4th February 2018
It's 2 weeks on top for the Irma Thomas 1964 soul gem fresh from Black Mirror. That keeps Kylie in her place as Revivalists have a god climb to 3 leapfrogging Justin Timberlake's under-rated new track and Paloma's 3rd single from the album. Kim Wilde rockets with Ricky to 22 from 74 - Ricky's biggest chart credit since Mrs Malinski made my top 30 in 1974. No you don't have to pretend you know it and it won't be on Spotify. His voice has dropped quite a bit since then! Mine too.
The Eels return to my top 40 for the first time in 13 years, quite a gap, while Camilla Cabello outdoes Havana here and becomes her 2nd top 40. The Weeknd has an instant top 40 highest new entry, aided by Kendrick Lamar, who also enters lower with another track, both songs from the forthcoming 50 Shades film. Fleetwood Mac's classic Rhiannon is well over 40 years old, and was last in my charts exactly 40 years ago - this is the album version, though, so the new Fleetwood Mac deluxe has given me an excuse to chart this uncharted version. Fab. Finally, Toto are back after a 30-year gap (bar reissues) with a souped-up version of an old unreleased very Rosanna period Toto, sadly I would prefer Hold The Line-period Toto, though Africa was fab.

28th January 1986
2 weeks on top for the classic a-ha shining on, heading a relatively static top 10, though Eurythmics get another top 5 the same week Aretha follows up her Eurythmics top 10 with a solo effort. Five Star get a big climb into the 20, Madonna finally gets Borderline into the 20, and Grace Jones does Edith Piaf chanson and funk both for a big climb. I prefer La Vie En Rose these days.
Top go Alexander O'Neal for the first time, Talk Talk for the 4th time (ish), James Brown for the second time, and Clannad and Bono (U2 having had several over 5 years). New in are The Damned with a decent cover of Barry Ryan's classic histrionic ambitious epic chart-topper (for me) from 1968, Eloise at 26. At 37, Russ Ballard debuts with Voices, a great obscure track that gives him a solo chart career of 11 years, or 14 years including Argent. In the interim he wrote loads of classic songs like So You Win Again for Hot Chocolate, and Substitute for Clout.
Fra Lippo Lippi overcome a silly name to enter, Elvis Costello hides unsuccessfully behind a pseudonym for an Animals cover, Nana Mouskouri enters with her only ever chart song - though had I been charting in the early 60's her fabulous Greek-themed White Rose Of Athens would have been big, cos it's still a fab toon. Divas are the order of the day down the tail-end and playlist, though, as Diana Ross gets a Bee Gees gift and a half for a Chain Reaction smash, Whitney has a hum ho follow-up, and Nancy, Shirley and Abba grab my playlist oldies. Vinyl playlist, though call it Streaming had it been invented. 2 70's fave acts return: Betty Wright clean-up woman is back 11 years on from Shoorah Shoorah and Where Is The Love, and Peter Frampton has a 10-year span of hits since topping with Show Me The Way - or 19 years had I been charting in 1967 when The Herd emerged with a teen vocalist.

27th January 1968
3 weeks on top for Nancy & Lee's cinematic slice of poetry and passion, holding off the pop classic of Everlasting Love at 2, and the Bee Gees climb to 3 with Words, a great song and never bettered despite many covers. Otis gets his classic Dock Of The Bay into the 10, as do Quo's Matchstick Men and Ray Charles' lush oldie. Glen's fab album tracks from his grammy-winning By The Time I Get To Phoenix have mixed fortunes, but 2 of them climb, still sounding good to me 50 years on from discovery (more or less).
Don't Stop The Carnival was another childhood fave as we moved from the wintry Isle Of Anglesey to the snow-bound RAF Swinderby in Lincolnshire, as I discovered another childhood passion: Comics. Starting with Sparky Comics (among many UK comics) well on my way to Superhero US DC Comics. So it's in at 22, as a track I'd never heard until 3 weeks ago shoots up to 29: We Can Fly might be cheese, but it's very tasty. A track I associate with 1971 (cos it was UK hit then) enters at 43 forThe Delfonics, with what was transforming into a big 70's chart theme: Philly Soul. Reparata is 7 years ahead of her Shoes, but another one I rather loved at the time, Captain Of Your Ship is in at 47.
Down the bottom end of the chart some new entries for obscure Psychedelic pop, certainly ones I'd never heard of until, errr, now: The Balloon Farm, Grapefruit and a fab track from Ohio Express which is no Yummy Yummy Yummy - it's more like early Stranglers, with a tweek here and there: Try It! Not to mention country legend Kenny Rogers debuting with psychedelic country, better known as a cult film track these days.

