry, the fab Gamble & Huff Year Of Decision new in at 3. The new Supremes for the 70's basically. K.C. is up to 5, the first of many to do that no doubt, and bang in at 6 the movie of 1974, give or take the odd James Bond or Disaster movie, Blazing Saddles also being the movie theme of the year, forget The Sting, The Way We Were and even The Man With The Golden Gun - it's veteran Frankie Laine poker-faced belting out a 50's styled Western theme unaware it was a p*sstake, and a very naughty one at that. Brilliant.
Bowie drops his next musical morph at 17, and it's a Mick Ronson wicked riff, Rebel Rebel not a fave of mine at the time - the sudden style change was grating, much more Rolling Stones than Glam, but oddly I had no problem with Plastic Soul a year later, where most Bowie fans went apoplectic. It's a great single though. Barry White keeps pumping 'em out, his 4th on the rundown, with solo Honey Please Can't Ya See, a UK flop but I always liked it, new in at 46, while Sunny (of The Pearls, original Brotherhood Of Man, and backing singer for (deep breath) Dusty, Elton, Love Affair, Lulu, Mott The Hoople, Bowie, T.Rex, Tom Jones, Joe Cocker - see With A Little Help From My Friends - and 60's teen singer, Eurovision stage support to Lulu, and several other acts over the years into the 80's) finally egst a solo hit single with Doctor's Orders at 51.
The Staple Singers are back for a 5th or 6th time with a good track I didn't know before today, Touch A Hand at 60, Carpenters dip into Hank Williams' Jambalaya territory as they go off the boil a bit for me, at 70, Opportunity Knocks comedian Freddie Starr has a UK hit with It's You, a bit maudlin, but my Aunty Norma loves it, so I bunged it on a CD for her last year - not available anywhere to buy! She went to see him back in the day, and he was lead singer of 60's band The Midniters before he started making headlines "eating hamsters" and that sort of tat. Great at imitations of Elvis and the like in those days though.
Junior Walker returns for probably the last time with another sax-driven soul track new to me, and Ricky Wilde returns with another dad-created pre-teen track kiddie-pop oriented, Mrs. Malinski, which I liked at the time on one hearing, charted, and then never heard again for 50 years until today. It's OK, but a way better track is on the way!

My charts that week actual then
Mud climb to the top for the 3rd consecutive single (with Crazy peaking at 2 before that), that famous (in the UK) party classic that lads for once didn’t mind copying a dance to. Great stuff! Clifford and Hollies go Top 10, Todd Top 5, Aretha Top 20 and new entries: from Ringo Starr, covering a 50’s teen pop ballad to fun effect and a US Number One; Love Unlimited Orchestra, or the backing to soul girl group Love Unlimited, or Barry White essentially doing a gorgeous strings-based orchestral soul instrumental that also topped the US charts. I think it’s fairly clear that the American record buyer was doing a better job than the British singles buyer at this time, at least in terms of chart positions. Elsewhere a trio of worldwide flop singles (boo!) from The Tremeloes, now well out of step with the music scene, Neil Sedaka (not that he cared much given what happened next in his career) and Joni Mitchell (who was an albums artist anyway) and her fab Raised On Robbery.

Intrigued why people are charting the Allman Brothers - Jessica? Obviously I like it, but it wasn't a hit here and was a hit in the US in December 73? My charts are based on global release dates for anything at all just like my current charts for 2024 - but I also include my original charts from 1974 for info as they were exactly what I heard and liked at the time, regardless of what was in the UK charts. By then I was 16 and annoyed at stuff that wasn't getting to make the charts and a lot of MOR that that was charting

16th February 1992
It's up to the top spot for a belated 4th number one for Madness, 11 years after It Must Be Love peaked a bit lower than 1. Fellow oldie The Boxer also returns to give Simon & Garfunkel a second run in the top 5 23 years after I first charted it, aged 11. Another oldie, from 1991, is also back for another go, Crucified being big in Europe and not in the UK for Army Of Lovers, and top 10 again here. Buffy Sainte-Marie gets her first top 10 since 1971's Soldier Blue, with her fab The Big Ones Get away.
In a busy week for new entries, Gary Moore's bluesy Cold Day In Hell is an instant top 40 13 years on from Parisienne Walkways, Martika returns with some Coloured Kisses, and Everything But The Girl join the throng of covers of the 50's classic Love Is Strange, as they do a pretty good version of Mickey & Sylvia's still-charming original. Mike + The Mechanics get a second chance, Mike being 8 places behind himself in Genesis sitting at 50, that's just greedy. Diana Ross has a swift follow-up, ditto Amy Grant, and Naughty By Nature, while English band Pele debut Megalomania.
Inspiral carpets are Dragging Me Down, in a good way, Ronnie Jordan says So What, PM Dawn keep their run running with Reality Used To Be A Friend Of Mine (I think that's true for all of us these days), and Chic are back for a 3rd decade, with a spot of Chic Mystique over 20 years early for the Nile Rodgers 10's revival. I like to think I'm ahead of the times, but actually I'm just a lot more faithful to fave old pop stars than the fashion-chasing singles chart is. I don't care if something or someone is out of fashion with the Sound Of The Moment - even if I'm very into that Sound Of The Moment.

