29th October 2017
Even later than usual this week, life is so manic I barely have time to breathe. Anyway Hurts get a second chart-topper in 3 weeks with the lovely sultry Wait Up, it's their 4th in total. Pet Shop Boys, the other prolific duo in my chart, go to 3 with the tropical laid-back gorgeousness of Between Two Islands. The tracks they didn't put on the Release album would have made a much more satisfying (if very varied) album than the actual sparse laid-back album itself.
Another duo have a big climb - Tears For Fears get a first top 20 hit with new material in 12 years, and stretch over 35 years. Highest new entry is a debut for classic album track Immigrant Song, Led Zep's banger that has never been a single, but is now featured strongly in Thor: Ragnarok to great effect and now belatedly charts here for a rare Led Zep single entry (they didn't release singles so they never qualified until I changed my rules). Marlon Roudette is back with another goodie, at 18, and Noel Gallagher pushes out his kid brother from my chart with his Mott The Hoople-ish glamstomper (It's very The Golden Age Of Rock 'n' Roll crossed with Rocky Martin's She Bangs).
Matt maltese debuts with a haunting track, as does Rex Orange County with a sweet one, and Elkie Brooks returns with another 2017 entry and 40 years on from Sunshine After The Rain going top 10.

22nd October 1985
It's a first week on top for a-ha's timeless Take On Me, as one fab creative video knocks off another one - from Midge's pin-cushion effect to a-ha's animation-strip style. Grace JOnes gets her biggest-ever hit as Slave To The Rhythm jumps to 5, and The Clash rocket almost 30 places to 6 for their first top 10 since Bankrobber in 1980. Elton John's Nikita saunters into the 10 to give Reg 15 consecutive years of top 10 hits, while the highest new entry is Mrs Cretu, German singer Sandra who's hubbie was to become mega as Enigma (and he often brought in the missus to help): in at 16 Maria Magdalena was a huge European smash (and UK flop) owing more than a bit to Laura Branigan's Self Control. I recently entered it into the Buzzjack Song Contest as an obscure oldie amongst a host of new tracks and it did spectacularly well with a whole new young generation of music fans. It sounds very relevant in 2017, obviously....
Talking Heads rocket into the 20, ditto Kate Bush (later to be sampled by Utah Saints to great effect), as Bucks Fizz singer Bobby G leads an inrush of ex-group singers to the chart: Roger Daltrey gets 12 years of solo hits, or 16 years including The Who; Sting enters Police-less with a lesser track; Feargal Sharkey gets another solo hit, his best ever record (written by Maria McKee), and I include the classic Teenage Kicks Undertones debut from 1978 in that; Jimmy Somerville pops in with The Communards, a Bronski Beat nevermore, as You Are My World turns out to be the best thing he's done since Smalltown Boy. It got to be a hit eventually in 1987.
UB40 enter right into the 40 with one of their great singles 5 years into their non-stop run of hits, and Siouxsie enters with her greatest single 7 years into her career, Cities In Dust still sounds fabulous. Twiggy's back 9 years on, and Tina Turner keeps the Mad Max coming. That concludes my catch-up-to-date double charting - please use this one for the pointings, not the previous week which is a week out-of-date....ta!

15th October 1985
2 weeks on top for Midge as a-ha challenge at 2. Brilliant vault up to 12 with their utterly different James Brown cover (sung from the point of view of a woman), Jennifer Holliday grabs a second top 20 hit, Grace Jones gets her second top 20 too - 5 years after the first - and ditto The Cult 5 weeks after the first (or so). Simple Minds are the highest of a pile of new tracks as the autumn pre-xmas deluge gets biting, with the great Alive And Kicking. In 1985 Madonna could fart into a microphone and get a hit, and sure enough The Gambler enters at 30, The Three Degrees return after a 5-year gap, Talking Heads after a 4-year gap (with the fab Road To Nowhere), The Clash after a 2-year rest, and The Thompson Twins keep the run of singles coming.
Kate Bush chucks out another winner, the one with the Donald Sutherland video, the great Cloudbusting, following a chart-topper as do The Cars and Godley & Creme. A Miami Vice theme track charts for Jan Hammer, better than the TV show at any rate (though it did have Sheena Easton in it), and some of Duran Duran decide it's time for an Election Day. Duran without the rhythm oomph, effectively. Modern Talking and Pat Benatar follow-up great singles with much less great tracks....