28th January 2018
It's in at 1 for a record I didn't know a week ago - Irma Thomas' brilliant 1964 soul ballad fresh from use in an episode of Black Mirror (via Buzzjack Song Contest). Hauntingly fab. That stops Kylie grabbing another chart-topper, but she adds to her long list of 2's anyway. Paloma Faith gets a 3rd top 10 a in a row in a frantic chart, up 54 places. It's been a long time since so many tracks were climbing at a pace like this, and bar the number one they are all new or recent-ish. That means a clear-out of 2017 tracks.
In at 7, highest new song is the first good track off Justin T's forthcoming album, while The Revivalists shoot up to 8, and Liam Payne gets more solo top 10's than One Direction managed, joined by Rita Ora getting a rare one. At 12, SSion, is a video mix of a a ballad, pop song and pyscho Jesus & Mary Chain/Jesus Jones Info freako-ish popchartfreakout. Epic. Fall Out Boy get a 2nd top 20 in a row, Rudimental are back with Macklemore and Jess Glynne in tow, Dua Lipa doesn't give a ... about being late into my chart, ditto Tom walker, Eminem and Camilla cabello. Oldies Eels are back for over 20 years of hits including a chart-topper with Last Stop: This Time. Turin Brakes return, but it's nothing next to Kim Wilde's 37 year run aided by bruv (as ever) who gets a credit for the first time as he's actually singing. Ricky first charted in 1972 with his flop (but well-played) pre-teen track I Am An Astronaut, and hit my top 10 with Teen Wave in 1974, a template for Kim's 80's smashes (sort of). So, Rick makes it 46 years (gasp!) and he's younger than me...!

21st January 1986
It's a first week on top for a-ha's brilliant Sun Always Shines On TV, proper epic pop, and their second chart-topper in a row. Highest new entry is a return for a great flop track from 1985 (theme of the year again and again), Belouis Some's Imagination at 3, as Mr. Mister make the top 5. Another '85 flop hits the top 10, for Latin Quarter, Todd Rundgren is back at 23 with his biggest "hit" since the brilliant Hello It's Me went top 5 12 years earlier, and the equally brilliant I Saw The Light started his chart career in 1972.
Madonna's back with another minor hit back bigger, 1984's Borderline, Double's charming single enters at 31, and Five Star, Grace Jones, and Stevie Nicks all get deserved big leaps into the 40, and it's a 1979 Rapper's Return as the one that kick-started a whole genre returns at 44, while fellow early rap pioneer Kurtis Blow finally follows up his Christmas Rapping with If I Ruled The World just over 6 years on.
Drum Theatre were a good support band I saw at the time, and enter at 48, with the great Talk Talk single in at 50, Life's What You Make It making it 4 years of good singles. James Brown's last big hit is in with Living In America, a decade on since his last chart entry - though his song is still on my playlist as done by Brilliant. Gloria Estefan does the Conga, though not getting billing yet 2 years on from Dr. Beat, John Cougar is also back 4 years on from Jack And Diane, with extra unnecessary Mellencamp, and Clannad have a fab duet with Bono.