2nd February 1974
It's an album track I'd never heard until a week ago on top, Ian Matthews going three places higher than he did with Woodstock in 1970's Retro charts - and like that one, it's a terrific version of a great song. Heresy to say it, but it's way better than the Jackson Browne version released a few months earlier where he did a cover of a blues cover version as opposed to Nico's cover of his original unreleased song. This is more Nico, and sets up the definitive version from Glen Campbell in the mid 2000's. Talking of Glen, he's up into the 30 along with a bunch of other folk-ey/country-styled climbers, and T.Rex.
Alvin gets a second top 3 with Jealous Mind, I must say I'd never noticed the 10CC Rubber Bullets beat nicked before, hidden as it is amongst a lot of 50's throwback touches. Still sounds fresh. Disco has now formally arrived (though it'll take another 6 months to burst into the charts) with Howard K.C. Casey and his Sunshine Band new in at 10 with their 2nd UK hit single Sound Your Funky Horn out in the USA - his Rock Your Baby song-production gifted to George McRae really is Disco Ground Zero in chart-terms in the UK. Talking of disco, The First Queen Of Disco (until Donna Summer stole the title) was Gloria gaynor, and she debuts with Honey Bee at 73.
New at 33, The Trem's are back for an 8th Retro year in a row - Do I Love You wasn't a hit of course but it was on Lift Off With Ayshea I expect as I charted it at the time, and turns out 50 years on it sounds better than it did at the time. Joni Mitchell is also back to extend her retro run as lovely ballad Help Me, off newly-released Court And Spark (a fab album), is in at 38, and she's only just gone and finally appeared at the Grammy's 50 Years later. Hooray!
Roy Wood was Popstar Number One in Feb 1974, and Radio 1 had just done an interview/career span for the Move/ELO/Wizzard/solo/hit songwriter - I know this cos Roy gave a very early play of his latest future single Going Down The Road. He'd bought some bagpipes, and learned to play enough for a Scottish Reggae single (all instruments and voices Roy as per usual) and it had debuted instantly in my top 10 of the time 50 years ago this week. So, it might not be officially released, but it was played, I heard it, I loved it, I charted it, so it's here early too just as I would now for any track I heard ahead of release.
Pink Floyd make it a 4th retro chart entry with Dark Side track Us And Them, out in the USA, and composer Marvin Hamlisch charts Scott Joplin's 1920's ragtime piano tune, The Entertainer, courtesy of his soundtrack to hit movie The Sting - Robert Redford & Paul Newman back together again. 50 years ago this week, though, I was more interested in Mel Brook's US release of his Western parody Blazing Saddles, a 4th-wall-breaking, hip, madcap, social-commentating, naughty, rule-breaking, brilliant comedy masterpiece. Written by Richard Prior, he had an accident and couldn't star in the movie, which was great news for Cleavon Little who got the lead role as the black sheriff, bringing a lowkey charming cool to the part along with Gene Wilder's lowkey restrained gunfighter. Everything else was manic, it didn't need two manic leads! The theme tune will chart soon!
That leaves Gladys Knight dropping Best Thing That Ever Happened 18 months ahead of it's UK hit release, hitting in the USA now, and Lieutenant Pigeon popping back again for a Stavely Makepeace spin-off cover of the ancient Irish standard I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen. Also on Lift Off With Ayshea, I think, as I charted it briefly at the time and I don't recall Radio 1 playing it!