21st October 1967
It's a first week on top for Dave Dee and co and the tuneful fun Zabadak! It won't be the last time they top my charts.... nor for Nancy Sinatra - who is back in at 7 with the nominal B side of Lady Bird (up inside the 40), but which is the trippy hippy cult classic that is Sand, Lee Hazelwood was definitely on something, but those lyrics are pure poetry. I have managed to get the record played twice on the BBC - first on Simon Mayo's Radio 1 obscure track with a story, and later on Radio 2's Brian Mathews Sounds Of The 60's with the same story: dad bought a reel-to-reel tape recorder in RAF Changi, Singapore in 1970, and I was obsessed with pop music to put it mildly. Dad & I both bought some blank tapes (not cheap) and while we were out at work and school, respectively, mum was at home at our house which was overlooked by the armed guard tower for Changi Prison in lush tropical equatorial Singapore. If a song came on the radio she liked she'd start the tape recording - and then forget to turn it off. So we got all sorts of radio tracks I never knew, including this one (mum loved men with gruff voices and Lee Hazelwood fit that bill perfectly). Sand should be better known.
Another Singapore reel-to-reel track enters at 31 for Felice Taylor, her second Barry White track of the year in my charts, and her first hit (and his), I Feel Love Comin' On. It was groovy. More tape faves from a fave Disney animation enter lower down - and they would eventually become a mashed-up 90's hit - The Jungle Book's Bare Necessities and I Wanna Be Like You. So you see, in 1970 I was discovering and rediscovering 1967 music big-time. In my mind it's a mash-up of sunny RAF Valley on Anglesey and tropical Singapore at RAF Changi.
Future Vegas act Wayne Newton, though, is new to me, and is in with an early version of Love Of The Common People, future much-covered hit, The Left Banke debut ahead of their later hit classic with cult fave Desiree, while minor tracks for The Four Seasons, Mamas & The Papas, and Tommy James keep up the hit tally.

22nd October 2017
Evangeline finally gets on top, holding off another Hurts challenger, the soulful Wait Up. My Kingdom was entered into Buzzjack Song Contest 98 and failed to make the final. I wasn't in that semi, sadly, cos I don't know what substances everyone was one to ignore this brilliant track, the sexiest track of the year - that's sexy tingly passion not rapper "sexy" sweary-naughty-words which are not remotely sexy or passionate. This one builds, a great melody, a convincing vocal to match the tastefully passionate lyrics, and then that driving beat getting louder with rising passions right through to the "drop" as I believe the youngsters call it, and frenzied electrobeats. Perfectly constructed. Obviously all too young to know what it's about laugh.gif
Sparks shoot up into the top 10 with Edith Piaf. That's the song, not a duet with a French ghost chanteuse. That gives the boys 43 years of top 10's and around about a dozen at least to date, I reckon, probably more, with another cantering a bit lower with the Macbeths, reality TV stylee. Class! Pet Shop Boys get another top 10 with a non-charted oldie, we are really closing in on 70 or 80 top 10's for that UK duo, the biggest by far outpacing the US nearest version - Sparks.
There's a load of new entries following the George Michael TV show (which I haven't seen yet) as they all charted in the sales chart, so they may yet go up when I watch it. Another UK duo are also back - it's OMD, and I think they may must be the 2nd biggest duo in my charts of all-time. 14th October 1967
A first week at one for Glen Campbell's brilliant Jimmy Webb Phoenix ballad, the first of a trilogy of Americana Cities-themed classics. Dave Dee and co echo the future Family Dogg hit Way Of Life up to 2, and Gene Pitney makes the top 10, though sadly almost all his great hits predated 1967 so not many more to come. The Bee Gees make it two in the 20, Giant Sunflower blossom into the 20, and Nico's original of the Jackson Browne classic as done definitively by Glen Campbell (one day) beaks into the 20.
Highest new entry is one of 2 from Dionne Warwick, the movie theme big USA hit Valley Of The Dolls, at 23 ahead of the future Aretha Franklin classic, I Say A Little Prayer, as Aretha peaks at 5 with Carole King's classic, and Aretha' sis Erma enters at 37 with future Janis Joplin classic Piece Of My Heart. That leaves second-highest new entry a second song from The Kinks - Autumn Almanac at 26, and a childhood fave - and an anecdote from me: picture it. RAF Valley, Anglesey married quarters, 9 Tro Minfordd, and the song comes on the new BBC radio station. 9-year-old John rushes to the Weekend mag his mum had bought, and digs out the newly-discovered hit-song-lyric-of-the-week published inside: One Autumn Almanac, and sings along. Mum comments impressed about him knowing the lyrics, and young John says he's reading and singing along. Cue young John cutting them out and saving pop song lyrics from here-on until Disco 45 gets published...
OK, not riveting, but it's of the time!
Others: Wet Wet Wet are in, oops, I mean the much better original of Love Is All Around, Nancy & Lee are back while Nancy is still in the 40, with a song I assumed was for the First Lady of the USA (Probably not!), Neil D is back again, Val Doonican is in with a lesser song from his repertoire (which I loved as a kid pre-1967) and Bob Seger debuts with a track new to me a full decade before he started with hits proper. Who knew?!