20th January 1968
2 weeks on top for the awesome Some Velvet Morning, just keeping off the fabulous Everlasting Love, and Harry Nilsson's gorgeous One hits a new peak of 7. Highest new entry is another track off our Singapore Various Artists vinyl album 16 Big Hits, Otis Redding's posthumous classic Dock Of The Bay. It seems fairly clear his career was about to get very interesting and move into new areas, a big loss. At 22, Pictures Of Matchstick Men, an early Quo debut for the veteran perennials of the next 50 years - who could have predicted this fab Psych-pop track would launch a varied career (yes, varied, whenever it suited them they could handle other styles other than chord rock boogie).
The Foundations both depart my chart and enter, Back On My Feet Again sadly forgotten these days, but it;s good. At 45 The Manfreds are back with a childhood fave, who didn't love Dylan's The Mighty Quinn? Ditto, childhood just loving Anita Harris and the old-fashioned Anniversary Waltz - tune! So many goodies about Elvis has to settle for a 60 debut for the return to countryrock Guitar Man, & a classic debut for Sly & The Family Stone, Dance To The Music, a band I saw on a one-off performance in the UK a few years back, utterly memorable for all the wrong reasons, like a car crash. Let's just say the audience demanded (and got) their money back from the Victorian-styled Opera House in Boscombe, which was utterly tragic. The microphones didn't work for the family girls, Sly came on stage for a few songs only in a neck brace, and they didn't get on stage till long after the gig was due to end. They didn't seem to realise the audience couldnt hear them singing and just kept right on going...
Finally, Hudson-Ford pop in 5 years earlier than Part Of The Union and Picking Up The Pieces (among others). At 73, a song I didnt know existed before today.

21st January 2018
It's back into the top 10 for the 3rd time and all the way to the top for Craig David and Bastille, one of those tracks that doesn't pall with repeat hearings. It's the 3rd chart-topper for Craig (Walking Away and Hot Stuff, the former based on U2's One, the latter Bowie's Let's Dance) and Bastille's first. Hot on their heels though, Kylie's back with a contemporary-sounding dance-country crossover and she's Dancing to enter at 3, giving her a sweet 30 years of top 10 hits since I Should Be So Lucky hit 6.
Portugal. The Man are also back into the top 7 months on with Feel It Still, and also with new track Live In The Moment, sandwiching P!nk at 8 - her second top 10 off the new album and a sweet 18 years since There You Go hit 9. New at 13 it's The Straw Hats - well, actually it's Troyboi, but the Norwegian dance troupe have done a fab video for the short-but-sweet dance track in a Japanese-stylee. Appropriating culture or taking it to a wider audience? Actually most modern pop music is appropriated culture, and that includes Japanese acts, so whatever it looks terrific.
As a load of oldies depart the chart, some also pop in, topped by the late Dolores O'Riordan's Cranberries, and their best record, Linger. Dolores died suddenly, and far too young, last week. The Revivalists is a couple or 3 years old, but one I missed, and Fall Out Boy are new in at 35 with the new album track, and are besides themselves. Amongst the deluge of new tracks, The Chainsmokers return, as does Noel Gallagher, that'll be 24 years-worth of entries then.
Paloma Faith sneaks in with a dance track, for a hat-trick, Embrace enter 21 years since All You Good Good People hit 10 (and 14 years since they topped my chart with Gravity), Imagine Dragons keep the new entries coming 6 years since topping with Radioactive (well, nearer 5, but hey, it was 2012), as The Manics make it at least 25 years of newies, Bruno makes it 8 years (including 2 chart-toppers in Grenade and Marry You), Simple Minds return with only the one chart-topper in 1995 (She's A River) but 36 years of hits. Finally, Mavis Staples pops in solo, after assisting Gorillaz last year, having been helped by Prince in 1991 with Melody Cool and on his tours wot-I-saw, and 46 years since I'll Take You There hit my number 3 for The Staple Singers, Mavis' sisters and dad.