2nd February 1974 My charts of the week that actual week
3 weeks for Jet, Cher at 2, Suzi up to 4, and heading up a mini-invasion of new entries a new track from my hero Roy Wood. Not a single (and hit) for months, but those reggae bagpipes (all played by Roy of course) were off-the-wall fab to me and just beat out previous hero Marc Bolan with his first (and last) ballad single, the sprawling Teenage Dream.
At 14, no it’s not 1990, it’s 1974 and a high entry for non-UK hit The Joker. I like to think I’m ahead of the game at spotting hits but even so, 16 years!! Just behind The Hollies and their best-ballad, even though it had to wait until 1988 re-issue to hit my number one, it’s plaintive and emotional in a good way. Neil Young’s After The Goldrush gets a wonderful acapella treatment from Prelude, soft hippie cajun folkrock from Medicine Head, cajun stroprock from Brownsville Station (2 months ahead of charting), and sexy fabulous smooth soul from the great Barry White all entering.

9th February 1992
It's a climb of 14 to give Primal Scream a first chart topper since Loaded went top 10 in 1990, with the fab gospel vibes of Movin' On Up. That keeps Madness off the top spot as the revived It Must Be Love, the Labi Siffre cover, enters at 2, still great fun 11 years on. A film, meanwhile, helps The Temptations 1965 Motown classic My Girl to debut at 5, written by Smokey Robinson and covered by many, but none as good as the original.
James keep the top 10 run going as Born Of Frustration is up to 10, ahead of a plethora of new entries and a bit of a chart clearout, the highest new track enters at 32 for Tears For Fears and Laid So Low, ironically kicking out Feel So High, Des'ree plummeting. That's chart balance. Michael Bolton gets another decent single shock - Steel Bars new at 33. At 34, teenage Fanclub debut the terrific and under-rated What You Do For Me, as Texas drop in at 37 with Alone With You, one of their less-remembered songs, but me still supporting them as I do now, regardless of how they do chart-wise.
Massive Attack return at 38 with a cover of the 1974 William De Vaughan soul classic, Be Thankful (For What You've Got), which itself was inspired by Curtis Mayfield, and Timmy Thomas' 1972 classic Why Can't We Live Together, still hanging on in the chart - albeit the 1990 added-Martin-Luther-King-Jr remix that is still unavailable due to copyright issues. Tina Turner has a Love Thing, and 23 years of chart hits, Sounds Of Blackness are looking Optimistic, one of Bryan Adams' best ballads drops in at 60, Thought I'd Died And Gone To Heaven.
And down the bottom end of the chart, Take That debut with Once You've Tasted Love, and I can honestly say I don't recall charting it so early in their career, but there you go new at 72 ahead of Dream frequency's Feel So Real, a minor Julia Fordham return at 75 for 4 years of chart action, and as they top my Playlisted non-chart tracks of the week, Michael Jackson's 2 album tracks that I most rated at 76 and 77, Will You Be There and Heal The World eventually became singles (and big hits) but he'd opted for Remember The Time. Had I allowed album tracks, both of them would be higher than that, likely top 5, this week.

26th January 1974
It's straight in on top for The Hollies' version of the Albert Hammond song, The Air That I Breathe, which brings Allan Clarke and the gang back on form with an amazing ballad and second Retro chart-topper after 1969's He Ain't Heavy. That soaring guitar and Allan's vocals and harmonies are at the heart of it, while former bandmate Graham Nash is up to 36 with his gentle country song On The Line. That blocks a third Chinnchap number as Devil Gate Drive is at 2 for Suzi Quatro, her second top 3 after Can The Can hit the top spot.
New in at 11, taken from his new album, Ian "Woodstock" Matthews is back with his cover of Jackson Browne's mature teenage-written-debut-song These Days, previously charted by Nico in 1968. This version looks to be the inspiration for the heartbreaking Glen Campbell version in the 00's, which was brilliant, the lyrics suiting an older person with alzheimers more than say, a wistful teenager (who actually wrote it). I'd never heard this version before yesterday. Glen Campbell, meanwhile, returns with the very Jimmy-Webb sounding Houston (I'm Coming To See You) at 51 taken from his latest album which I happen to have on vinyl.
New at 20, Alvin gets his follow-up, the very Elvis Glam-styled Jealous Mind, who together with Mud, was showing the sort of things Elvis could have been doing rather than his largely tedious actual stuff (which fails to make my chart this week). New at 30, the late Canadian folkie Gordon Lightfoot debuts his fab Sundown, a US chart-topper and UK flop, while Marc Bolan abruptly changes style for the sprawling ballad Teenage Dream. The glory days were very much over for T. Rex, but the B side sneaks in at 80.
Neil Sedaka keeps his UK run going with his rock'n'roll throwback A Little Lovin' as he gears up to be signed to Elton John's Rocket label to win back his homeland on an album showcasing the best of his first 2 UK-only albums - which will pay dividends for the unassuming, talented family man who in no way looked like a pop star in the 70's. The music was everything. Gilbert's also back with one I didn't like at the time, but Happiness Is Me & You sounds OK 50 years later, and the very annoying Ma He's Making Eyes At Me isn't actually that bad, and the TV talent show child star Lena Zavaroni didn't deserve to die young from anorexia, so the track is kinda sad these days. She was about 10 and far too young for the music biz and the accompanying media attacks.