15th October 2017
3 weeks for Hurts on top, as they challenge themselves with the soulful Wait Up up to 3, and a massive leap for Burak Yeter up 30 spots to 7. Hurts new album has peaked at 21 in the UK chart which is ludicrously low for such a great band. Two Pet Shop Boys from the recharting extended Release CD set, both I already knew but hadn't charted before, dating from 2002-4-ish. The album excluded any (much better) tracks that didn't fit into the mood, including these two gems, one latin-tinged, one banger singalong.
Two new revamped tracks a la Elvis for Roy Orbison gives us 2 late lamented Traveling Wilburys in the chart, as well as the band itself. Love Hurts has been much-covered over the years (Nazereth and Jim Capaldi for two hit versions, for a start) so about time Roy charted his original. Chaka Khan gets a credit, which allows me to claim her charting in my charts for 43 years, starting with Rufus' Tell Me Something Good in 1974.

8th October 1985
It's a first week on top for Midge Ure, rather appropriately cos I saw him perform this wonderful song last night as I write (14th Oct 2017) heading a triple bill of fab Clare Crogan's Altered Images, still in fine voice, and ditto The Christians smooth rocksoul. Great to hear them all with more hits than you think you know!
Jennifer Rush powers into the 10, The Smiths make a thorny dash into the 20, and Level 42 have something about going top 40. Highest new entry is the brilliant Trevor Horn-produced Grace Jones Slave To The Rhythm, at 44, The Cult follow-up with Rain, Sade keeps the jazzsoul coming, Prince has another psychedelic-soul single off Around The World In A Day, and a classic Simple Minds movie song pops in. One to have a Breakfast Club to.
Woodpeckers From Space? No, I don't remember it either, but I had fond movies of being in the Micky Mouse club in Singapore (Woody Woodpecker shorts on film shown to RAF kids in Siglap, presumably unable to finance Disney shorts). Certainly no other excuse for charting it. One place higher than Erasure's debut of a flop single first time round, the former Depeche Mode Vince is also lower than his ex-bandmates. Bobby Womack follows his brother and sister-in-law into my charts, Kaja have dropped the googooo - they needent have bothered - The Alarm are strong at 75, and The Jesus And Mary Chain are just like honey at 74. Bobby Womack follows his brother and sister-in-law into my charts, Kaja have dropped the googooo - they needent have bothered - The Alarm are strong at 75, and The Jesus And Mary Chain are just like honey at 74. Sweet.