14th January 1986
It's back on top after a break of over a month, to give Pet Shop Boys one week on top in both 1985 and 1986 - it's unusual for records to do that in my chart, but hey it's a classic! Even holding off a brand new classic at 2 from a-ha. Go West get a second top 10 and Eurythmics an umpteenth, rare that they didn't hit my top 10. Broken Wings gets a big climb into the 20, and highest "new" entry is Radio Africa starting the theme of flops becoming hits second time round in 1986, and for this week the trend of loads of re-entries which get called "new" because it's a new year and I like to see chart runs in different years with as not part of the initial run.
King have yet another top 40 track - who recalled they had so many! Steve Harley and Sarah Brightman both get a first top 40 hit in years, thanks to Andrew Lloyd Webber (never hurts to have your hubbie write the songs), and Full Force rocket into the 30 with Alice, hip-hopping away, in mood if not literally. Fine Young Cannibals cover Elvis - Pet Shop Boys please take note! Sade overtakes Slade, new at 45 - that only works if you pronounce Slade as Slahday - and a famous Billy Ocean chart-topper debuts quite low-down: Romancing The Stone was the film, and indeed, at a 2017 Uptown Country Park 80's festival, Billy in fine voice, I decided to get going as it was getting tough anticipating the rush for the exit as his encore arrived.
Stevie Nicks fabulous I Can't Wait is new in at 58, as good as a Mac track, 5 Star's best single is at 61, give or take Rain Or Shine, Alexander O'Neal is in with Cherrelle - he will be back quite a lot, she won't. Talking of films, Eddie Murphy has a decent stab at a pop career, the recently sad loss of Phil Lynnot brings 19 into the chart, and Timmy Thomas is back for his only other chart entry that wasn't his awesome 1973 classic Why Can't We Live Together - as covered by Sade, in fact, on her album but never a single. A Remix would top my chart for Timmy in 1990.

13th January 1967
Yet another classic one-weeker drops replaced by yet another 60's classic, Nancy Sinatra's 4th chart-topper, and Lee Hazelwood's first as an artist (though he 100% would have topped with These Boots Are Made For Walkin' for Nancy had I charted in 1966 either at the time or retrospectively). This is the gem in the Lee Hazelwood songbook though, just perfect. The Bee Gees get the highest new entry with the much-covered but never-bettered Words at 7, knocking themsleves out of the top 10, as do the Beatles as Your Mother Should Know hits 10.
Glen Campbell is new at 16 with the next single off the Grammy-winning By The Time I Get To Phoenix album, the fab Hey Little One, and is joined by 2 tracks off it, the also fab You're Young And You'll Forget at 39, and Tomorrow Never Comes at 50. Glen had 3 unstoppable years ahead of him, singles and albums both. The Trems grab another jolly tuneful pop fave, and Amen Corner debut in my chart with their much-loved (at the time) version of Bend Me Shape Me. Think I prefer the original, though, up to 20. I'm not sure....!

It's Oh Wonder on top in an otherwise quiet chart week, their second chart entry, and a fab record, it borrows somewhat from Elton John's fantastic Benny & The Jets, which topped my charts 44 years ago - at least the backbone of the record anyway. Midge Ure is also back in the top 10 with the same track 23 years on, a good version of Breathe. Sister Sledge make it a 5th top 10, 33 years on since the last one (albeit a 38-year-old record). Naughty Boy adds to his list of top 10's (his 5th, including a number one - La La La), P!nk gets a 3rd top 20 in a row off the album, and Portugal. The Man get 2 top 20 entries - Feel It Still is back over 6 months later, and new track Live In The Moment is just below it.
Big climb for Jessie Ware, Bleachers finally got top 40, and Blondie are back again a very sweet 40 years from their debut with Denis (almost) and with Joan Jett in tow some 36 years since I Love Rock N Roll. She hasn't troubled my charts since ILRNR was reissued in 1994, and not with new material since the 80's! Lily Allen returns, not before time, 12 years since her debut and still yet to top my chart. Lana Del Ray and Anna Of The North return, and Wolf Alice get a debut at last.