22nd JAN 1974 my actual charts of the time
2nd week at the top for hero Paul McCartney & his missus, and had I been listing albums Band On The Run would have topping too, they played a different track when it topped the chart on Johnnie Walker’s Radio 1 lunchtime show so I got a good idea just how good it was - even if I didn’t have the money to buy it! Still Macca’s finest post-Beatles album.
Mud stuck at 2 again, and Cher up to 3, Suzi back into the top 10, Todd makes it for the first official time (though I Saw The Light would have made it a year earlier had I allowed non-chart singles), and highest new entry is a hot new radio exclusive for Alvin Stardust, following up his chart-topper My Coo Ca Choo - in the real world it was Jealous Mind that hit number 1. 10CC go top 20, Stealer’s Wheel get their third hit with Star (future Baker Street-man Gerry Rafferty on vocals) and ultimate soul vocalist Aretha Franklin returns for the first time in 2 years with a gorgeous Stevie Wonder cover. Juuuuust gorgeous.

It's 3 weeks on top for Marc Almond's under-rated and forgotten My hand Over Your Heart, as Pet Shop Boys get Cicero a number 3. I'm a PSB fan, so a trifle over-rated I think. Wet Wet Wet get their biggest chart hit since Wishing I Was Lucky peaked at 4 5 years earlier, still their first and best record, but Goodnight Girl is a step up on everything in between. The KLF are back with an OTT revamp of What Time Is Love which I love more than the original. Such great fun, such epic records, such a tragedy that they called it a day after this single, new at 13.
Primal Scream movin' on up into the top 20 with leaps and bounds, ditto Buffy Sainte-Marie's finest moment, The Big Ones Get Away. This weeks oldies debuting include Dr.Hook's 1979 number 2 When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman at 23, a DNA revamp of Sharon Redd's 1981 club hit Can You Handle It at 28, The Valentine Brothers' original version of Money's Too Tight To Mention at 60 a first-time charter, as is the 1977 Punk pop minor classic Another Girl Another Planet from The Only Ones at 68. That leaves Michael Jackson starting to mine the new album for hit singles as Remember The Time enters at 33, Europe crying at 65 6 years on from The Final Countdown, the under-rated Definition Of Sound at 70 with Moira Jane's Cafe, 2 Unlimited entering the Twilight Zone at 72, and The Prodigy new at 75 with Everybody In The Place.

That's right, that's right, that's right, it's Mud on top for a 3rd chart-topper out of 4, a party classic guaranteed to get grandad on the floor dancing and doing the Mud shoulder-dance. That also makes 2 Chinn-Chapman creations in a row at number one with another classic new at 6 for Suzi Quatro, now on her 5th chart entry and her greatest Glam track, Devil Gate Drive, well come on! Meanwhile Who Do You Think You Are still sounds great for the Jigsaw cover and future Saint Etienne goodie, up to 7.
In at 17 with a third single outside The Strawbs, Hudson-Ford's Burn baby Burn revisits the sound of Part Of The Union for a great singalong that's been all but forgotten these days, and future UK chart-topper Billy Don't Be A Hero keeps up the dark story songs along with Seasons In The Sun and Dark Lady, the song from the Murray/Callander hit songwriting team who'd notched up UK chart-toppers in the 60's for Georgie Fame and others, and kick-starting Nottingham band Paper Lace's short chart career, after winning Opportunity Knocks on TV. They were robbed of a US number one by a quick inferior Bo Donaldson cover, but happily got it with their second single.
Other new entries: Graham Nash has his new album out, and future mellow folk single On The Line enters early for the ex-Hollies member, just beating his old band to the new entries on time-out from Crosby and Stills. So 8 years of retro charting then for Graham. Songwriter Paul Williams also returns with his typically classy 1920's ragtime ballad style on new track Inspiration at 51 fresh off his starring as an orang utan in Battle For The Planet Of The Apes.
Smokey Robinson drops his first official solo record, the very First Nation/Native American-sounding Just My Soul Responding, one I liked at the time, but a UK flop as per usually the case in 1974 for many US tracks (see above new entries). Slip & Slide gives Medicine Head a 4th, The Main Ingredient debut with a future UK soul hit, I Just Don't Want To Be Lonely, and future 80's Freddie McGregor hit cover, and The Sutherland Brothers make it 3 chart entries as they merge with Quiver on Dream Kid.
Carly Simon is knocking up the entries with her cover of Mockingbird, as already seen by Charlie & Inez Fox, but she duets with hubbie James Taylor bringing him back after 2 years AWOL chart-wise. Rhapsody In White is the title of the new Barry White/Love Unlimited/Orchestra album, and this instrumental gives Bazza 3 on the chart as he gears up on his solo stuff shortly. Marvin Gaye's UK single is from Let's Get It On, Come Get To This pretty much unknown, and new to me as it got no airplay at the time. Cilla, OTOH, got a lot of plugs on her TV show for Baby We Can't Go Wrong, which was nice but nothing special as a way to end to her singles chart career, bar one duet with Dusty in the 80's.