7th October 1967
It's 3 weeks on top for the fab Gibbs and their Massachussets, but it was a close call with the classic Jimmy Webb UK-non-hit, one of the greatest travesty's in chart history, as Glen Campbell enters at 2 (where Gentle On My Mind peaked) with By The Time I Get To Phoenix. Dave Dee & co enter with their best track, despite a deliberate attempt from Howard & Blaikley to write a song with nonsense lyrics, cos it's just a brilliant tune and production, and one I was mad on at the time. Very under-rated songwriter-producers, they could tackle multiple genres and make mini-pop-gems out of 'em.
Harry Nilsson gets his first top 10, and not his last, with the gorgeous Without Her - Jack Jones did a good cover, unlikely as it sounds, as I may have said already. New at 17, David McWilliams with another UK chart non-hit travesty, though Marc Almond and Trevor Horn took it into the top 5 in 1992 (and topped my chart), The Days Of Pearly Spencer. Nico enters at 31 with another non-UK-hit gem, in any version: 16-year-old precocious Jackson Browne wrote it, Nico did the first version of dozens, and 5 years ahead of Jackson Browne's own version seeing the light of day. Mature in the extreme for a teenager, for me the definitive version was recorded in 2008 on Glen Campbell's brilliant Meet Glen Campbell and should have been a single - it topped my charts and was one of my tracks of the decade, suiting a great singer nearing the end of his life and career more than one starting out.
In at 40, one new to me, Giant Sunflower, girl/boys harmony band sort of Mamas & Papas crossed with Middle Of The Road (in vocal style), and a very minor US chart entry, despite impeccable production credentials from Lou Adler and yet another of the many1967 covers of a Smokey Robinson song (The Miracles did it first). 60's soul star Chuck Jackson pops in with another goodie new to me (he had many US hits, and his best-known song is I Keep Forgettin' as covered by Michael McDonald) Shame On Me, funk legend George Clinton is back again for a second chart entry at 52, Gladys & her family are in with a song made immortal by Marvin Gaye (Berry Gordy shelved it and funked it up for a huge US hit), I Heard It Through The Grapevine, Shirley Bassey enters with a song that was all over British TV and radio for years, hugely well-known at the time and one of her signature tunes, Big Spender. The Kinks pop in with a future hit for The Jam, Barbara Randolph does a good Motown cover of a Holland-Dozier-Holland Four Tops song, Scott McKenzie gets a second John Phillips gift (not as good a prezzie this one though), Sandy Posey gets a 3rd chart entry of the year, and finally obscure band The Messengers tackle another Motown song: R. Dean Taylor's Window Shopping (the only white songwriter on the label at the time, I think), which eventually became a UK single for R. Dean himself in 1974 following There's A Ghost In My House and Gotta See Jane having Northern Soul chart success. It also charted in my charts then.

Still a week behind in my charting but hopefully this will be the bonus chart and I will catch up this week with the next official chart for this week..
w/e 1st October 1985
3 weeks on top for Red Box, as The Style Council rocket up to 2 with the great melody of the otherwise a bit political The Lodgers, their 4th top 3, and Paul Weller's 4th. Amii Stewart makes the top 10 as airplay starts favouring Light My Fire a bit more (the better track), and Dead Or Alive make it 4 top 10's in a row, and Billy Idol 3 out of 4.
A-ha shoot up into the top 20 as the classic video starts to get TV plays, Colonel Abrams is trapped just outside the 20, and Jolene takes Strawberry Switchblade and Dolly Parton's song back into the 40. Marc Bolan is the highest new entry at 36 with a rare early song given a release as his loyal fans kept the T.Rex legend living on. It's a Brilliant song at 45, a cover of the James Brown 60's classic done female vocal stylee by the cool future KLF member Jimmy Cauty and ex-Killing Joke and future record producer Youth, drafting in the terrific vocalist JUne Montana. Their A&R Manager was Bill Drummond (the other half of KLF), and they were produced by err Stock Aitken Waterman who also had a hand in the songwriting. It can be NO coincidence that the KLF had a fab song called Kylie Said To Jason, just before the Timelords alter-ego took them to the top of the charts.
14 years of chart entries and Elton is in with his pretty ballad Nikita - yes it is a boys name, wonder if he was trying to tell us something at the time.... Meanwhile Depeche are back, ditto The Cars, Level 42 and Matt Bianco.