6th January 1967
A new year, yet another new number one, and it's The Moody Blues classic Nights In White Satin topping my chart, with more to follow in the 70's. Nancy & Lee get a 4th top 5 in 12 months as a duo, Nancy makes it 6. The Love Affair get a first top 10, Darlene Love is in the 30 (without Phil Spector, presumably), as Lalo Schifrin and Frankie Valli's mini-epic ballad go top 40. The Small Faces and Cat Stevens both return to the top 40 for a 3rd or 4th time.
Etta James classic, soon to be a Chicken Shack UK hit, brings I'd rather Go Blind into my charts, as The Hump chalks up another smooth ballad, chasing Mireille Mathieu's version of a previous one, Marvin Gaye jumps in with a track new to me, as do The Dells with another Northern Soul-sounding goodie, while a major fave song as I turned 14 was The Raiders version of Joe South's Birds Of A Feather. Joe's original is a little rootsier, and in at 62, but even Johnny Nash's reggae version couldnt make the fab song a UK hit. The Temps and The Cowsills round off the newies.

It's new in at 1 with another oldie - the 20 year anniversary reissue recharting Beatles double A side classic, keeping up the run of charting oldies, mostly. That means the actual top new track, West End Girls, has still only had 1 week on top in what otherwise would have been a 6 week-run on top if not for oldies.
A-ha rocket into the top 10 for 2 in a row, The Cars do it for the 3rd time, and Go West shoot into the 20 for the 3rd time. Highest new track is Pat Benatar, while Steve Harley, 12 years on from Judy Teen, teams up with ex-1978 chart-topper Sarah Brightman, now a serious musical star, for the Phantom duet. Fine Young Cannibals cover Elvis, Dire Straits dig deeper into Brothers In Arms, ABC enter a bit blue, and Grace Jones is besides herself at being a new entry with an old Edith Piaf French classic ballad. Literally. As is kate Bush, literally beside herself.

It's a second week for the lush Aretha Franklin ballad 44 years on, just holding off a massive 70-place leap for Oh Wonder, now getting well-deserved Radio 2 support. Radio 2 seems to have gone full on-board with the sort of new tracks that Radio 1 would have played a few years ago, which is good news. It's a mass xmas song drop-out week, as 3 songs with Home in the title are in my top 10, ironically, as I'm still trapped at home caring for my mum with dad back in hospital, and me unable to get to work.
Midge Ure's 1995 UK flop (but big with me) Breathe is back, in the orchestral vogue, which suits it better than some of the bigger hits on the album, while Naughty Boy is back with a Jonas brother in tow at 23, leaping over another Jonas brother at 24. Both doing better than any actual Jonas Brothers records ever did in my charts. Portugal. The Man's 2017 oldie is back in the 40, as their new one enters at 48.
P!nk has a 3rd top 40 off the latest album, Lindsey & Christine get a 3rd of 5 album tracks to hit the 40, Pet Shop Boys version of their Girls Aloud/Xenomania hit belatedly pops in, Shed Seven return for over 20 years of entries, and Jessie ware has a welcome return.

30th December 1967
The final chart of 1967 sees The Beatles replace themselves on top, as the lovely Fool On The Hill becomes the 5th of the year for the Fabs. Nancy & Lee get yet another top 10, with the highest new entry for the gorgeously weird Some Velvet Evening. About a decade ago, days after Lee Hazelwood had died, I was on an exotic beach on a small cove in Crete and this came blasting out of the speakers on a small luxury yacht anchored nearby. Lee would have approved, I'm sure, with his talent for imagery. Also in at 11, the definitive version of Everlasting Love from The Love Affair, on the way up to beat Robert Knight's peak.
In at 24, the lush soul country sounds of classic Ray Charles with a 40's standard done perfectly by ray in 1960, and now a hit again in the States. The song has been covered by umpteen legends, but none better than this version (that I'm aware). Lalo Schifrin is a US TV theme legend, and would eventually hit the British charts with a version of the Jaws movie theme, while his own Mission Impossible theme would be a 90's hit in 90's dance style. I'll stick with the cool original. Solomon King is another track on the 16 Big Hits Aussie LP dad bought in 1969 in Singapore: She Wears My Ring was easily my least-fave track on the album by some distance, but I have enough residual nostalgia for the big ballad to chart it anyway.
The Symbols do a second cover of the year, Neil Diamond also needlessly joins the covers brigade - the old Gary US Bonds hit, which would hit big in the UK for obscure pop act Harley Quinn. Not the DC character, though, but a fab version smack in the midst of glam rock. Neil's isn't quite that good, but it's OK. Al Wilson would grab some 70's success with Show & Tell and The Snake, but his soulful voice features on a future Four Tops hit cover Do What You Gotta Do. Not Levi Stubbs, maybe but then who is? It's a good version. Jackie Wilson pops in with Higher & Higher part 2, essentially, as Cream & Hendrix sneak in with some Prog Rock classics. Like both the tracks, but never loved 'em to bits as some more Rock-oriented fans and critics do.