15th JANUARY 1974 My Charts of that week then
In which Paul McCartney gets the thrusting frantic sax rock album track to the top, the best thing he'd done since leaving The Beatles, and his 3rd number one outside the fabs. The ever-present Cher gets a big chart entry with a gypsy murder ballad, what a corker, drama of the first order! The critically-acclaimed Todd Rundgren enters with his huge American classic hit Hello It's Me. such a gorgeous song, and a crime it's unknown in the UK, the melody and his honeyed vocals are achingly brilliant.
Candlewick Green (who?!) cover Jigsaw and get a hit in my chart. For once, though, the definitive version was 20 years in the future - Saint Etienne! ** Fancy, I think an all-girl combo (don't quote me it was a long-time ago!) cover The Troggs ** Schoolteacher Clifford has another of his wistful, lovely singles, only one of which was a hit (Gaye) ** The Isley Brothers back again with classy soul ** Alice Cooper enters with the last of his run of hit singles ** 10CC sneak in with one of their (at this point) semi-regular flops, a quirky, witty, inventive song all about the hit-making money-machine record industry manufactured stars. A bit like 2014 then. 10CC have never got the recognition they deserve because wit, sarcasm and irony seem to go over most music fan's heads, sadly, especially when you can't be pigeon-holed in musical terms.

26th January 1992
It's 2 weeks on top for Marc Almond, still holding off Shakespear's Sister at 2 as Zuchero gets a second top 10, and Randy Crawford gets her first since 1980's One Day I'll Fly Away which peaked at 6. Kiss get their one and only top 10 thanks to a brilliant 1973 Argent song written by Russ Ballard. It's difficult to ruin but Kiss gave it a good old go. The Sugarcubes get a top 20 with Hit, but Bjork will be along before too long with many more hits.
The Osmond Boys are the highest new entry at 23, showing I was really getting nostalgic for the 70's - not only Kiss in the top 10, but the sons of some Osmonds make it another generation of chartmaking Osmonds. It's hard to know which Osmond brother they belong to as they all have about 134 kids. I havent heard this record in 30 years. It's very 90's forgettable guitar boyband with an OK hook. At 34, the classic Movin' On Up enters for the gospel-tinged Primal Scream, a radio staple since. Buffy Saint-Marie's brilliant The Big Ones get Away makes the 40, and so do James, a bit frustrated at not being higher.
I Wonder Why Curtis Stigers leaps to 40, cos I got bored with it very quickly is my hazy recollection, but the charts don't lie! Simply Red pop in before Stars has yet to leave with For Your Baby at 39, and at 51 Jah Wobble is back, one of many I barely remember to enter this week: Visions Of You, with the featuring of Sinead O'Connor the most memorable bit of the decent track. Garland Jeffreys never really made it in the UK, but Hail Hail Rock 'n' Roll was one I recall liking, and it's not a rock record, it's 90's souldance with the Soul II Soul shuffle beat.
Daisy Chainsaw debut with Love Your Money, and it sounds exactly as you'd expect, shouty female vocal over buzz-guitar punky gothrock. Yes, I can like loud, annoying music too! Digital Orgasm sounds like a rave track, just about to play to confirm if Running Out Of Time is. Yes it is, and it's quite beat-heavy and girlie vocal, very 1992 and very dull quite quickly. Genesis I Can't Dance I don't need to play, as it's memorable for being very ploddy. New at 72, but No Son Of Mine is much better. Isotonik also sounds like a rave track I've forgotten. It is, and I haven't missed owt. Just to underline the new entries this week, we finally have Rubbish from Carter USM. Ironically, it's not rubbish. And it's better than most of the tracks immediately above it that are new entries.