8th October 2017
It's 2 weeks weeks on top for the fabulous almost-festive singalong ballad from Hurts (MUST be a December single surely!?), followed closely by the fab Evangeline pumping dance single, My Kingdom. Hurts hold at 3, and rise to 6 with the Prince-flavoured Wait Up for half of the top 6! Two dance bangers enter the top 10, and Sophie Tucker hits 12, sorry I mean Sofi Tukker. Force of habit for old folk.
In at 24, highest new entry is the 2004 track featured in the new Kingsman film to great effect - Cameo's Word Up done hillbilly style by a German country covers band, The BossHoss. Fun! P!nk leapfrogs herself as Beautiful Trauma jaunts into the 30, and Burak Yeter & Ryan Ribak enter into the 40. Following the sad death of Tom Petty there are a sprinkling of Wilburys and Heartbreakers tracks entering. It was 40 years ago that Tom debuted in my chart, so it's nice to see a selection back for a nice bloke.
Morrissey is also back 34 years on from This Charming Man, and it's a good offering too, while Motiv8 and Angie Brown finally get a second week on my chart - 23 years after peaking at 75. Maybe I was out the country at the time, or maybe I was getting fed up with jaunty piano house tunes dominating the charts, but it's decent and deserved better.

30th September 1967
It's 2 weeks on top for The Bee Gees as The Who leap in seeing for miles and miles - presumably all the way to Massachussets - and it's their biggest hit to date. That also goes for Aretha, up to 9, and Harry Nilsson's instant entry at 16 with the gorgeous Without Her. Gene Pitney's future UK chart-topper (with Marc Almond) is in at 20 with his original and definitive version of Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart. Procol Harum follow-up a classic with a whimper, and a few other 1967 chart regulars pop in with more lesser tracks.

still a week behind in my charting. If I don't get the right one on the spreadsheet by Friday this will have to do for now... (they are all in pencil notepad format)
w/e 24th September 1985
It's Red Box for a second week on top as Stevie Wonder shoots up to get his last top 3 with new material, after a 17 year-run. Midge Ure is up to 4, beating his 1982 No Regrets cover, Madonna makes it 5 top 10's in 1985 with Angel, and The Cure get a 5th top 10 up 32 places. Greg Phillinganes and David Cassidy stride into the 20, and the highest new entry is a classic at 37 as A-Ha debut with Take On Me. That spearheads a mass invasion of new tracks, many of them inspired by the new pop TV show Jonathan King's No Limits - the theme tune itself debuts at 75, as new young presenters win an X-Factor type race to host the show.
In at 38, The Style Council are back with one of their best tracks, The Lodgers, and Dead Or Alive make it 4 hits in a row at 40, My Heart Goes Bang. At 42, Colonel Abrams funky dance Trapped, 44 is a recharting 1982 hit from America, and Kim Carnes is back 5 years since her debut with More Love, in at 50 and she's crazy in the night. Aren't we all.
Journey are massive in the 21st Century thanks to Don't Stop Believin', but back in 1985 they meant very little in the UK, though they had a few charting hits for me starting with Anyway You Want It in 1980. Steve Perrie steps out here for a solo hit, at 57, Cameo bung in some Single Life funk to follow up the fab She's Strange, future monster hit in the UK (but not her home USA) Jennifer Rush enters with The Power Of Love, the 3rd song within 12 months to use the title.
The Smiths near the end of their chart journey as The Boy With The Thorn In His Side sneaks in at 64, and Twiggy returns 9 years on from her chart debut, and 20 years since she burst onto the iconic British fashion scene, Jennifer Holliday is back 3 years on from her show-stopping, and unsurpassable, version of And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going from Dream Girls - being sung these days by Amber Riley, former Glee star, Glee of course covering Journey's Don't Stop Believin' to huge success, and causing the original to finally chart big in the UK.
Elaine Page returns, 4 years since Memories started her showtune singles chart career, and fresh off her UK chart-topper with Babs Dickson. That leaves Lou Reed making a chart comeback after quite a gap of time, some 12 years since Walk On The Wild Side, and Hall & Oates also back with a cover - in this case a Temptations medley. Phew! Loads of drop outs!