31st December 1985
A second week on top for Mud, and a fourth week at 2 for Pet Shop Boys in total - if not for oldies it would have had 5 weeks on top. Had my chart rules been different though, it's likely Gene Pitney's I'm Gonna Be Strong would have topped for some of that as I was seriously mad on it. Wizzard would also have recharted and the Win single on my playlist I thought should be treated as an oldie, but it would chart in 1986.
A-ha are the highest new entry at 22 with a classic epic track that's even better than Take On Me, followed closely by a forgotten Eurythmics gem, It's Alright. Jon Anderson pops in, both missing Vangelis and bandmates Yes to get his debut solo entry some 8 years since Wondrous Stories made my top 10 for Yes.

I missed these, so playing catch-up...
24th December 1985
It's a new entry at 1 for a Xmas classic that charted in 1974 but never made my top 10. That was something of a shock for me as Mud had made my top 3 (and had 4 number ones) with all their previous singles, yet this Elvis pastiche ballad sorta disappointed me as a 16-year-old. Roll on 11 years and nostalgia and regular annual radio plays, and hey presto I love it. In fact so many Xmas classics come back my chart looks like the Xmas 2017 singles charts! Not saying I was ahead of the game....OK I am. That also explains why I don't usually rechart them, cos frankly after getting on for 30 to 45 years one gets over-familiar with most of them. Glad to see new generations love them though!
Bizarrely the Shaky Xmas classic is only 20, and it was brand new (well a year-old and held-back to avoid Band Aid and Wham!, rather wisely). Macca's back with his frogs, Bing's 40's standard is back having first charted in 1977, Slade are back again, by this time making it an annual event. Wizzard aren't but they did it the previous year. Nowadays they beat Slade every xmas in the UK charts. This year both were beaten by fellow '73 minor hit Step Into Xmas, as Elton gets a higher spot on the Spotify playlists.
Feargal Sharkey's follow-up single is actually the answer-song to A Good Heart, as the break-up song from the female half of a songwriting romantic duo is followed by the male reply. Benmont Tench (from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) wrote it, Eurythmics Dave Stewart produced it, and Maria McKee is the subject matter, writer of A Good Heart which had a pop at Tench.

31st December 2017
It's Aretha Franklin's orchestral oldie on top, almost exactly 44 years since the gorgeous Stevie Wonder song first charted for me, and it's been a week of oldies xmas invasions, as a refuge from the stress of having a father unexpectedly in hospital from xmas eve (and still there) while caring for a mother who needs help with everything. Lots of TV playlist oldies has created a nostalgic xmas chart invasion, belatedly, some of them having charted dozens of times before, some just a couple or a few times.
The Fizz make it 2 top 10's with the christmassy Home For My Heart, and also give Rick Wakeman his first ever top 10 singles chart credit - though he was tinkling the ivories in my top 10 way back in the early 70's on many records. Paloma gets a second top 10 of the year, Streets Of London incredibly makes my top 20 for the first ever time, criminal for such a great song! Joe Goddrad heavily samples a 70's disco soul flop from Brainstorm, one I didn't know at the time (or since) so I've given them credit, cos it's great.
Buckingham McVie return for 5th track off the Mac-side-project album, Oh Wonder get a second chart single, Taylor Swift gets her first of the year, and Jose Feliciano's xmas oldie finally charts - largely because I keep hearing it, having spent the best part of 45 years never having come across the 1970 track at all. Jose Feliciano had a top 10 fab hit with me in my first charting days in late 1968, with the Doors song, Light My Fire - a stylised version covered by Will Young more recently - and then...nothing. Never made my chart again, not even his current Jools Holland stuff. So, a new chart record - albeit with an oldie - for Jose, as his 49-year-drought comes to an end and he finally gets a follow-up.