12th January 1974
It's straight in on top for a 4th number one in a row for The Sweet, as the Chinn-Chapman glamwagon keeps on rolling, Teenage Rampage ramping up the manic rock just as Mud hit their Chinn-Chapman peak with Tiger Feet entering at 5 for 4 top 5's in a row. My brother bought Teenage Rampage and I bought Tiger Feet, and so far this is mirroring how both records did in my original charts. The Chi-Lites meanwhile make it 6 top 10's as Homely Girl is up to 9.
David Bowie, were this 2024, would be lead artist featuring Lulu on The Man Who Sold The World and the B side Watch That Man, at 11 and 74 respectively, so I've given him a featuring credit - he wrote, produced, arranged and sang on both tracks, but really it's Lulu who is featuring, and looking oh so cool on Top Of The Pops. That's 7 years of retro charting and she's still only 25 or so at the time with a decade of hit singles.
Down the lower end, The Four Tops also keep the chart entries coming for a 7th year, with I Just Can't Get You Out Of My Mind new at 69, John Denver is into year 4 with Sunshine On My Shoulders, a UK flop, but one I knew. A lad in my class who was cool and self-confident and sporty, once absent-mindedly started singing "Sunshine" and stopped. So I finished the line and he was impressed I knew it, which made me feel cool by association as John Denver had yet to have a hit record in the UK.
Bette Midler's back, covering Glen Miller's In The Mood in a 1940's style, as she becomes an overnight sensation in the UK any week on the Parkinson chat show - funny, self-confident, brassy and sexy, and so so sharp and quick-witted in conversation. Instant fan here. That leaves The Detroit Spinners into a 5th year of charting, with Mighty Love, another UK flop, but it's not up to recent standards and hints at more out and out discofunk rather than smooth Philly grooves.

8th JAN 1974
Yes, freed from the UK singles charts - I now was free to include any tracks I liked, and I did so, album tracks, flops and especially American hits as I listened more to Paul Gambaccini's American charts countdown and also I discovered the American forces radio Europe network (living in Gloucester we had different radio signals from previous Lincoln where Radio Luxembourg was the only alternative to radio 1).
It was also the last year of school for a lot of kids who'd been caught by the raising of school leaving age, and weren't that interested in being there till 16. Hey ho. In those days local factories took on apprentices straight from school, and they wanted to be earning cash to go out to discos and suchlike. A new year and lots of new exciting records! The Sweet got their 5th consecutive number one with the stomping Teenage Rampage, one my brother bought and which I initially preferred to Chin-Chapman's classic Tiger Feet from Mud (the one I bought with my birthday record tokens, yes I was now sweet 16, all shy and innocent, and much more interested in DC Comics and Pop music, and Star Trek, than anything else. I even used to read science fiction novels back then. Yes I had time to actually read books. Wow!)
highest new entry was the radio played track for the album Band On The Run which had already topped the charts. I had little money for albums, so I can't express how frustrating it was to absolutely love a record and not be able to buy it. For months. A bit like 2014, then, only then it was rare, now it's common.
A third Chinn-Chapman hit machine track also entered high for Suzi Quatro and what a gem, though that was also a few weeks away from release. Lulu was back. With a Bowie bang! The absolutely marvellous cover of his The Man Who Sold The World set Lulu on a path to kinda-cool (occasionally) and a chameleon-like musical career after her pop days of the 60's. Meanwhile future-charters pop in lower down with flops that shoulda been hits, Gallagher & Lyle and Sutherland Brothers, writers of hit songs for others, most notably Tina Turner and Rod Stewart. Yes, Rod's Sailing was a Sutherland Brothers cover version. Can I just say he completely changed the band's version and turned it into a dirge? Just like almost all of his cover versions. Check out the original, way better.