1st October 2017
It's Hurts in at 1 from nowhere - I hadn't heard it before today when I checked out the new album, which looks pretty good, but has 2 fab future singles (I hope) and 2 current singles. Magnificent is another showstopping power ballad from the lads, fab and knocks off Footsteps from the top. Here's hoping they make it the next single (as Pet Shop Boys should have done with Footsteps). In at 3 it's the single proper, and Ready To Go is the upbeat current Radio 2 playlist single for Hurts. That leaves the Prince-inspired funk of Wait Up in at 17, with a great hook. 3 instant top 20 tracks.
Martin Solveig and Alma have a good climb, into the 20, as Sparks add a top 20 to their 43-year-long list of them. Sofi Tukker, the US duo, have a massive climb into the 30 with an unusual upbeat track, while the highest non-Hurts track to enter is from ARLE, both a district of Cheltenham and a new moody dance banger. P!nk has a quick follow up Beautiful Trauma as her current biggie is yet to drop much, as does Jaira Burns grabbing a quick second entry. Brighton band The RPM's round out the new stuff.

I'm a week behind on my charting, so until I catch up, here's the next (missing) one:
18th September 1985
It's a new number one, thankfully knocking off Bowie & Jagger from the top after one week only - Red Box and the fab Lean On Me. Tears For Fears grab another top 5, their 5th, with oldie Suffer The Children rocketing up. Blancmange also grab another top 10, their 3rd, and Stevie Wonder hits 9, 17 years after his first (For Once In My Life, a cover of a Tony Bennett minor hit from 1967). Stevie's also back assisting uncredited on Cliff's new song from Dave Clark's musical album of the future musical Time, and Cliff is also 17 years in to his career.
Midge Ure shoots up to 12, If I Was, and it's a magical rise to 26 for Bucks Fizz, back in the UK album chart this very week after an absence of 30-odd years - albeit known as The Fizz, and only three-quarters of the original line-up. Highest new entry is Madonna, she's a UK singles chart Angel in 1985, totally her year, no question. Changing the face of megapop to female vocalists. In at 36, a future shoddy hit cover for Eric Clapton, but here the brilliant original from Greg Phillinganes, Behind The Mask. Featured on Jonathan King's Entertainment USA, and still not a hit.
Rene and Renata have split up, and he's with Angela now - just kidding, it's a smooth soul act newly in, as The Cure are back swiftly with the fab Wardrobe-on-a-cliff Close To Me. At 60, Diana Ross follows up a great single with one that should have been brilliant, written by 2 Gibb brothers and Michael Jackson, who helps more than a little on production and vocals. Di had to wait a few months for a proper Bee Gees classic song though, without Jacko to bring it down a notch (clearly saving his best efforts for Bad).
Know how we look back fondly on those childhood novelty songs? There's one at 70, I have no memory of it at all, prob because I was 27 and not 7. Sneaking in at 74, it's 70's rock divas Heart, at long last charting with the triff What About Love. Sadly it took another another 3 years to progress further as Heart became AOR late 80's UK faves a good decade after US success. The Damned are also back. Is It A Dream? It's not Classix Nouveaux at any rate...

23rd September 1967
It's a first week on top for the fab Bee Gees' Massachussets, as the almost-as-fab Gibb brothers' (and friends) Holiday pops in at 24, both showcasing Robin Gibb's fragile but effective lead vocals. Peter Frampton is up to 3, and the highest new entry is at 7, a future tender top 10 cover (in my charts) by Alison Krauss, Baby Now That I've Found You, The Foundations debut with the late Clem Curtis' triff vocals. A great UK pop song, and just behind it a great US pop song fromThe Cowsills, daft title or not it sparked a TV show inspired by the family group (The Partridge Family). 5 brothers, 1 sister, 1 mother, and another fab track 2 years in the future.
Aretha replaces herself in the top 20, the gorgeous Caroie King song You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman keeping up her run of 1967 chart entries at a frantic pace. This is her pearl in the '67 shell, though, a version even better than Carole King's Tapestry brilliance. Scott Walker bounds into the 20 with Mathilde, giving him 2 consecutive dramatic ballads, and few do that better than Scott. Georgie Fame goes top 30 with a sweet track, the best version of Hush goes top 40 (the lyrics actually make sense as sung by Billy, rather than one-level in the covers), and the good South African Pata Pata brings Miriam Makeba to international note.
The Hollies are back again, as ever, Jackie DeShannon pops in with an oldie (her cover to be covered by The Four Tops) - which she frankly didn't need to do: pause for breath...byt his stage she had dated Elvis, toured with and inspired The Beatles, wrote songs like When You Walk In The Room, Breakaway, Bette Davis Eyes, When You Walk In The Room, and co-wrote with Led Zep Jimmy Page, Randy Newman, and had hits herself with Put A Little Love In Your Heart and What The World Needs Now Is Love. Legend, and still going strong! Oh, yes, mustn't forget that Hendrix fellow with a good track that was, cough, to be an "inspiration", cough, for Cozy Powell's Dance With The Devil (splutter, a better record, sacrilege!).