It's back on top for Hello Goodbye for a second week as The Beatles hold down 1, 3, 6, 7 and 17 making sure that every track peaks lower than they otherwise would have. It's a quiet week for new entries, one classic in at 9 for The Moody Blues, a song which would first chart for me in late 1972, top 3, and top my chart in 1979. Other newies are soul acts making reappearances in 1967, Joe South, Carla Thomas and King Curtis covering Stevie Wonder.
Elsewhere the O'Jays make my top 40 for the first time, 5 years ahead of 2 chart-toppers, and Al Green makes the top 20 4 years ahead his early 70's classics.

It's Chris Rea on top, at long last, as he cancels his tour from ill health, but continues to have the most heart-warming annual christmas fave with his 1988 classic. The song made my top 10 then, and hit 4 in 1994, before hitting a new peak of 3 in 2007. All of them in years when the UK singles chart was unwelcoming to the song, to say the least. It finally makes the UK top 20 this week, and in celebration it not only makes my top 10 for the 7th time, it finally hits the top spot 29 years on. No record has charted so many times before topping my chart, nor had so many weeks on the chart before topping my chart.
Craig David gets his first top 10 since 2010, and his 5th in total, including 2 number ones (Hot Stuff in 2007 and Walking Away in 2000). The Partridge Family make my top 20 for the first time in 44 years, with an old album track, and the highest new entry is also an old Sister Sledge (Chic-produced) album track from 1980, one I've never heard before until Radio 2 played it for the surviving sisters talking about a new tour. Pretty Baby is much better than any of the singles off the album, and is therefore their best new entry on my chart since Lost In Music in 1979 (ignoring reissues and remixes).
Empire Of The Sun replace themselves in my chart, with a song containing "home" in it, very much the theme of the chart, on top, and new entries from Joe Goddard, a climber for The Fizz, someone ironic considering the charity new entry at 40 - Ralph McTell's new version of his classic Streets Of London is in aid of the homeless, and it's rather a good version, helped along by Annie Lennox. That's Annie's first chart credit here in 8 years, and Ralph's first, cough, in 42 years. That's one hell of an absence! Streets Of London was already a few years old when it charted at Christmas 1974, as was another oldie, Hey There Lonely Girl from Eddie Holman. Eddie hasn't troubled my chart since, until now - purely because an oldie I was listening to on youtube ended and this track started up next, one from 1966 I'd never heard of. An instant retro fave for me and lovely to see Ralph & Eddie entering together 43 years since they last both hit my top 40.

17th December 1985
It's only one week on top for West End Girls, as a recent Christmas Classic enters back on top, Wham! very nearly replacing themselves at 1 but for Pet Shop Boys. Cameo go top 10, She's Strange that one, and Shaky's xmas now-perennial leaps into the 40 for the first time. Lots of climbers due to a lack of new entries, which back in the day was the norm. Or now, in fact, bar the oldies xmas invasions that I used to do in my own charts and now happens in the actual official charts everywhere.
Amii Stewart has a new duetting partner for her old Johnny Bristol hit mash-up of 2 Smokey Robinson songs, My Guy My Girl and Sophie George is too Girlie Girlie, too. A forgotten xmas song from Bryan Adams, I doubt I've heard Christmas Time in 32 years....! On the other hand, Walking In The Air and Aled Jones were regular xmas airplay and TVplay oldies - and here they are - but not quite as you might guess. I never liked Aled's version of Walking In The Air, so it's the original TV "Snowman" soundtrack that enters, while Aled gives Mike Oldfield a festive hand. Mike, of course, has had several xmas hits, none of them actually mentioning xmas at all, preferring a more traditional solstice theme.