19th January 1992
It's a second number one in a row for Marc Almond, as Trevor Horn helps him to a gorgeous 4th chart-topper in total, including Soft Cell material. My Hand Over My Heart deserved to be bigger. Shakespear's Sister get a first number 2 as Stay outdoes the peak of 3 for You're History, and Cicero shoots into the top 10 and his love is everywhere, with a bit of Pet Shop Boys assist. @nd time round The Blessing get that top 10 slot for Highway 5, and Ce Ce Peniston rockets from 69 to 25 with her Love Thang.
Highest new entry is from The Wonder Stuff, this time with Kirsty MacColl on a 2nd chart feature, as they usher us in to the Cheap seats (my usual place) at 32, and The Stone Roses debut at 40 with Waterfalls, for a bit of an Indie new entry vibe. Talking of vibes, Paula Abdul's Vibeology is not as good as the non-single that went top 5 here, but it's in at 57 anyway. The Pasadenas cover 1973 Sound Of Philadelphia hit I'm Doin' Fine Now, as done originally by New York City, it's new at 43. There's a C+C Music Factory cover of U2, a dreary Curtis Stigers somehow making my charts, and a forgettable Karyn White. It's forgettable because I don't remember how it goes, as opposed to a quality comment.

5th January 1974
It's Cher grabbing her second solo Retro chart-topper as the dark Dark Lady enters at 1, the gypsy strains and the woman-scorned mystery murder ballad was never as big as Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves in the UK, but was a monster US hit, much to my pleasure. The post-christmas lull makes the charts a little light on new stuff, but The Chi-Lites' drop Homely Girl in the States, but it was to be a much bigger hit in the UK, as were the Chi-Lites from hereon. New in at 14 and still better than the UB40 reggae cover.
10cc make it 6 top 20's, Johnny Nash gets his first one in 18 months, and Candlewick Green cover the Jigsaw album track, and future fab Saint Etienne hit in the 90's, Who Do You Think You Are. It's still pretty good and new at 36. John Holt has his new reggae album of covers of recent songs (for the most part) out, 1000 Volts Of Holt, which would get more chart notice late in 1974 when Help Me Make It Through The Night becomes a hit - so I'm charting it early as I dont want to wait and there's not much new in the way of singles out this week.
That leaves The Allman Brothers Band replacing Gregg Allman in the chart, and Jessica debuts at 73. It's a well-known instrumental theme tune these days but passed everybody by in the UK at the time, despite being a US hit. Appropriately Cher would marry Gregg Allman in 1975, what with both of them entering together at either end of the rundown.

5th January 1974 Wot I Liked That Actual Week Then
It's a third week on top for Roy Wood as I turn sweet 16, and I definitely got record tokens for Xmas and birthday as I will be spending them next week. 50 years later I got itunes vouchers as a generous retirement gift from workmates, considerably more than the 50p or so I got then. Back to school, back to working towards GCE and CSE exams. And I was back onto full-time personal charting again for the next 50 years too, only expanded to allow non-charting tracks, albums and oldies that had been reissued.
Getting instant Radio 1 airplay were the new Chinn-Chapman Glam Rock stompers from The Sweet and Mud, both of them coming off number ones for me, and The Sweet seemed like the most immediate classic, Teenage Rampage new at 3, with Mud's Tiger Feet in at 9 and also boosting Dynamite ahead of it dropping out of my chart. Stevie Wonder gets his highest charting single at 2 in 5 years of big hits, Living For The City, and Jonathan King keeps the top 10's going as Bubblerock.
In the post-christmas static charts and lack of new releases, the rest of the chart jostles about a bit with the Xmas singles dropping hard.
1 ( 1 ) FOREVER - Roy Wood
2 ( 5 ) LIVING FOR THE CITY - Stevie Wonder
3 ( NEW ) TEENAGE RAMPAGE - The Sweet