It's Pet Shop Boys on top for a 2nd week, fresh as I get back from 5 days in Salou on rollercoasters again (one is never too old for a cheap thrill) and having read the Johnny Marr autobiog - Pet Shop Boys feature, as they should when I saw him helping them out at The Albert Hall charity gig last summer with Suedehead. Footsteps would have fit in beautifully.
Evangeline shoots up to 4, and is growing on me bigtime, clubtastic, and The Killers climb 22 to grab a second consecutive top 10, some 13 years on from first doing that! As I enjoy a nice round-robin of reference, Brandon Flowers is a huge Pet Shop Boys and Smiths fan, and Suedehead was Morrisey's debut solo single after The Smiths split up and Johnny Marr moved on to Electronic with Bernard Sumner and guests Pet Shop Boys.
Reggaeton Lento was getting some cabaret evening cover in the holiday hotel in the evenings, along with Despacito and other Latin hits, and theatrical musical Cabaret songs - which was a cue for Liza Minelli, who also had an album produced and songs written by Pet Shop Boys in 1989. Life is circular.

17th September 2017
It's the Pet Shop Boys gorgeous Footsteps on top, a 1999 album track that should have been a single, but in those days I only allowed one album track per album to chart - these days I'm going with around 3, and Nightlife made the charts again recently, so that's an excuse to finally get it on top, as it would have done in late '99 had I changed my chart rules. That's a 44th topper, and one not far behind from the same album at 4.
The late Glen Campbell makes the top 10 47 years since the first time (it topped my chart in 1970), and Katy Perry finally goes top 10 after 14 weeks on my chart, Swish! Thirty Seconds From Mars, the band of The Joker, at least the Suicide Squad version, is the highest entry at 19. Any DC comics connection is good enough for me! ZAYN and Sia rocket up to 30, and Sparks get 2 new entries, the best new tracks off Hippopotamus, which was getting heavily pushed on posters all over Copenhagen back in July, so a bit of a wait! Suedey entered Edith Piaf into Buzzjack Song Contest, and had it been the studio version it would have done much better. Sparks, 43 years of charting here and still going strong.

16th September 1967
It's a first week on top for Lulu's best ballad, To Sir With Love, still a teenager and 3 years or so since Shout would have topped my chart (probably), what 60's kid didn't love that one!? In at 2, and matching previous single To Love Somebody in one go, it's the track that featured on 12 Big Hits, a 1968 stereo Australian hits compilation, an album I absolutely nagged my dad to buy while he was thinking about whether it was worth the money (albums weren't cheap) at Changi market, Singapore, Oct 1969: Massachussets. There were too many gems I obsessively loved on it to pass up, and mum loved The Bee Gees.
The Herd stampede into the top 5, The Young Rascals outdo the 1972 David Cassidy cover in my charts (peaked at 12) but not my affections (a live version by now-ailing darlin' David topped my chart in 1987), and the also fab Dusty version is yet to chart (one I missed in 1970, being as I lived in Singapore then). In at 18, the highest of 3 tracks off Scott, Scott Walker's first solo album, and one he wrote himself - the other 2 being Jacques Brel covers. Moody and magnificent.
Nancy's back, before she's even left my chart, a bit more uptempo, The Seekers return, Booker T covers the Young Rascals, and a big American hit, very much of it's time, is in at 73 - obscure in the UK though.