12th January 1992
It's 2 weeks on top for the 1966 classic from the Walker Brothers as Marc Almond makes it two top 3's in a row with My hand Over Your Heart at 3, and the highest new entry at 7 from Shakespear's Sister, their 2nd top 10 since You're History went top 3 in 1989, though Siobhan has loads of others as a Nana. Stay is an epic ballad, and an instant "woah" moment on first hearing. Blue Pearl grab a second top 10, ABC rocket into the 20 for the first time in 5 years, Say It! Enigma make it 3 in 12 months, and New Kids On The Block get a 4th, and highest peaking after Hangin Tough, Right Stuff and Tonight all peaked at 20.
The Blessing remix their 1991 flop and return again with Highway 5 at 22, Kylie covers classic 1970 Chairmen Of The Board's Give Me Just A Little More Time at 28, and Kiss smack into the 30 with their Argent cover. New at 33, Cicero debuts with Love Is Everywhere, sounding a little like a cheesy Eurodisco version of Pet Shop Boys. Most likely due to Pet Shop Boys co-producing, Neil helping on backing vocals, and Cicero being signed to their Spaghetti record label.
At 54, Bjork debuts with Hit. OK, it's The Sugarcubes, but she's very much there. Voice Of The Beehive are new at 60, with the minor hits still coming, Perfect Place, and Buffy Sainte-Marie returns for the first time in 20 years to my charts, with the fabulous Big Ones Get Away, political and relevant as ever in 2022 as it was 1992. Still charting in my charts in the 21st century with a song she recorded aged 75, and still fab and still fighting for First Nation rights in Canada and elsewhere aged 80-odd.
Ce Ce Peniston is back with another jaunty House dance number, We Got A Love Thang, Crystal Waters is already in Megamix territory, not usually a good sign for a long-term career, and Quo enter with Rock Till You Drop. And that has proved to be an actual mission statement for the much-missed Rick Parfitt and still-touring/recording Francis Rossi. My playlist oldies that week featuring 50's ballad doo-wop stylee hits. It can't be nostalgia, as I wasn't born, so it's just cos I like them and was in a 50's groove.

29th December 1973
It's the final retro chart of 1973 and the remaining title track, and future single in the summer of '74, Band On The Run gives Macca a second chart-topper of the year, and 4th post-Beatles, entering on top ahead of the New Year rush of classics. The number of Macca tracks on the chart remains the same though, as one drops out. Albert Hammond gets his biggest track since It Never Rains In Southern California, and 10cc drop their first taster from the next album, the very quirky Worst Band In The World. It wasn't surprising it flopped in the charts (and they really should have gone with Speed Kills) but it's engagingly in at 27.
Jonathan King brings satisfaction back briefly after it charted as an album track in 1972, while the actual Stones chart with their album track Doo Doo Doo Doo, which probably should have been a single in the UK. The Bay City Rollers enter with Remember (Sha La la) as they are about to part ways with the current vocalist for the previous 5 chart entries and enlist a young Les McKewan, re-record the vocals and hit the stratosphere with less good records where there were 3 pretty fine singles, 2 of which flopped.

My charts of the time 29th December 1973
It's 2 weeks on top for Roy Wood in my last chart of 1973 as Cozy Powell climbs to 3, Leo Sayer to 4, and Stevie Wonder gets a 4th top 10 of the year as Living For The City makes it 5 years of top 10's for the great Stevie. Elton grabs a late top 10 for his 4th of the year with his classic Xmas song, and the Bay City Rollers get a first top 10 since Keep On Dancing 2 years earlier.
Four new entries on this post-christmas chart - on Christmas Day we watched Top Of The Pops at a friend's house who had us over for dinner, happily this edition still exists and is still fabulous! What else was on telly? Help It's The Hair Bear Bunch was on repeat, a Hannah Barbera fave of the time, which ties in with the Dexter Redding record, God Bless, a kiddie list of TV animated faves from young Dexter Redding, son of the late Otis. I liked all the memories mentioned.
Other new entries, Jonathan King is back with another pseudonym, Bubblerock, and his folk-pastiche version of the Rolling Stones' Satisfaction, as it gets a single release from his 1972 album. The Stylistics make it a 5th top 30 as Rockin' Roll Baby brings a change of pace, upbeat rather than sweet soul ballads, and Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes are back with the great The Love I Lost, a future 90's remade dance monster for Sybil.
So, on BBC TV over the Xmas period, Laurel & Hardy were on morning TV, A Chump At Oxford from the days when ancient black & white comedy was still popular. I say ancient - 40 years seemed ancient to me then, but the equivalent would be a Young Ones repeat now. Champion The Wonder Horse was still getting shown, a 50's US TV romp, and fabulous Marx Brothers had A Night In Casablanca from 1946 on. Big shows were christmas specials from Morecambe & Wise and The Generation Game and The Beatles' were on Boxing Day with A Hard Day's Night. The Goodies & The Beanstalk was a fun romp, The Sonny & Cher Show was being shown from the USA not long ahead of their divorce, and the fab Alias Smith & Jones cowboy series was still on.
On ITV, the pretty naff Carry On Christmas TV special showed the movie series was about to reach the end of the road, Tommy Cooper, the odd film...and not much else worth watching!
